As has been my habit since I started with L4 and I continue to get prepubs and other resources, I will merge indexes over night after I recieve one or more new resources.  I have a couple points:

1.  Is there a way to do this as a command, or menu selection?  the only way I can do it right now is to search for something, then select the link to merge indexes in the new resources section.

2.  I am currently unable to merge indexes.  as i start the process (above), normally, the first thing I do is do an "Update now", to verify that everything is up to date at that pont and I have no more to add at that point.  then click the link (as mentioend above).  the indexing begins, as the L4 icon is inteh task bar and when I check right away (hover over the icon) it says something about calculating time.

Later when I return to check the status of the indexing. maybe a few minutes later, the icon is gone.  but if I do a search again (#1 process) again, it still shows that there are new resourcess that the indexes are apparently needing to be merged.

I tried leaving L4 running while the Indesx is running.  I tried exiting L4, and it does the same thing (or doesn't do it, as the case may be). and in both cases, I do not otherwise use the computer for anything else, as I usually am getting ready to let it run over night.

I have Win7 64bit. and a Lenovo X61T (tablet).  I have now tried to merge indexes over the course of several days and a dozen or so times.  it is not merging.  I don't see any errors, or messages.  it just seems to stop.

Hi Brent

You can rebuild or merge the index from the Command Box in the toolbar at the top of the program window (for info on this see "Command" in L4 help)

Available commands are "rebuild index" and "merge index".

This may be an answer to your first point - not sure whether this will make your second point go away!

Hope this is helpful

Graham

Hi Brent,

From the command line type Merge Index. The command should show up as an item to select in a pop up, select it and you should commence a merge index. Type rebuild index and that will rebuild your index similar to the first time you installed L4.  It will take a while, so you may want to do this before you go to bed.

As to your merge index problem, I suspect the advise would be to do a complete rebuild, but you may get more specific advise from a Logos Tech. I would wait and see, but my guess would be to perform a rebuild.

As far as a way to make it even easier, in the Command Bar when you type "merge index", you will see that command come up in a drop down box below the command bar. Click on it, and drag it up to the tool bar, then release the mouse button.  It will deposit a button there, and from then on you can just click the button to do either a Merge Index, Rebuild Index, or both (two separate buttons)!

thanks everyone.  so far so good.  becaus I do get new resources a lot, I have also added the command to my tool bar as well.

I ran the merge index and it is running.  it sayd 4 hours to go, so we'll see in a bit, how it goes.

You will need to start by posting your logs:

I'd like to see log files first. But the only solution is to delete all the files in \Logos4\Data\{random}\LibraryIndex\  and start L4.

That error can only be fixed with a rebuild. As the command has failed the only solution is to delete all the files in \Logos4\Data\{random}\LibraryIndex\  and start L4 to force a re-index. If that doesn't work you are looking at a complete re-installation (but downloading can be avoided - see http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers).

Trying.

I hope it works, as this is a rather new setup on my tablet PC.  In fact, I had XP and l3, and upgraded initially.  worked great, but wanted to try the new install from scratch, so I reimaged to Windows7 64 bit and started the new install.  I didn't mind the long download, but was (and still am) dissapointed with thetotal resource differences from my L3 (desktop, and previously on the tablet).  But I am willing to go on again. (each major releas for me from 1 to 2, and from 2 to 3 as well - I had lost resources.)

BUT if i am required to reinstall now, then someone needs to get me a root cause analysis.  this system is pretty clean, and l4 is ht emain app on the tablet.  if ther eis a failure somewhere, it needs to be documented.  I have this tablet PC nearly completely so that I cna have my full l4 library, and if it is going to fail, then someone needs to be able to tell me why.

BTW as expected the full reindexing is so far saying 10 more hours.  so that is a good sign. :)

edit: must be using "Microsoft Minutes" for calculating, it now says 29 hours. :)

it finished.  didn't take 29 hours, but that's okay.  :)

pretty sure it worked. :)

I can't say WHY, and I don't think Logos have positively identified the cause. But your case is documented in the Bugs section of the wiki.

I was about to submit a new post until I ran across this post. I too, noticed a "New resources appear in this section..." message after a search operation. Why does this occur? I was under the impression that the automatic indexing which follows downloads accomplished merging. Am I missing something? Is the "merge index" function different from the indexing function done after downloads? Should I now perform a search to determine if my index is merged? I don't even know if I'm asking the right question now... I'm a little confused. Huh?

A supplemental index causes some confusion for search results as the "New resources" section is required only for results sorted by Rank ie. they cannot be merged with results from the main index. If you search by Book, the results are merged into the Library Results section and the "New resources" section actually contains redundant information, except for the pesky reminder. For more info see http://wiki.logos.com/Installation_and_Indexing_FAQ%27s

That reminder is not necessary now that a command exists to perform a merge. Also, the Indexer will automatically merge a supplemental with the main when the former gets to a certain size.
