Is there a way to use the concordance tool with a passage list?

No - it works on complete resources.

But I can see where it could be useful.

Claude, we do plan to add Passage Lists to the Concordance tool's reference range picker (just like in Search) as soon as we can get to it.

In the meantime, you can use the following (clunky) workaround to turn a passage list into a saved reference range in the Concordance picker:

  1. Create your Passage List.
  2. Print/Export it.
  3. Choose "Print as minimized list" on the left, and then "Copy to clipboard" under "Export" on the right.
  4. Open a text editor (such as Notepad) and copy just the list of references.
  5. Go to Concordance, and click on the reference range picker in the toolbar.
  6. Paste the reference list into the "New Reference Range" box at the bottom of the picker popup.
  7. Type in a name, and hit "Save."

Now you have a saved reference range that you can choose again next time from the picker without going through all these steps.

I did this recently to get a different concordance for each of the speeches in Job (for a Bible Study Magazine article I wrote) to see if I could pick out any differences in the sorts of things each of Job's friends talked about. It worked great. This video shows me making a concordance just of verses where Zophar is talking. (No sound. The print/export panel and Notepad opened off-screen and I had to drag them into the recording window, too. Nevertheless, hopefully you can get the gist of it.)

Hope that helps!

I am glad to see you using Logos for one purpose I consider important but felt like a lone voice in the wilderness on.

Really? Just so you know I follow your posts all over the forums, even though I don't often say anything. I presume the opposite, that there are many who have not "bended the knee" - so to speak and are diligently using the technology to encourage and support others in the body of Christ

FWIW, according to our usage stats, Concordance is a popular panel among Logos Now users, who are the only people it has shipped to at present. Last I looked closely at it, scaling the usage percentage up proportionally to all users would put it in the top 20 panels in the app. Not that it really will scale up proportionally, because Logos Now users are early adopters by definition; nevertheless, when more people have it in their regular toolkit, I'm confident that it will see quite a bit of regular usage.

What I was actually referring to was his wanting to use the summer Sunday School Scriptures as his list going into the concordance. I am surprised at how few people seem to be interested in tracking the scripture actually used in their church - in services, in Sunday School, in suggested readings, in total. I would have expected pastors to be very concerned that their congregation was presented a balanced selection and to use things like the Concordance to verify balance.

I am thrilled that the Concordance is well received ... the more use, the better the chance to get n-grams added.

MJ that is how I took your comment.

Hi Eli,

Great workaround. Is there a workaround on the "Print/Export" feature of the Concordance Tool to export the Scripture References rather than just the total references found?

For example, when I export my results:

Reference Count
Bible 145
Greek GK Number 1

What I like to see are the 145 verse references in Excel. I do not need the passage text, just the references.

For my PhD I am comparing multiple sermons over a period of years of Jonathan Edwards and collating what Scriptures he cited in those sermons.

Thanks!

There is much truth in what you say - and you point to what I think is an important issue  - ensuring a balanced set of Scriptures for a congregation as far as possible.  However, I guess that depends on the preaching practice used in a church.  For example, in the churches I've attended over the years the approach has been to mostly preach on specific themes rather than to progressively go through the Bible or even a particular book or letter. The preaching itself is fairly balanced, but Scripture citations tend to largely be designed to support the perspective taken towards the theme. In other words, its overall balanced but not in relation to the citation of Scripture. The related Sunday schools also had their own program which had a complete disconnect from what the adult congregation received. The type of church I'm referring to is evangelical and I understand that many evangelical churches do things differently.

It may be that a church having more defined liturgical practices (such as using a lectionary) may be better served in ensuring a more balanced presentation of Scriptures.  Keep well Paul

Eli,

I think I've read else where that you plan to add collections to Concordance search ranges, but I want to go the record saying how important that would be for me. It would be very useful while studying a range of Scripture to be able to see at a glance every reference by St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Augustine to each verse in a particular chapter. Yes, I know this can be done in search, but it's not possible to sort those results by scripture verse (as far as I know).

This would essentially allow us to create "virtual" commentaries by the Fathers of books of the Bible that they didn't make an explicitly commentary on. Creating the indexes within Concordance of each book, with no way to merge the results, makes it rather difficult to achieve this goal.

Best,

James

The Concordance tool seems to work with Vyrso titles and personal books as well as those in Logos format. Nice!

We do hope to do that someday, technical limitations permitting.
