System locks up on Bible Word Study

Last night I encountered a series of steps that consistently caused my PC to freeze and become completely unresponsive to any mouse movement or key press. I had to use the power button to cycle the power every time I tried the following steps.

1. Open Logos 8.

2. Use the main topic launcher to start a guide on Deacons.

3. Clicked on the word "Deacon" in the Bible Word Study wheel to get the detail list of verses.

4. Clicked on the Greek diakonos above one set of the verses to open a new Bible Word Study on that particular Greek lemma.

5. System locked.

I'm not sure whether this is a Logos problem or something wrong my my PC, but I'm hoping you can give me some tips for how to diagnose what is actually happening and determine a course of action for fixing it. Since I can reproduce this symptom every time only when using the Logos software, I'm posting here for some suggestions for resolving it.

It works fine for me when I follow the steps you outline so it may well be something specific to your PC

It's extremely difficult for a regular program to freeze your entire PC. (One of the jobs of the operating system is protecting programs from each other, and protecting the system itself.) So this generally points to a hardware problem. A basic troubleshooting step is to ensure there's no overheating by checking that all fans are working, and blowing out any accumulated dust (e.g., with compressed air).

I suspect there is a bad "sector" on the hard drive. I put sector in quotation marks because it is a solid state drive, and I don't know if it is physically organized at all like a magnetic disk drive. I have an app to monitor the health of the drive, and it reports everything is okay, but every once in a while the system locks up for no apparent reason. The situation with Logos and the word study was the first time I could repeat the steps and lock up the system at the same point every time. However, the next day I tried, it did not lock up at the same spot. Rather, the Logos log recorded a crash because the system could not find the database. I tried again, and it worked fine.

This has been an intermittent but aggravating problem for a while. Can anyone suggest a low-level diagnostic for solid state drives and maybe also for RAM (in case the problem is there and not the disk)? I have done some searches but haven't found anything I felt was completely reliable.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you're running a recent version of Windows, typing Windows Memory Diagnostic into the start menu should bring up a built-in tool that will test your memory.

I ran Windows diagnostics on both memory and the solid state drive. Both reported no errors at all. Yet something causes my system to lock up suddenly and without warning every once in a while. I'm not sure what to do next, but if it happens while I'm working in Logos, at least I'll have the log file to check.
