I haven't read it, but have wanted to for a while. I don't think this would be good for learning Hebrew. Are you familiar with what textual criticism is? I believe this would be more about the textual transmission of the Hebrew Bible. Will probably cover scribal errors and other various issues related to determining the original text. I believe it will also talk about ancient translations and their usefulness in performing textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible.

I'm on my way to learn hebrew too, but Basics of Biblical Hebrew is too detailed from my point of view. I own the big sized printed version. After appoaching several textbooks I've found this cheap one to be very convenient:

https://www.logos.com/product/40462/hebrew-for-reading-comprehension

And, to learn the letters, this very little one, which has lots of exercises:

Good luck!

For future studies, it will be helpful. Based on this sample and detailed table of contents and the great discount, I’ll take advantage and buy it now. The many samples on textual variants will be more appreciated once I learn some Hebrew.

I wondet if there’s a similar work for the New Testament.

I’ll take a look at your suggestions. The reason I’m using Basics of Biblical Hebrew is because I have the lectures on video that take you through the book.  I’m a visual learner so it’s helping a lot 👍😁👌

I have the DVDs too, and the workbook. But I'll leave them to do a second round. For the moment, I think I need something lighter that provides an overview and helps me with the first translations. I'll leave sublte details for later.

Regarding visual learning, let me suggest you the free daily dose of hebrew:

DAL, you forever surprise me. Why are you learning hebrew? Are you planning a chat with Jacob, or just Ezra? Joking, but illustrating.

Absent today's Israel (and Hasmonian Judea), hebrew and the OT are one and the same. Plus some random inscriptions and 'bottle caps'.

Tov's volume is poetry to the language. It makes it worth it.

Interesting. I haven't touched hebrew in about three years =x. I still have more hebrew classes to take, so I should probably jump on this and use it as a refresher. Thanks for the suggestions.

For learning the Alphabet I have been using an application called "Starting with Aleph".  It teaches you the Hebrew constants and vowels, how to pronounce them and build the sounds up into words. It has four lessons.  Each lesson begins with a Midrash (In the beginning, Time, Place & the World).

I've made a quick screen cast as that is the best way to demonstrate it.

It can be purchased from https://www.instanthebrew.com/swa_general.asp

In order to learn the basics of Hebrew Grammar I have found the following Udemy Course very helpful.  It takes a slightly different approach but I have found it very helpful so far in developing my understanding of the building blocks of Hebrew and feel it is better preparing me for jumping into the more scholarly grammars. It helps with understanding how words and sentences are structured at a basic level.

From here I'm going to move on to Learning to Use Hebrew in Logos & Hebrew Primer (in Logos) and then Van Pelt + Video Lectures and Futato's Grammar + Mobile Ed Course in Logos. The one that has just shipped should then be a good follow up to these - so that should keep me busy in Hebrew for the next phase of my life.

Thanks doc. I don't have the time for this at present, but would be interested in the future. Hopefully I remember your post!

Interesting, DAL. Did you notice how they pull similar books. And if you pick a similar book, it goes and gets even more similar books. I wonder how they can do that? Amazon does that too. Logos.com has trouble changing the book other users bought. Year after year.

Well, Tov didn't download ... I'll sit out the weekend and call my Logos refund guy. I really wonder why they have so much trouble selling .... oh yes, books.  I have Tov in hardback.

I was wondering about this as well.  But it did come late in the evening for me...

I woke up this morning and mine was there 👍😁👌

I know up until 9pm EST it still hadn’t downloaded, but I guess it did later some time in the late hours of the night.

Yep books are a tricky business to say the least!

Well, Logos consumed a couple of hours today .... software update, downloaded updated resources, indexing ... no Tov.

Will reverse another of their CC charges tomorrow. It's interesting how a Kindle purchase is literally seconds and reading. Also Accordance and OT.
