Whenever a citation is opened and a reference selected, there is always an option to "Jump to reference" in the pop-up.  However, most of the time, I want to be able to compare the verse I just jumped to with the verse I was just looking at.  Therefore, it would be most convenient to have the destination reference open in the second pane.

I too would like this or at least an option to go back - a simple back arrow at the top left corner?

If you press and hold the "jump to reference" link you should get options to open the reference in a new pane, a split pane that is already open or a new tab

On my Android phone, the phone's back arrow does this.
