For you Reformed folks, what, in your opinion, is/are the best three to five Expository commentaries from a Reformed perspective on the Old Testament, and available in Logos?

I'm not interested in scholarly, critical, or technical commentaries, and not really interested in historical commentaries for this particular project.

TIA.

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

Hi Doc B,

Unfortunately you'll pay a premium price for the best reformed commentaries in Logos - the Reformed Expository Commentary series. But some of the authors have written in other series and in stand-alones so if you search for Sinclair Ferguson,  Phil  Ryken, Derek Thomas etc you ought to find some great books and the price won't be as high.

Other reformed OT commentators include Dale Ralph Davis, John L. Mackay, John Currid (though perhaps he's on the more technical end) and others you could name yourself I'm sure.  If you have a particular book of the bible in mind I'm sure you'll get some more specific recommendations.

Given your criteria, I would suggest the following three series:

  • Focus on the Bible
  • Reformed Expository Commentary
  • Preaching the Word

In terms of the best within each series, I would say:

  • Any of Dale Ralph Davis' commentaries from Focus on the Bible
  • Iain Duguid's commentary on Numbers in "Preaching the Word"

I'm not sufficiently familiar with the OT volumes of REC to pick one stand-out.

The BST commentary on Nehemiah is also pretty expository — even more so than most volumes in that series. You might also want to consider Stuart Olyott's Dare to Stand Alone in the Welwyn series on Daniel.

Excellent, helpful suggestions, all.

Keep 'em coming. I'm making a list.
