Can anyone recommend a comparable volume to F.F. Bruce's Apostle of the Heart Set Free ?

I'm looking more for a bio than Paul's theology. I have some of those.

This is dated, but good: https://www.logos.com/product/2595/the-life-and-epistles-of-st-paul

I also enjoy this one, but it delves a lot into theology too: https://www.logos.com/product/10491/paul-missionary-theologian

May not be what you're looking for but John G Butler volume on Paul is good also the face-2-face series two volume on Paul both are more like biographies:

1. https://www.logos.com/product/17076/paul-the-missionary-apostle

2. https://www.logos.com/product/32212/face2face-series-upgrade

Hope these might help!

I'm looking more for a bio than Paul's theology. I have some of those.

  1. John Pollock's The Apostle: The Life of Paul is a good read. A fair bit simpler than Bruce.
  2. John McRay's Paul: His Life and Teaching is even more scholarly than Bruce. Half the book is on Paul's life (260 pages), the other half is on his theology.
  3. There's a similar book with the same title from Udo Schnelle. I've not read it, but it looks even more dense than McRay, and will be coming from a less evangelical perspective.
  4. Robert Reymond's Paul, Missionary Theologian also has a similar structure, but there's more theology in the 'life' section than in McRay.

I'd recommend one of the first two, depending on how whether you want popular or academic.

Hey Mark, McRay's book looks good. I may get that. I have Pollock and Reymond already plus of course Bruce.

Just bought McRay's book YesSmile

I'd like to see John McRay's Archeology and the New Testament as a Logos resource

Thanks.

Paul and the Faithfulness of God by NTWright

Might fit the bill although a bit pricey. Below is the chart from the begging of the preface to give you a feel for what is covered and how.

Looks like a great book, BUT Way to pricey for the milkman. Good suggestion though.

I do have it... it was a freebie at one time. I haven't read it, but it is on a "maybe" list. Smile

Sorry milkman, I didn't see this thread, but i see that someone has already given you a response in another thread. The Butler volume is great and  as mentioned, expository in nature, so you cant go wrong; especially if you want to preach an "expository biography" series on Paul as opposed to a topical one. I cannot comment on the face2face volumes on Paul because i just got them recently so I have yet to use them. For the price both are great, but I'd go with Butler if I didn't own it.
