I thought we'd be able to hover over note and see the name of the note instead of just note in 8.3?

I cannot see enough of your screen to tell, but do you have a notebook selected? If you select a notebook, it should change the tab title to the name of the notebook.

What changed in 8.3 is the ability to see the name of the Notebook that is open, not the name of an individual note

Ok, so notebooks, not notes themselves.  I just tried notebooks and they work.  if I have several notes open that doesn't work, only says notes as shown in my screenshot...those are two individual notes.

Yes, it is just notebook names. In fact, to my knowledge, individual notes don't have names in the new system.

So not helpful for folks that use tags for notes verse notebooks.  If I have several notes open then I still only see a row of tabs saying Notes.

Yeah I believe you're right about names for notes except I use the first line for my name and skip a couple lines for the body of information.  Apples notes app is the same way.

Sorry that the feature added to 8.3 doesn't mean your needs. I'll be sure your feedback is seen.

Just to make sure I understand your request, you'd like the tool tip (which shows when you hover on the tab) to show the first few words of the note you have selected in the Notes tool?

This sounds like a different request.

"When the Notes tool is filtered by a single Tag, change the title in the panel tab to the name of the tag."

Is that right?

Disregard the tags info.  When I have several notes open I'd like to be able to know what each note is either like the notebooks now do or when hovered over.  Probably the hover function would be nice as it could be longer test...say the first three words in the first sentence.  I use the first line as a title/name for each note.

I hope this makes sense...

Again, thanks.

Perhaps if the first line of a note was treated as a note title?

This was discussed during the early beta testing of the notes tool. If I recall correctly, the intention was for the first line to serve as a title for those who wanted titles for their notes. I know that the idea of adding ability to assign a note title was suggested, it was added to the list of items to be considered.

Or perhaps we could just have note titles back? Then we could sort our notebooks by title again? For those notes that contain content created apart from resource anchors?

True. It would also be useful if we ever implemented single-note sharing.

And to bring it back to the OP, I suppose that if notes had titles, we could display the title in the panel tab. If no notebook is selected. If only one note is selected. If that note has a title. And it could change frequently as you cycle through notes in the list.

I don't know, to me that sounds messy and confusing.

In any case, note titles is not something planned for the immediate future, but we are considering it for some later release. I appreciate you all sharing your thoughts and needs.

I am not sure that I could describe it with those adjectives... as I was reading this I was thinking beautiful, functional, informative, useful, thoughtful.... no, not messy or confusing, at least not from the users side.

Having titles is really a basic necessity for proper organization. Maybe this isn't the OP of this post, but a lot of people previously created unanchored notes, notes that were simply stored in Logos without necessarily being connected to a resource. the new way that L8 notes allows us to search for notes in resources is amazing! But I have (and many other people as well) many notes that are organized in what is now called Notebooks that are not anchored to anything. Sorting by reference or date does nothing for me. Any organization of note previously created in this way is shot... and it is making me very cautious about using Logos to create new unanchored notes. Was this the intention of Faithlife? To move us completely away from using Logos Notes as a way to store notes other than those that are anchored to a resource? If so then I might as well go back to OneNote for all these other notes so that I can actually organize and find them again. Problem is, all these notes are Bible related... and so it helps to have the automatic hyperlinking of verse references (and even other resources through the awesome ctrl+alt+c function to copy the exact location in a Logos resource) that comes in Logos Notes. So now we are stuck with not being able to easily find our notes because of no note titles (and therefore no sorting by title) or doing it somewhere else and not being able to use our references as effectively.

Please bring back note titles! Please!!!!! :)

Actually, please don't! Now that I got your ire up, let me explain. 😜I'm actually fine with having note titles, but they should not feel like a disjointed bit of info like the L7 ones did IMO.

A styled first line could perform all the functions of a separate title field. Using styling in the note body would have several advantages. Note: As I envision styling, all styles would have a hotkey as well as having a couple of auto-style options such as first-line = Title & copy/pasted material = Quote.

  • The same development work (supporting styles) would additionally provide a vastly improved UX in note content formatting. This is the (admittedly selfish) primary reason for wanting Styles to handle the Titles problem.
  • Another advantage I see has to do with the fact that I would like to see the ability to search within styles and having a simple styled line for the title would keep the search syntax intuitively consistent (with no additional code). For example I'd like to search for {Title: "A Note Title"}, {Heading 2: My Heading}, or {Quote: propitiation}.
  • Another advantage (given that we'd have the option to auto-style the first line as Title) would be the ease of typing (no tabbing or clicking, just a simple enter/return). Even if the code provided for this functionality, the majority of users would not likely find this to be intuitive.
  • This would be consistent with the behavior of other apps such as the iOS notes app and would, therefore, feel intuitive.
  • There'd be no need to redesign the Notes list and editor (and cause more problems/frustration).

I don't need a title for organization. I can see how the implementation of a title could make if messy and confusing ... I can see how using the first line as a title could be a useful compromise ...I can see how  one could make a specific title field useful. What I don't know is the underlying architecture's adaptability to each possibility. What I wish is that people like yourself who have a very vested interest in the problem would describe in detail and with screen shots what you need to be able to do. It would both permit users to suggest alternative ways to get what you need and permit Logos to determine an implementation that supports everyone's needs.

I am after the function, not really the form :).

In regards to your suggestion regarding styles that act as a heading, I am fine with, and would love to have, styles for notes; especially with user editable short-cuts. My question would be, would they be able to create it so that the Notebooks could be sorted by Titled/Heading/First-Line-Style like we could sort by Title in L7?

In some cases it is not necessary for organization, but what I am really talking about in my post above is about notebooks that contain only unanchored notes. You can't sort by reference (there are no anchored references), you can't sort by time (time does not help you find content that is organized by title - like many of mine are)… there are no other means to sort.

I apologize if my description was not detailed enough, and I don't always have the bandwidth to upload images, being a missionary in the Philippines as I am.

On the right is the current notes system. Looks beautiful, is very functionally with regards to sorting notes that are anchored to a resource, and is also very functional with regards to looking at and quickly accessing all of a users notebooks. but what about unanchored notes inside a notebook? How do I make unanchored notes in a Notebook without a title? How will I be able to get back to that note later when I want to find it? I can't rely on the date, if I could remember the date that I made a note in the past then I probably would have such a good memory that I would not need to write notes. I can't rely on reference to sort, since these are unanchored notes... there is no reference to sort by. There are no other ways to sort.

On the Left is the L7 notes system. Clunky, difficult to scan through all your various files (now notebooks), and with no way to find notes that are attached to a resource without looking through the resource itself. With all those issues, the old notes system was able to sort inside each file by the title of the note. Here is an example (a smaller one) of notes that need a title because they are not anchored to a resource.

In brief, the right makes this notebook messy and confusing, while the old system keeps the notes organized and in order. Not to mention that it is harder to scroll through the new system because they have not yet brought back compact view. Of course, with no title, what would compact view be anyway?

Does Faithlife want us to no longer make notes that are unanchored? And if not, then how are we to sort those unanchored notes?
