Logos 4.0a Beta Testing Guidelines

Important Information

IMPORTANT: Logos 4.0a Beta 1 is beta software. It may corrupt your computer or delete your data. The Passage Guide, searching, or viewing books may stop working. We recommend installing Logos 4.0a Beta 1 only on a dedicated testing machine.

Logos 4.0a cannot be installed side-by-side with Logos 4.0; it will replace your existing installation. (However, since Logos 4 uses a per-user installation, you can create a new Windows user account on your computer and install Logos 4.0a under that account for testing.)

Logos 4.0a cannot be downgraded to Logos 4.0. You will need to uninstall, delete all
Logos4
folders, then reinstall Logos 4.0 if you no longer wish to run Logos 4.0a.

Do not share resources or Data folders between 4.0 and 4.0a Beta 1; the format of data files and (some) resources in 4.0a Beta 1 has changed, making them unreadable by 4.0.

Some documents in Logos 4.0a Beta 1 have changed their internal formats since the release of 4.0; these documents will not be synced to your 4.0 installation. The new types of documents that will be added to 4.0a (e.g., verse lists) will also not be synced. However, existing document types that haven’t changed their internal formats will continue to sync between 4.0 and 4.0a Beta 1.

Tips

If you don’t have a separate computer for testing, consider creating a new Windows user account for beta testing. Install the beta under that account, keeping the stable version on your regular Windows account. You can still log in with the same logos.com email and password to share your licenses and settings between the two accounts. You should not share Resources folders, as 4.0a may download resources that can only be read by 4.0a, which would corrupt your 4.0 installation.

How to Join the Beta

Run the special beta installer here: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/InstallerBeta/Logos4Setup.exe

For example, many people have children and had no problems installing Logos 3 for them. Everything they did on that machine was their own problem so to speak. We simply installed the Key file or sent it to them and they were off to the races. Not so in Logos 4. Email & Password loss or misuse is much more insecure than loss of a Key file. A Key logger for example needs only to see what you typed as opposed to hacking your machine and looking for a Key file that may not even be on that machine.

So if / when a computer or an easier Email & Password is stolen or misused, one can logon to Logos.com and buy up everything if you left a credit card on file. Also, does everyone have children or family they fully trust to NEVER find a reason to misuse your personal account Email & Password that activates Logos 4? So you may also easily lose years of work / markup settings for any unwanted install or misuse of your account info due to the online Sync Feature. I'm pretty sure I know the underlying reason why they "sold" this thought of installing Logos 4 on all of ones computers with a sync feature. I'll leave that for my in-depth blogs. Anyways, how is that share friendly when one can no longer install Logos 4 for his own child, because your own settings will be manipulated? Am I being manipulated / forced to spend thousands of dollars for my children to secure my own primary machine from being manipulated in what is supposed to be a share friendly / secure Sync Feature? Or maybe my CHILDREN are being forced to spend the thousands. Hmm...

Proposed Fix:

1. Disable Email & Password activation (I've read this is possible now but with hassles).

2. Have option to ALLOW sync feature across designated computers via separate shared User Name / Password(s)

Logos4 'Floating Windows' are 'too' separate from the main window, unlike Logos3

Logos4 'Floating Windows' appear to be 'too' separate from the main window, unlike Logos3. For the purpose of best utilizing my limited screen real estate, I prefer to have various overlapping windows within the main application window, but the Floating Windows all seem separate, almost like different applications.
I have MS Office 2007, and although the ribbon took some time to get used to, it has lots of features, and is useful.

The ribbon in Logos 4 is there because??? The passage search is obviously key to they whole software, but it is the same size as the command bar, so it could be there. As far as I can tell, there is no reason for the ribbon, at least so far. I guess the bible study in a year part is OK, but all of the other stuff is a waste of space. And it is not really customizable.

I hope there are plans for it, it has some potential, if it becomes customizable, and if there are many more options as to what goes there.

Missed it!
We can search our own notes! Wow!

I was an L4 Beta Tester, and I missed it somehow.

My early impression of the Logos A4 build is that the UI is not as clean or as easy on the eyes as the PC build -which is stunning!

Are there plans to add some additional visual polish to the core UI objects/controls to better match the PC twin? For example the PC versions color palate is softer than the stark flat grey of the mac version. Also, little things like odd drop shadows on every container element (tabs, panels etc...) seem out of place and are not present on the PC version.

Other core differences may be platform specific. For example all options and tools on the mac version are located in the top system application bar. This follows Apple's Human User Interface guidelines so is not technically a bad choice in any way and is arguably correct but it's not as handy as the PC versions UI implementation where the core features are all easily accessible via the main application window itself . Maybe this will be duplicative functionality in the final UI build and the application chrome and UI will be updated to match the PC version?...

My last thought pertains to the gaudy standard mac scrollbar controls. Ug, I've never liked these from a UI perspective. I know modifying them is not as clean a process as working within Microsoft's WPF framework, that said many mac applications are modified to reduce the eye strain of apples default scroll controls. Apple even does this on their own pro apps! My question then is will we see the superior UI design of the PC versions custom scroll controls or a similar variant for the mac? I really like how the scroll bars on the PC version fade out a bit and that they don't dominate the page when not in use. This is very helpful when reading a lot of text. It cleans up the multi panel layouts considerably and reduces eye strain.

Those are just my random nerdy thoughts. On the positive side, I appreciate the strong efforts of the Logos team to make a solid mac product, and I'll be excited to finally have feature parity with the windows version when the mac client is done. Great business move in my opinion even if it caused the Logos team to start from scratch. Your Internal development efforts for the mac platform are a much welcomed change of strategy!

Thanks and God bless

Slow Logos 4

Like many others, I have been annoyed with the speed (or lack
thereof) at which Logos 4 has run on my computer over the last week.
I'm ok with trying to re-learn how to use the program, but I'm not ok
with just how much slower the program runs. Yes, it is much faster when
doing an entire library search, but in Logos 3, I just didn't do a ton
of entire library searches--and my searches in collections (or Topic
Browser or Reference Browser) weren't that much slower than v4. Anyway,
I am really not meaning to be negative, but am looking for some
guidance. It appears that for some people, Logos 4 runs fine, and
wondered if there is something I can do to speed it up?

My system is an Acer Extensa 5430 laptop, with an AMD Athlon X2 dual
core processor running at 1.9 GHz (both cores together). Windows says I have 2
GB of RAM, though DirectX Diagnostics reports it at 1790 MB (I'm
assuming that means some of the RAM is being used as video memory). The
video card is an integrated Radeon HD3200. I'm running Vista Business
with all updates installed. The hard drive is 102 GB with 35.8 GB free
(5400 RPM, single partition, defragmented after install and indexing
and a couple times since just to make sure). AVG Free is also running,
though I have added the Logos4 folder to the exclusions list. All
resources have been downloaded, indexing is complete, and I have installed the SR's as they come out. Looking at the Task Manager with
Logos 4 running, it appears that Logos is the only thing that is really
using any resources--and that is mostly lots of CPU cycles.

None of the other programs I run are as sluggish as Logos 4. If
there is something within my setup that can be changed to fix the
problem, I'd be happy to do it (outside of upgrading the computer). If it's
something inherent to the program and can be fixed soon, I'll try to
wait it out, otherwise I may just try to get a refund and come back to
the program in a couple years when I'm able to get a faster computer.
Again, I don't mean to complain or be negative--I love my Logos
software (and rely heavily upon it)--but at the moment it is not
responsive enough for me to use all the time. Any help you can offer
would be appreciated. Thanks!

Video on a layout for studying and comparing the use of the OT in the NT

Here is a link to my blog that has a youtube video with some ideas and suggestions on OT/NT studies. A solution was given to delete the updates.db file and which would force Logos 4 to rebuild that file and download anything that might be missing.

The thing is, I have done it again, and it keeps doing the same thing. It keeps finding things to download. I have no idea as to what, but just now it downloaded 27mb of something. This time however, it did not go through a re-index.
