I was gone for the weekend and came back to the Logos 8 message board filled with many comments and suggestions surrounding Workflow. From what I can see, (aside from the homepage frustrations and various bugs), it is the most talked about L8 released tool.  Rightly so, as it’s an exciting tool, and so I understand all the buzz.  I’m thrilled that this release has a tool that helps the new user get their feet wet in the program and whets their appetite for learning how to study Scripture.  However, I have to continue to rally for the little guy.

Please, Faithlife, in considering all these suggestions, (half of which I don’t understand the request, never mind the potential outcome) don’t make the tool so complicated that the new user in again forgotten.  I’ve watched this program morph from Libronix to L8 and in its morphing, became an incredibly powerful program that was much too complicated for the new user to get started without a ton of training videos, “how—to guides” and lots of invested time.  So, I’m not saying the tool doesn’t need to grow—-it does, and I’m thrilled about the potential.  I’m just saying that in the process, please remember to keep in mind “the little guy.”

I am such as this.  As a little guy, I hesitate.  I have L8, but am reluctant to plunge into a workflow.  I always tell myself, ''later.''

So, simple to use, please, with the positive complexities under the hood, powering this magnificence along.

Cynthia,

You make a great point that I hope FL will consider.

I see workflows having a threefold purpose:

  1. Helping those that need help understanding how to study the Bible.
  2. Helping those that understand how to study the Bible better understand how to use the tools in Logos in the process.
  3. Helping those that understand both the above to incorporate a custom workflow into their study process.

I have seen requests for more FL provided workflows which would accomplish 1 and or 2 above.

Most of the requests for additional features, I believe, are for those building custom workflows. These custom workflows can be made available for others to download. FL should be able to assist in all requests without diminishing benefit to any of the above types of users.

If I am missing your point, let me know.

I appreciate your "reminder" Cynthia. It is a continual challenge to make Logos as powerful and customizable as possible without drifting into a sea of complexity.

Hello John:

Not missing the point at all.  Spot on.  I just want to make sure FL keeps 1 & 2 in the FRONT of their mind and not an after thought. :)

I agree 100% Cynthia! When I first saw Workflows my immediate thought was, "This will be great for the visitors of BibleStudy.Tips! Now I can create workflows that coincide with the methods I'm teaching them"

This is a great tool for the "little guy" & those newer to Bible study and Bible software in general. Sometimes we forget that in our years of using programs like Logos how complex it can be. The same with studying the Bible. We forget how much work we had to put in on the front end for things that are now second nature to us.

Although I have had Logos since version X, I have never gotten deep with the capabilities because it is just too complicated and confusing.  So I stayed with the Guides and ran the Search Everything option often.  I do feel a little more comforted with the new v8 layout to venture into deeper waters... but still timid when I see threads about complex search parameters, or collection rules, or Notes manipulations.  I did open the Notes file the other day, but have not watched any MP vids yet on it, but I could not figure out how to use it on my own- so I quit until I can watch a video.

v8 is a move in the right direction, but still lots of room for improvement on the "little guy" hand holding.

I'm one of the little, little guys.  I've been around for years with Libronix/Logos.  Follow the forums faithfully, watch the videos a few times over and over, faithfully.   I've always been able to get what I need out of Logos despite probably only using 5% of it's capabilities.  With all that being said, I am so impressed with Logos 8 and so thankful.  Thank you!  Thank you Faithlife for the Workflows!   Now with all that being said, I've watched the Notes video over and over, played with my old notes, new notes and I'm lost Smile

Hello Graham:

If you don't mind...I'm going to head over there as well and ask some questions.  I have to admit that while I see improvements in the New Notes, I really don't think I know how to use it as meant to be, and so I'm afraid to do too much with it.  I'll start a thread over there now.
