Thinking about getting Logos 7 but it seems like 7 has been out a bit.  I don't want to purchase 7 if 8 will be out soon and then have to spend more to upgrade.  Any thoughts?  I am sure others have run into this "upgrade" dilemma.

Hi Joe

Joe Colby:
Thinking about getting Logos 7 but it seems like 7 has been out a bit.

Logos 7 was released in August 2016.

Do you have any version of Logos software at the moment?

If not, I'd at least look at getting the free version available at https://www.logos.com/product/136022/basic

And then are there any particular resources / features you are looking for that would help guide any other purchasing decisions?

In many ways the buy / wait question is linked to the "what am I trying to do with it / what do I need it for" question linked with "how urgently do I need it?"

Any thoughts on that?

Graham

It depends upon what you mean by "getting Logos 7." There are three primary considerations. 1) The software engine is free, so you can acquire that now. If you have not done so already, you should. 2) The Library of books you will acquire with L7 will not be the same as the ones you will acquire with L8. If there is a Library that has the books you want, you might want to get them now. It is common for people to be disappointed when waiting for the next release just to discover that the commentary set they were really wanting is no longer offered with base package discounts. 3) The features of L7 is the most interesting part of this. Until last week, FL had a low priced subscription service ("Logos Now") for people who wanted to OWN their books but RENT their features. For a variety of reasons, they have cancelled that program. If you already own a large library, I would suggest NOT purchasing a "feature set" right now, but wait for L8. If you don't own a large Library, you should investigate FL's new service (Faithlife Connect), which is geared towards those without large libraries. There are different levels of service which provide BOTH the features and the resources (books) on a monthly rental fee.

Get L7 now and own it while you can! When L8 comes out it’ll be subscription only ðŸĪŠðŸ˜‚😁

(Probably) said in jest

But I'm aware Joe is new to the forums and may not realise that.

Joe - Logos 8 will be a product available for purchase even if some (a few) features may be subscription only.

Are there signs that Logos 8 is pretty close?

  1. With 21 months between L6 (Nov 2014) and L7 (Aug 2016) could we expect L8 by May?
  2. We're also approaching 7.14 and 6.14 was the last L6 release.
  3. Logos Now was changed just before L7 released (https://community.logos.com/forums/p/128822/837191.aspx ), and it's recently been changed again.

But with 3 years between Logos 4 and Logos 5

And 23 months (i.e. nearly 2 years between Logos 5 and Logos 6

There isn't too much statistical evidence to base planning a purchase wait against.

Faithlife do stay rather shtum regarding major version releases until the are launched.

Go for 7 in whatever base version works for you - and upgrade for free or take advantage of the bases version discount again with 8; getting the variant library it is likely to come with.

Yes, but there have been more than enough hints... plus Bob mentioned moving to a 2 year cycle at some point in the past. L8 will be here sometime this year.

Yes, it was a joke. I, more than anyone, wants Logos 8 and future packages and features to continue to be buy and own and not subscription only. There can be a subscription option for those who want it, but I’d rather own.

With the release of L8 likely to be this year, I would probably wait.  The only reason (I can think of) to get L7 would be if there were specific resources that you had to have in an L7 package.

Usually the resources included in each package are changed with each release, but we don't know what those changes will be.  So you may want to wait or you may want not to.

I would say if there is a big ticket commentary set or other resource set (such as sermons from MacArthur) that you desire to own and is in a base package right now, go ahead and purchase Logos 7.  For the price or just one of these sets by itself, you might get the set and an entire upgrade. Far and away the best bang for your buck.  When Logos 8 comes out, the base packages will very likely be reconfigured and that big ticket resource might not be in the new packages. You have nothing to lose by buying now if you know there are resources you want. You will get credit for resources you own when Logos 8 drops and you will only pay for new resources and features.

Purely a guess but I imagine that L8 won't be released until the new Notes tool comes out of beta testing, and previous notes are successfully migrated across to the new system. I imagine that note taking across all platforms (web, mobile, desktop) would be a big selling point for many new users. Especially those who sign on to Faith Life Connect.

That sounds like a good guess, but I doubt it would delay the release this fall if it weren't ready.

I, for one, would not hold my breath at this point. FL releases in the fall because that is when the academic conferences they like to have their new release in time for occur.

The annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society is November 13-15 this year, to be followed by the Society of Biblical Literature annual meeting on November 17-20, both in Denver, CO. So a good guess is the middle of October to the middle of November for the release of L8, if it occurs this year as has been hinted.

Get the free engine upgrade by 'buying' the free Logos 7 Basic package. This will upgrade you to the latest engine and get you a few free books on temporary license.

Then wait for further upgrades (and discounts) when L8 is released to get new features and/or a new base package.

The other option would have been to subscribe to Logos Now to get access to all the L7 features and datasets, but that product has been removed from sale. Verbum Now (the Catholic version of Logos Now) is still available for $100 a year. You can see it here.

Intriguing possibility (especially considering roll out of Faithlife Connect and Faithlife Ebooks). Currently know of one invitation Beta => Notes and where are they?

Cromwell:
     2.  We're also approaching 7.14 and 6.14 was the last L6 release.

Logos wiki has => https://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Release_History that shows 6.0 was followed by 6.0a and 6.0b before 6.1, which did not happen after 7.0 release.

Uninformed user speculation for upcoming Logos releases (using 6 week development cycle):

  • 7.14 => 2 Apr 2018
  • 7.15 => 14 May 2018
  • 7.16 => 25 Jun 2018
  • 7.17 => 8 Aug 2018
  • 7.18 => 17 Sep 2018
  • 7.19 => 29 Oct 2018
  • 7.20 => 10 Dec 2018

Now guessing 7.14 or higher could become 8.0 (earlier had guessed 7.17 or higher that would be in time for fall seminary students)

Cromwell:
     3.  Logos Now was changed just before L7 released (https://community.logos.com/forums/p/128822/837191.aspx ), and it's recently been changed again.

Logos Now change on 8 Aug 2016 was followed by Logos 7.0 release on 22 Aug 2016.

Thread posted on 23 Feb 2018 has puzzling Logos Now end date => Important Information about Faithlife Connect and Logos Now (thought about Veteran's Day on 11 Nov plus seems odd since date does not align with six week development cycle). An earlier Logos 8 release would provide more time to consider Faithlife Connect subscription along with purchase/rent decisions.

 I think it’s always been end of October beginning of November when they release new versions of Logos.

If you read the second post of this thread you would see that Graham pointed out Logos 7 came out in August of 2017 - or even 2016 LOLWink
