God Bless everyone and happy new year.

The church where I go to is planning to do a study on the topic of "what is the purpose of the church."

I would appreciate any suggestions on any resource on this topic.

I would also appreciate any resources in the Spanish language.

Thank You

I've previously found this useful for teaching the need to have a balanced outlook of the purposes of the church.

Plus I remember enjoying this (but not available in Logos or Vyrso)

I don't know this book but it's just gone on sale for $0.99 so might be worth a look

I've not read this book, but lots of other stuff by Francis Chan, so I assume he gets it right to the point in here as well.

While the title might not suggest it, I found Timothy Keller's Center Church to be incredibly helpful on this question.  I believe Vyrso has it, but it looks like it's broken up into separate resources for each major section.  In any case, I heartily recommend it.

Don't think it is in Logos, but Cardinal Avery Dulles' Models of the Church would be a good resource.

As you consider the answer(s), you might query ‘the church’ vs your local church. The latter tends to be more difficult.

I'd recommend...

  1. Browsing the Ecclesiology section of the Logos website. You'll likely find more robust works there than many that have already been mentioned.
  2. Also worth checking out is Tim Keller's major work Center Church which is divided into separate resources on the Vyrso website.
  3. Reading the ecclesiology sections of systematic theologies from your church's tradition. (And beyond!)

$9.99 right now at CBD so I’ll take the Vyrso edition 😁 The table of contents looks very practical and interesting

Thanks!

Using Logos topic guide:

And you can use the Passage Guide for verses relevant to the nature of the Church and check the Systematic Theologies, Biblical Theologies and Confessional Documents sections.

A terrific book was published some years ago which helps deal with the more recent "down with  traditional churches and their buildings! We're all about house churches!" movement was "Why We Love the Church" by Kevin DeYoung and Ted Kluck. You might find it an encouraging read when/if you move from learning about the Big-C Church to what local church bodies are supposed to be about.

https://www.logos.com/product/33625/9marks-healthy-church-study-guides this is the best budget wise if you need to buy books for each member of your leadership team. But anything from Dever and the 9Marks line would be helpful.

Here is a one-volume intro - https://www.logos.com/product/51748/what-is-a-healthy-churc

or here are first 3 volumes of what will eventually be a 9 volume set - https://www.logos.com/product/33772/building-healthy-churches-serie
