But what if I still Like Logos 3?
Hey, I like Logos 4, but, I'm finding that I still like Logos 3 as well.
I know, I know, Logos 4 can do a few things L3 can't do. I know there are improvements. But there are also some things that they're still working out. So, in the mean time I use them both. When L4 can't do something I revert to L3 and I can get it done.
I have several different Bible softwares on my PC, - including L3, - but I never really learned to use L3 until I upgraded to L4 and found out that you could have them both running on your PC at the same time! Plus after an investment like that I decided that I had better really learn how to use Logos! (both 3 & 4)
So, I ordered the manuals and started to watch the training videos on the Logos website, then I began to see that it blows all my other Bible software away because it can do way more than the others can. The more I use Logos (L3 & L4) the more I really like it, especially compared to the other competing products I own.
So, my questions are these: (I know L4 is the future, but since I love and use L3 also . . .)
- How long will Logos 3 continue to be supported?
- Will resources continue to be made available in the Libronix format?
- And if so, how long can I expect that to be the case?

Stein, that's a great question that needs t be answered periodically for new forums users, so the word is out and clear.
Many of us on this site, and even the heaviest users, still have Logos 3 on their computer. Everything that has come from Logos on the topic of Logos 3 support has indicated it will be supported for a long time. They are such a customer-friendly company I suspect we will see Logos 3 deprecated at a time when no one cares anymore - quite a ways down the road.
As for me personally, I am in Logos 4 now about 80%, Logos 3 20%. We all have our favorite features we go back to Logos 3 for, that are not quite in ver. 4 yet. I am looking forward to Sermon Files, Vocab Lists/Word Lists, and I pray for some sort of true Topic search. I am REALLY looking forward to getting all my PBB resources into ver 4! Also, there are features ver. 4 needs to get really mature: check the list of things people want at this site, and Logos is updating which ones they are starting on based on our votes: http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-4
You can see here ver. 4 really needs a vast improvement in print capability, Notes, and more.
There is also the question of logistics of resources. There are still CDs to be purchased that either require a phone call to activate (and the responses on phones is somewhat long), or you can install into ver 3, Sync, and get them in ver 4. This will need to be fine tuned, probably through all resources going to download only eventually. I am happy to have ver 3 installed so I don't have to call.
But what we are finding is that there is a lot of low-level work to really tune up the user interface, that can only come from the experience of people using the product. These are a lot of small things; consistency in UI, things like collapsing results within resources, more sort options, better/different display of information when a mouse hovers over something, things like that. These will come, and we pray that Logos applies them consistently so that ver 4 becomes more intuitive to use over time, not less.
Let just about everyone on here, at first ver 4 was somewhat daunting to use because it was so different. I have said that a truly "stable" state will not come for a year, I am targeting 1Q 2011 when we really see all the big stuff is in, product runs well and performance is acceptable to more people, and the UI has been tuned up a lot. That said, I love the product NOW and it is so better than ver 3 to me, for the features it has (which are most of them).
My own little silly prediction is that the first large core of users will start uninstalling ver 3 this fall. By fall of 2012, 80% of ver 3 users will be permanently off it. Again this is just my own guess, but you have plenty of time to enjoy BOTH ver 3 and ver 4.

Five reasons that Logos 3 will stick around a while yet: (others may care to add more....)
- Not all of us yet have computers capable of running Logos 4 properly. Even those of us who do, may have a netbook, which is fine with Logos 3, but would struggle with Logos 4.
- Only those in North America, Europe, Australia and some parts of Asia have relatively inexpensive and high speed access to the internet on which Logos 4 relies for many of its features.
- There are still a few features of Logos 3 that have not been added to Logos 4, not the least of which are the capability to read PBB files (user created files of public domain titles), and the audio and video files contained on some Logos 3 CDs and DVDs
- Many publishers other than Logos used the Libronix (Logos 3) format and still have thousands of book and magazine titles to sell in that CD format (either directly, via the Logos web site or via other booksellers and web sites)
- Those with dual monitor capability may like to have Logos 4 up in the main screen and use Logos 3 on the second monitor to look up side references without interrupting what they are doing on the main screen (which I have not yet figured out how to do as easily using Logos 4 alone, as it tends to add new tabs apparently randomly to existing open sections once the screen layout is already full)

Good point David. I pastor a small church and we are definitely not looking to upgrade my computer there any time soon. I work a part-time job and do not always have my laptop with me when I go to the church office. L3 is great on the older computer; L4 would be a nightmare. And there are features, some of which you mentioned, that I like in L3. I love the topic browser and even in the passage guide the hits I get for illustrations is superior to what I get in L4 (maybe it's just the passage I'm in).
One major thing for me is that I have had issues w/L4 crashing on my laptop (though not happened in a while now); L3 on the church computer has been a life saver for me when I was not able to access L4 on my laptop for one reason or another--did not appreciate those large weekend upgrades.

The fact that a lot of us don't have computers capable of running L4 and that a lot of peolple are still buying used PC's and Laptops is the reason I think that Logos should have considered possibly selling both versions.
Yes I believe Logos 4 is the future, and it will eventually be the one in use nearly all the time. But Libronix 3 is still a great program that could have gone a little cheaper to people with smaller computers.

If that is the speed you get with no cap, maybe we can switch for a week. [:D] Aside from music, video what sites actually utilize that kind of bandwidth? For remote desktop viewing, that could come in handy.
