Why the Typing Lag?

Why is there such a lag time while I am typing in a note?  The output on the screen stays about 10 keystrokes behind.  I mean it's just a note.  It's not linked to any other panels(that i'm aware of).  I understand the lag while scrolling through a bible or commentary.  But what's with the note?

Thanks

That is something that I would be interested in. Some days I havea typing lag in my notes and some days I do not, and I cannot figure out what is different from day to day since I almost always have the same programs open.

I haven't been able to figure this one out as it varies so widely from person to person.

Logos aggressively syncs user data so if you have a slower internet connection it  could be slowing things down. Some people have reported that turning Internet Off has improved performance, for others it has had no discernible impact.

Logos also paints the screen in a much more graphically intense way than most programs. It could be that the delay is just your computer's graphics card struggling to keep up. You might try updating your video drivers. It's hard to say. You could also try the ideas here: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Running_Slowly to see if you can speed things up.

I too get typing lag.  It's definitely an optimization problem that Logos needs to fix.  Although Logos 4 Mac is in 'alpha,' it is snappier both on input and in general scrolling (i.e. scrolling through a resource shouldn't lag either, but it does currently in the PC version).

Unfortunately, this is a bit out of our control. We're using WPF's built-in RichTextBox for notes (because, for various technical reasons, you can't mix non-WPF components like third-party edit boxes, with WPF), and it's just really slow.

We're hoping .NET 4.0 -- which we'll switch to in the coming months -- will improve things, and we'll be looking at other possible solutions.

Bob, althouh I hear what you are saying, theres a significant difference in delay between B11 of 4.0b and B12, at least for me, now, I dont see how that can just be the WPF.

I know I cant see the code, but perhaps more optimisation can be done to the coding, have you considered adding the new  note in a seperate RichTextbox, then merge it ino the main note at the end, by a seperate save method, i think the lag/delay is maybe largely due to it saving to the database every few seconds as you type,.

I hope .net 4 fixes it, but dont think its wholy WPF issue.

Bob: .NET 4.0 final version was released April 12, 2010. Of course it will take some time to revise the Logos code to work with this.

QUESTION: Can you please notify us -- not just on the forum, but especially in the Logos Blog -- when the upgrade is completed? Then we will be able to check to see whether things have improved.

I have found... the LONGER the note/clipping file the SLOWER the response in typing (actually slower in just about every way... IE the longer the file the slower L4 responds in general... even multiple crashes when I've got my largest files open)

I have had to make multiple notes/clippings for the same subject in order to get response time back to something manageable.

(Ex. Sermon Points, 00 Sermon Points, 01 Sermon Points, 02 Sermon Points, etc.)

Still no response from Logos on this, and the program is still as slow as ever when writing Notes. Sigh...

I think it is now reasonable to conclude that Logos has no intention of making any improvements to this part of the software.

I wouldn't go that far but I would say that they've got a lot on their plate and this has it's place in their "to do" list.....that's all.

It's a touchy business trying to read minds.... [:O]

Logos has responded, just not here.

They are currently ham-stringed by .Net. Upgrading Logos to .NET 4 has been delayed by some bugs in it. I think notes will improve, but it will take some time.

They really should work on this even if it means dropping something else ... faster Notes would make the software so much more useful.

Lol...until they drop something that someone else desperately wants so they can devote more time to this and then they've angered someone else....they can't win... [:P]

Since the 4.5 update came in this week, I've noticed an improvement in typing speed. It's not up to the standard it should be, but at least it's an improvement.

I open my word processor and type my notes in that. I resize the window so it fits right on top of the note file. Then when I'm finished with the note, it's a simple cut and paste. Problem solved for now.

    Welcome [:D]

Another advantage for using a word processor, then copy and paste, is spell checking.

An alternative to a word processor is Notepad and WordPad, which Microsoft includes with Windows, but they lack spell checking.
