Before I start to point out problems, I'd like to say thank you for both Text Comparison and the contextual verse references: these save me time : )

Problem illustration [may depend on your library]:

  1. Tools> Text Comparison
  2. Reference box: John 3:16
  3. Resource box: Top Bibles
  4. In the reference box, type 5 5
  5. Rather than John 5 5, it selects Surah 5 5, i.e. the Quran, which fails because no Bible (to my knowledge) contains Surah 5 5
  6. Return to John 3:16
  7. In the reference box, type 1 1
  8. Rather than John 1 1, it selects Calvin's Institutes I, i, which again, obviously fails.

I'd consider this a bug, but it I've also tested it in L4, and it worked the same way.  Therefore, I consider it quite an old bug : >
I see that Text Comparison's Reference box offers passage suggestions (and presumably people find that helpful); but shouldn't it support at least the functionality of a Bible resource panel's reference box (since this is Bible software)?  If this is by design, then why so?  Thanks : )

If you watch the Selection box, the text comparison is working just fine. It is no longer limited to the Bible - by whatever canonical definition you define it. If I enter John 5:5 I get:

If I enter 5:5 I get the top resource with that location:

Users had specifically requested the ability to use text comparison for texts other than Biblical texts ... and not specifying the book of the Bible has never work IIRC

Wow, sorry about the delayed response: I'd only seen your initial post where you said, "I am unable to replicate the problem," and asked me to post screenshots, but I've had a busy month, and thanks to Dave pinging me, I now see that you edited your initial post, beating me to the screenshots.
Nice : )

MJ. Smith:

That seems like a useful feature, especially presuming Faithlife might be reusing that same code for Noet.  I wasn't claiming that it shouldn't support the Quran, but…

MJ. Smith:
and not specifying the book of the Bible has never work[ed], IIRC

Why not?  Since resource panes already have that super-handy feature of accepting references based on the current context, Faithlife must already have the code to do that.
You have confirmed that the problem isn't limited to me (thank you : ), so now it seems like the rest of my question is for Faithlife, as I'd also asked:

Oh, yeah and then there is also the more specific Faithlife-design question of:

Why is the Quran even offered when I have "Top Bibles" selected?

I'm not certain but I expect Fatihlife didn't want to force the user into a particular order when changing to a new comparison. You can change the reference before you change the resources compared i.e. work from left to right.

It seems reasonable that TC should  act the same as a Bible's reference box and assume the same book i.e. Jn 5:5

Faithlife?

Like similar entry boxes, one can change only the numbers.

Are there similar cases where the book is remembered and assumed? In the PG entering numbers generates equally bizarre results change from Exodus to 1 Kings

There is an older case suggesting this, and it was determined to be something we didn't want to do (I don't know the reasoning). It's been awhile, so I'll bring it back up and see if that decision has changed.

Hmm. Noting it has been a month: any news?
[Thanks :]

I'm actually returning here, however, thanks to James Taylor listing the "F7 popup" as one of his favorite "show off" features.

  • In ignorance, I've been keeping a Text Comparison tab next to my main Bible tab, and each time I'd wonder what other translations said, I'd switch to Text Comparison [and as explained in this thread, then have to enter the complete reference].
  • Now I'll simply click on the verse right where I'm reading (or select multiple verses), and hit F7

Wow! F7 is now on my favorite features list, too : )
