Hello,

Is it worth the effort to tag a library of about 25k resources?

Thanks!

It depends.

But IMO I think the more resources one have, the more one need to tag it and/or arrange them in collections, etc. in order not to be lost.

And also try to rely on the community tags and using rules to create dynamic collections. I just migrated all my personal tags and updated my collections to do just that. It leverages the community effort to keep track of increasingly larger collection.

e.g. I created a dynamic collection by this rule: {CommunityTag "church-history", "historychurch", "apostolicfathers", "church-fathers", "churchfathers"}

Thank you!  :)

Is there a way to have all your resources assigned a community tag in one procedure?

Take care.

There's a setting once activated, all community tags will be in your library.

https://wiki.logos.com/library__ mentioned this but do not have the instruction to do so. (Just go to Program Settings, check "Show Community Tags")

Try to search your library using the syntax I shown above to test if it works.

Also you can right click on columns in your library to check the Community Tag to show them explicitly. Per resource you can also see the tags in the info panel.

This topic comes up quite often. It is a lot of work to individually tag each resource but I have chosen to go this route and have not regretted it. By pausing to tag each resource it allows you to think about it, perhaps looking at the index and applying the tags you want. I consider it part of my familiarization with the resources I own.

You don't want Community Tags, as these represent what others think about your resource. You want your own tags, and these appear under the heading My Tags in Library. You can tag multiple resources, but you wouldn't want to assign the same tag to all resources. See this wiki for more details.

Regardless of the value you may put into community tags, they are are simply there (that is, if you choose to have them displayed at all in the program settings). A community tag is assigned to a resource once a number of users have assigned the same tag to a resource. Thus, if a resource has no community tag assigned, this means there simply aren't enough identical tags on it. So there can be no procedure to assign it (other than asking e.g. in the forums, "users, please tag that resource" which is kind of silly).

Overall, I think 90% of my library has some kind of community tag - but that doesn't mean it's always helpful. Obviously some users find value in tagging books as Vyrso, where I would simply use edition:ebook to filter for those. But especially if you want to tag your library for topics, the communitytags will give you hints. And if you search your library for books on a specific topic (such as Christmas, Easter, Lent, Finances...), the communitytags may help you find books that are not identified through subject or title.

I sometimes use communitytags to verify my own tagging e.g. I tag fiction books as such, and the communitytag may help me find those I overlooked (and sometimes I differ, e.g. I have tagged as "biography" two books that come with a communitytag of "fiction").

Hope this helps.

That’s just an opinion though. And while it isn’t the best (comparing to manually tagging) but its a start. I think suggesting manual tagging all can be the goal but meanwhile it has to start with something. I recall when I start with hundreds of resources tagging all of them is very laborious. But we are talking tens of thousands here so it's going to take time...

Thank you Bruce.  Very helpful.   MP recommends 3 minutes per day with new resources.  Let's see: 3  minutes per day = 10 resources divided by 25k equals forever!  Idea

I can't find the first one but the second on Logos' web. I can tell from the excerpt it really is a biography rather than fiction. But I can imagine people reading the title only would have immediately tagging it as fiction and move on is not coming back!

You could start by doing commentaries first. It is much easier to go through huge amount of these if you tag by series (a series of commentary is often on the order of 100 resources.)

Also Mark Barnes already did some heavy lifting: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/88829.aspx?PageIndex=1. This is also a community effort but his is methodical, and one man (uniform) vs. averages over all user base (varies.) If you trust it, you can save those documents locally and use it as your own (see instruction there.) And you could even tag your resources base on those collections.

I went ahead and started with Mark Barnes commentary tagging. It's gonna take a while just to absorb all the new resources and figure out what to do with them.

MP has some good advice but I don't think that this applies to tagging. Certainly many resources can be batched at don't need that kind of time but you are right that it will take a good amount of time. I maintain that will be time well spent.
