Using the “New note” button with my “Expository Sermon Preparation | 1 John 1:1-4” Notebook selected, I created a note that had two Problems:

  1. Note not attached to ANY notebook, let alone the one selected.
  2. No Anchor function available on this note.

By the way, I seem to have a lot of notes not created by the New note button that are missing the Anchor option.

P.S.

Toggling the "Show full anchor text" in the note menu does not make a difference.

Hey Tim,

In the screenshot above you do not have a notebook selected. If you have a notebook selected it will show it in the filter display above. See my screenshot.

As far as the anchor text, the option will not show if there is not text already anchored to the note. You have to add an anchor before anything is displayed.

To do this, click the dot menu on the Notes Tool and select "Add Anchor"

you do not have a notebook selected.

I don't have a notebook selected is because it is not in a notebook.  I had to show all notes to display the note in question.

David Taylor Jr:
If you have a notebook selected it will show it in the filter display above.

Since the note is not associated with any notebook, selecting a notebook will not make the note available in the filter.  You can only find it if you have no notebook selected and type part of the note text in the search box

My understanding is that when you have a notebook selected, and you create a new note, it is supposed to be associated with that notebook.  In this case that did not happen.

I was expecting to see the empty anchor section because in previous iterations a while back I saw the anchor section was open even if the note was not anchored to anything, and had the add anchor button there.  I already found the add anchor option in the note menu, but didn't put 2 and 2 together to understand the behavior I reported on the hidden anchor section.  I do like the empty anchor section hidden better - just wasn't expecting it.

Your understanding of what should happen is correct.

Do you consistently see notes not being added to a notebook when a notebook is selected?

I have seen it several times, but I would (now) classify this as intermittent (every developer's nightmare) because it doesn't do it all the time. I have not yet noticed the consistent condition in which it occurs. I'll keep watching and hoping someone else can also add to this conversation.

Tim, is it possible that you're "selecting" the notebook from the Filter facets sometimes and from the Notebook tab other times (there won't be a way to visually distinguish this in the breadcrumbs bar)? If you are selecting the notebook via the facet this won't affect new notes getting added to it (not sure if this is by design or a bug).

I am having a similar problem to Tim.

Tim, can you copy and paste into your notebook from a logos book.

Graham

Now, Control V is working. It would not work before.

It is copying and pasting inside the desktop notes.

However, the right click paste isn't working for some reason in Logos, but it works in Microsoft word.

There's something very strange going on with the notes. They just seem buggy to me.

I am currently finding myself missing the old note system.

It just took me 2 hours to get something done that should have taken 30 seconds.

Thank you Graham for your help in this matter. Your an MVP in my book.

When I right click I am also missing the add note to feature.

I like using this feature because it allows me to instantly get to the spot where the note was taken.

I would like to see:

Add not to: Notebook XYZ for example. This option also allows you to create an instant link back to your source.

That's good news.

Agreed - I forget now if it used to work in the Logos 7 notes system.

You mean how in the Logos 7 notes system you could choose which of the open Notes Documents you wanted the note to go in?

I agree that there are some issues here in not being able to choose from multiple notebooks. I'm still trying to work out how to / when to use specific notebooks and when to not do so. With the ability to filter notes by resource, the need for specific notebooks has reduced.

What use cases are you specifically looking for?

Jesse Blevins:
This option also allows you to create an instant link back to your source.

Are you referring to having a hyperlink back to the citation?

If so, that is recognised and is on the list to be added in.

Yes. If I have a notebook already open I would like for it to show up in my right click drop down selection.

Yes. That feature means a lot to me and I'm sure to many others.

I really do appreciate that the staff at Logos try to be innovative but when you put out a product that has a lot of glitches it takes the shine off of it.

I would have preferred to wait another month if needed to get it right.

Now this makes Logos kind of look bad (and they are not, they are a great company in my opinion) and before you know it the forums are filled with criticism and is over run with complaints about this bug and that bug.

Graham

Thanks for the links. I did read the article and watched a video also.

I installed the old notes but I am uncomfortable with the warning:  Creating new notes in the old notes system may cause problems when switching back to the new Notes tool.

That is why I want to go back to the old note system. I want to create new notes. I am switching back to old notes because of problems and then I am warning by doing so that will cause problems,,,,,,,

What A Mess!

Jesse, if you have a notebook open (important: you have to have selected it via the notebooks tab and not from the notebook facet), the "add a note" option in the context menu as well as the "new note" button in the notes tool (if in the same instance) will automatically assign the note to that notebook. Are you aware of this?

I probably did.  When I try to replicate the problem using your theory I can duplicate the problem every time when I select the notebook from the filter.  When I select the notebook from the notebook selector the note attaches properly.

  • I think notes should be attached to the selected notebook whether it is selected by the filter or the notebook selector - Or is there a reason why it doesn't behave this way?

Other observations/thoughts:

  1. The same thing happens when I highlight text in a resource and select "Add a note" from the right-click menu, which now makes sense but is scary if I don't have the Notes Tool open and the right notebook properly pre-selected.
  2. If I have more than one Notes Tools open, I need to make sure I have the right Notes Tool tab selected, and the right notebook selected in that tab before highlighting text and selecting "Add a note" from the right-click menu.
  3. If I have no Notes Tools open, and I highlight text in a resource and select "Add a note" from the right-click menu, it does not attach it to any notebook no matter what your last notebook selection was before closing the Notes Tool.  That makes sense, but If I remember right, L7 had an option in the right-click menu to put the note in the last note file you had open (otherwise I had to open the note file I wanted to add the note to).
  4. I think I like the L7 Note Documents options in the right-click menu where it listed the open note files (or the last note file you had open if the note files were all closed) from which you could select where the note would go to.  It would be nice to have L8 list the open/selected Notebooks in the right-click menu so you could direct your note to the proper notebook. (An maybe include the last notebook that was selected when the Notes Tool is not open.)

Now I'm thinking about how this works when highlighting text using the mobile app on my tablet - where do they go?  Probably all unattached. It would be nice if in the mobile app you could choose to have the highlight saved as unattached or be able to pre-select a notebook as the default destination (like the old app did).

A word of caution!: The last time I checked there was a bug (IMO) that caused all notes created from the context menu to go to the last filtered notebook rather than the last active notebook. In other words, if you have more than one Notes instance open with more than one Notebook selected, you couldn't choose which notebook to send it to, it simply sent it to the most recently filtered one.

I am missing this option also. From inside my Bible, I used to right click the verse and select add note to "bible study" note. It is not there in L8. It does allow me to add a note, but not to a specific notebook. Also, when I add the new note to my bible study notebook, it does not show up in the list.
