May the Grace and Peace of Jesus be with you all on Logos Forums!

I heartily reccommend that Logos try to publish Quasten's famous Patrology.  This reference text is a comprehensive review of the Early Church Fathers that is so highly regarded and so sought after in print (see print reviews below) that it deserves to be listed as a Logos Pre-pub or Community Pricing Program title. Logos electronic format, with links to more complete works of the Early Church Fathers cited and reviewed, would also greatly enhance its already exceptional usefulness.

About this title: This monumental series places at the disposal of the English reading public a solid introduction to early Christian literature. It is the first work of its kind written originally in English. The first volume appeared in 1950. Reviewers were unanimous in heaping praise upon the publication and looking upon it as a breakthrough in studying the Fathers of the Church. To arouse interest in the works of the Fathers, the author provides numerous excerpts in English. These are thought of as samples that, by giving readers a taste of the beauty and sublimity of the Patristic writings, may tempt them to take in hand the original and get their own impression of it, or, if that is too much for them, at least to read it in good translation. Only this, if achieved, will put readers close to Patristic literature, because only then do they sense the atmosphere of Christian antiquity and begin to penetrate its world. The author's experiences as a university professor prompted him to adopt this device. The selections are designed to also show the development of theology in the early centuries and to illustrate the approach of the Fathers to the deposit of faith.

Review by W.R.Pearse

Quasten reviews the life and works of every Christian writer from the apostolic fathers to the end of the Patristic period. An extensive bibliography is given, containing editions of the work, translations and studies. Attention is also paid to manuscript traditions for the works. The detail is fullest for the earlier writers - later ones are still treated in a lot of detail, but volume constrains the data somewhat.

Vol I - From the Apostolic Creed to Irenaeus.

Vol II - The Ante-Nicene Literature after Irenaeus.

Vol III - The Golden age of Greek Patristic Literature.

Vol IV - The Golden Age of Latin Patristic Literature.

...The work is a triumph of detail and essential as a starting point and reference for anyone interested in the Fathers. It is easily the quickest way to discover what works were written by which father, and where to get an edition/translation of it. Even for specialists, it will be useful as a first point of investigation. A book to return to again and again. Recommended...

Review by Patrick More

...Something of such enduring value as Quasten's Patrology deserves to be published in hardcover. It should be on the short list of must-haves for the library of any seminary or university that teaches church history, patristics, theology, or philosophy.

Yes, this would be a superb resource.  Please, please, please consider making it available to the Patristics nuts here.

Thanks, Peter, for the excellent suggestion.

Great suggestion!

I have the paper version and have found it very helpful.

It would be a great addition to Logos.

I Agree with you Peter, I got a hold of the first volume last year while I was in Spain, and the work is superb. I hope Logos can finally put this resource on Pre-Pub!

Very much so. A resource which would be integral to a study, and a deeper appreciation of the early Church Fathers, and beyond. A deep hope that Logos offers this set.

I was thinking recently of writing in a request for the Patrology, so it is nice to see that someone else recently bumped an old request.
