I have been thinking about writing this for some time, as I pop between Verbum on Mac and Windows pretty regularly, and the Mac version is SLOW. The slowness is periodic; the "pie plate" will spin, and then things will happen.

I am running on a maxed out Macbook Pro 2014, just about a year old, with ample specs:

2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage

To me it seems like it's when parts of the app are run for the first time or first time in awhile (even though I keep Verbum running pretty much all the time on my laptop). Some examples just this morning as I was timing things:

1. Clicked an existing note that I have a shortcut on the bar at the top - pie spins for 13 seconds then opens

2. In the new Multiple resources, I type "NASB" to filter bibles in the dropdown - pie spins for 15 seconds

3. In the Note from #1, I click to add a note - pie spins for 4 seconds.

4. Bring up Passage Guide, Text Comparison, Factbook, and use them - all instantaneous

5. Click on ESV shortcut on toolbar - pie spins for 15 seconds (brought up with 3 extra resources). I turned off the first Bible in multiple resources, pie spins 1 second. I turn off the second, pie spins for 34 seconds! Turning off the 3rd Bible takes 14 seconds but no pie plate spinning. I tried turning another multiple resource Bible off by clicking its checklist off, and it was > 30 seconds of pie plate spinning I did not time it.

I think Multiple Resources may need some performance work, but it's not just that part at all, as the other tests show and as I have seen for quite some time with older versions of Verbum. To me it seems like parts of Verbum are getting swapped out of memory or something, and have to be re-established to execute, since it almost always happens when you go up to the Mac and use Verbum after it has been sitting for awhile (even though no other active work is being done with it). If you sitting in Verbum using it, it gets faster meaning the pie plate does not show up.

I use this Mac laptop when I travel as it's much lighter (I have a 2 year old Windows laptop), but the pie plate spinning is very noticeable.

Does anyone else notice this? It's the only OS X app I see this happening with - I run about 8-10 other apps pretty regularly. There is zero hourglass waiting on the Windows side. I can't say the Mac version is  something I would want to work with full time.

I am not sure how to proceed, but given my install of Verbum with plenty of resources, notes, collections, tags, etc., I figure someone else must see this?

Although my MacBook Pro is not as beefy as your box L6 on my mac is slow as well. I get many beachballs (pie plate) usually when highlighting or note taking. I have started keeping my note files smaller to help increase the speed but have only been marginally successful. The slowness of L6 on my box has kept me from using L6 more and it has long ago ceased to be my Bible study program of choice due to its slowness. The stability has gotten much better for me but the speed is definitely off!

Hi Don

Strangely I don't seem to have these problems on my Air.

1, 3, 4 are all pretty instantaneous.

2, of course is still in development and slowness is acknowledged...

How much free space do you have on your drive?

The performance issues with the multiple resource popup on Mac should be greatly improved in the next Beta.

Thanks Martin, I mentioned that feature knowing it's beta. But there is definitely some sort of long-term intermittent-but-persistent performance issue with the Mac version that has been noticeable for awhile. I hope some work researching/investigating this can be done, it's definitely far less usable for serious work compared to the Windows version.

I was having many many issues for slowness BUT I was running the beta of El Capitan. Logos was horrible. I just got the new Macbook and it has much slower specs than my latest Macbook Pro i7 (2.9, 16 g ram). I did not install the beta on Mac OS on the new Macbook and the speed is great. So if your running the Mac beta that could be your problem. Mine was unusable.

This latest Logos beta I am happy Replace with Passage is working again!

No, I am not running any OS X betas, and never have. I am wondering about incompatibilities with other apps. It doesn't seem to be affecting everyone but it does affect some people, I hope Faithlife acknowledges this because they should be able to see it - or if there is a way I can assist.

Unfortunately, there generally is not some "magic bullet" that will solve performance issues as most of them tend to be specific to a users workflow. Some of the performance issues are also user specific, which why we are not always able to see it as you say. In order to track these down, we need specific reproduction steps so we can test/reproduce locally. Once we are able to see/reproduce the issue ourselves, we can look at improving the performance. If you have logging enabled on your Mac, you can use the logging utility to grab a sample while the application is not responding that will tell us what the system thinks it is doing during that time.

Thanks Martin Potter! Let me see if I have done this correctly - I Have attached the log zip file.

Here is what I did:

1. Downloaded and ran the logging utility; ensured Verbum and all Logos related processes were closed in activity monitor.

2. Enabled logging

3. Ran Verbum 6.6 beta - opened to Home Page

4. Went to logging utility and clicked sample

5. Went to Verbum, clicked on a Note shortcut on my toolbar - took about 40 seconds to open with pie spinning!

I hope this is a good zip file, if not let me know and I'll try again.

Thank you. Most of your sample was the Home Page generation. The sample is only taken for five seconds after clicking the "Sample" button, so that needs to be done after you click on the Note shortcut and not before. Forty seconds is a long time for the Note to open, can you please start with a blank layout, click on the Note shortcut, then click sample and upload that so there isn't the Home Page in the data?

OK, here you go. I exited Verbum, started the logging tool, started Verbum (I had set the settings to blank screen), clicked the Note, then went over and clicked sample. The progress bar went for about 8 seconds and then prompted me to save the file. It took another 25 seconds for the Note to come up. Did this work ok? FYI on Windows this Note comes up in less than a second - when I view in full and do print/export, it is 356 pages so it's a big note - maybe the Mac isn't as efficient doing this? (both computers have fast SSDs, the Mac is PCIe).

Yes, that provides much more information about what it is doing.

Wow, that is a large note file. There are some platform differences in text layout and rendering, but we have not seen anything that should contribute to as much of a difference as you are seeing. If I invite you to a Faithlife group, would you be willing to share the document so we can see what we can do about improving the performance?

Thank you for your time,

Martin

OK, it should be there - "Msgr. Charles Pope". Its a blog I like that I save posts for research, homilies and talks, etc.

Again, it's very fast on Windows - hope you can figure it out! Let me know if yu need more help from me.

Thanks again Martin!

I got it, thank you. Just one last question before Monday, which view are you in Full, Compact, Split or Quote?

This should be fixed in 6.6 Beta 3.

WOW GREAT Angela! Thanks! Once it's out I"ll do some testing to see if I see any other unusually slow areas! This is great!

I assume they are still working on the Notes slowness...
