Start Up Failure: Logos Bible Software 4 has encountered a problem and must close

I can not get my software to remain open...as it opens it encounters a failure and shuts down...failure readings are:

EventType: clr20r3 P1: logos4.exe P2: 4.1.3.5180 P3: 4b4ba820 P4: libroniix.searchengine

P5: 4.1.3.5180 P6: 4b4ba6f9 P7: 23c P8: 74 P9: system.invalidoperationexception

rebooting does not help...ideas?

Please provide details of your computer system, how & when you installed L4, and any previous issues.

Try starting with the Ctrl key held down and go to a Blank Layout. This will generate a log that you can upload to the forum - see Uploading Logs

Logos 4 also kept closing on me after I had installed Lexham discourse Greek NT, even after a reboot. Eventually it condescended to work again, without a second reboot. Maybe it needed to wait till the new software was fully integrated into library.

* I guess I don't know what to do after opening with a Blank Page to generate a Report
* I have disc and loaded from them...works fine on my Laptop and I believe it worked well on the desktop a few times

I have the same problem - it starts the home page loads with just the header, the donut in the center is working then it goes away.

Rebooting does not help.

Hi Joe, please don't post log files on the wiki. Nobody will find them there. You created a page with no title and no link from here, so there's no way anybody could find it normally. If you opened to a blank layout can you proceed to access resources and do some work?

By Report, I assume you mean a log? The information is auto generated if you enabled permanent logging, so you only have to upload as per the wiki links I gave you.

Dennis, the log file (if it gets generated) will be called Logos4.log, and it will be located in a folder called Logos Log Files which is a sub-folder of your Documents folder (or My Documents if you're running Windows XP). I have been experiencing the same problem ever since the last update. The problem will stay open if I open it with a blank page. The Library is accessible, and I can run searches.

My system specifications:

* Core i7 920
* 12 GB RAM (OCZ Platinum, 7-7-7, in triple channel)
* GeForce GTX 295 single PCB
* System drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue (500 GB)
* Storage drive A: Western Digital Caviar Blue (1 TB)
* Storage drive B: Western Digital Greenpower (750 GB)

The problem seems only to be with the Home Page. Everything else works, but if I go to the home page the program crashes. Is there anything I can delete which Logos will rebuild on startup, which might help?

If you are saying L4 crashes then it is not appearing in the logs. So can we try/confirm that:-

you wait about 1 minute after the crash before shutting down L4?
you upload the log before you start L4 again?

Some developers and/or support staff monitor the forum and should respond after the weekend, or you can send your logs direct to Technical Support.

Ok, new log file after letting Logos start up the usual way. It crashed at the Home Page and generated this log.

This time there are clear error messages:

I downloaded the update (592Mb) two days ago, and just started Logos4 this morning. I had exactly the same problem as Dennis, with the same error message from the Windows error reporting feature (EventType: clr20r3, etc.)

I can start it now with a blank page and use it, but opening the home page causes a crash.

I have the following system:

Laptop, 1,83 Mhz Centrino

1Gb Ram

80Gb HD

Windows XP Prof, SP3

Logos4 usually takes several minutes to start before getting a blank screen. With the multiple starts I did now, it starts much faster, but for now that just means it crashes faster.

Same here for me...I launch the program, it starts the opening process and then an error message appears and after I select either yes or no on notification of the problem the program shuts down...I have no choice to wait

The "Error OurApp Unhandled exception:
System.InvalidOperationException: Error reading postings. Document id
out of range." is caused by a corrupt index. The way to fix this is to make a new index.

If you can get Logos started type "rebuild index" into the command line and hit enter (no quotes).

If you cannot start Logos, delete the contents of this folder: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<random>\LibraryIndex and then start Logos, it will see that it doesn't have an index and then will begin to build a new one.[Note: the AppData folder is hidden so you will have to enable the viewing of hidden files and folders to navigate to this folder.]

I believe that the bug that has caused all these corrupt indexes of late has been fixed in 4.0b so this should be a thing of the past.

Thanks Kevin. I shut down the Logos Indexer, deleted the index files, started up Logos 4 without [ctrl], and lo and behold it opened the Home Page without any problems. It's rebuilding the index now. Many thanks for a prompt resolution to this issue.

Thanks for the help Kevin. I had same problem after the last update. Rebuilding the index alone didn't work. As you suggested, I had to delete the contents of C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<random>\LibraryIndex and restart Logos to build a new index. Everything works fine now...after more than a day of indexing!

The short answer is soon, but we don't now how. The last beta release was just bug fixes, no new features. Bradley said that most of the development team is working on 4.0c while some are finishing up with bug fixes for 4.0b. So, my best guess would be in a week or two, but there's been no official word.

Thanks for the feedback. I deleted the index and after indexing it seems to work fine again. Before the index was completed, I tried to find a source in "Cited by" and it crashed again. Hopefully this is past now with the new index.

I did find that the Logos indexer easily uses about 50% of CUP capacity, which really slows down my system. But doing the index at night solved that.

Ever since the last download, L4 starts a long indexing session, but always abandons with the message report that "P9: system.argumentoutofrange." The program continues to work, though I haven't done extensive searches with it. I'm on a MacBook with Parallels 5, running XP. (It's running fine on my little Acer 1410.)

Kevin, can I just let this go for now and hope it will be fixed with the next download? Or do I have to get in there and do something messy? I'm an old missionary [:S].

Tom, without a log file I can't comment on if your problem is the same as the author of this thread. It may or may not be. If your index is corrupt you will need to create a new one to solve this issue. It's also possible that a book (or some other) file is corrupt which is preventing your indexer from completing its download. If this is the case then the indexer log will probably give a clue on what files to delete.

If Logos is working for you then you can just pause the indexer before it has a chance to fail or kill the process in XP's task master, it's up to you.

When Logos releases 4.0b it's possible it will fix your problem but not likely. When 4.0b is release there will be extra indexing anyway to create a new "Bible Only" index. If you want to I (and probably others) would be happy to walk you through the troubleshooting process. If so you will need to procure some Logos and indexer logs ( http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging ) and upload them to the forum ( http://wiki.logos.com/Uploading_Logs ).

Don't know if SP2 was a typo but if you check http://www.logos.com/support/techfaq#sysreqs you will see that Logos 4 requires XP SP3
