All,

I was wondering if the Windows Desktop version of Logos allows users to selectively store library resources on the local PC.  In the past, I know that any (and ALL) resources that were licensed to a user were automatically downloaded to their PC when the program was opened.

The problem is that I have amassed a huge amount of resources over the years that I have been a Logos customer.  I just got a new PC with a solid state hard drive that is only 512 GB.  If I were to install Logos on that PC, and all of my resources were automatically downloaded, I would quickly fill that hard drive.  So, my question is, is it possible to be selective about what or which resources are downloaded?  Ideally, I would like it if the program would only download resources on an "as needed" basis.  For example, if I wanted to open my preferred Bible version to Genesis and wanted to open Allan Ross's, "Creation and Blessing" commentary, I am totally fine with downloading that resource.  But I don't want all of the resources that I own to be downloaded automatically and clog up my hard drive.

I wish Logos would work the way OneDrive works.  I have many files stored on OneDrive.  But they are only downloaded locally when I open those files.  I wish Logos worked that way.  Grateful in advance for any responses.  Thank you.

By the way, I know all about the Logos web app and use it often.  But it still is not as full-featured as Logos Desktop.  So please no replies suggesting that I should use the web app.  Thanks.

If I understand what you're asking for it is currently being developed and was almost released this last cycle but they chose not to so that they could fine tune it some more.

Jeremy is correct. That feature remains in beta. Unless something unforeseen is discovered  I would expect it in the stable release of 8.4

Thank you both, Jeremy and Fred.  Do you know when 8.4 will be released?

Ideally, I would like it if the program would only download resources on an "as needed" basis.  For example, if I wanted to open my preferred Bible version to Genesis and wanted to open Allan Ross's, "Creation and Blessing" commentary, I am totally fine with downloading that resource.

When installing, you will have a choice of some "curated" sets of resources e.g. Minimal, Recommended. The choices made for you are not sophisticated, and I delete about half of the 80 that I get (from a library of 2100 books), and have to manually select another 240 to have a library that is useful for Guides and Searches. So beware that the Guides and Tools will only use the resources that are downloaded. In Library (v8.4+), you will see these as "This Device" under the Devices facet. You can also see your books "Not on This Device", or in the "Cloud". Only Search will use these books, in a separate section called Cloud Results.

So, if you want Ross' commentary, you have to download it e.g. from the right-click menu in Library. If you open it, you will have a preview of its content and a Download now button.

I suggest you start planning and organising the books you want ASAP. You can do this by sorting Library on Type, because you will need books from most of these types e.g Bibles, Bible Commentaries, Bible Apparatus, Lexicons, Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Bible Harmony, Bible Cross-Reference Index, Lectionary. If you are  a keen Searcher you will need many Glossary and Manual resources, as these document the search datasets. If you like Syntax Search you will need Clause Visualization resources. You don't need the Biblical People and Biblical Places types.

My method (as a Beta tester) is to Rate the ones I need with 4 stars or higher. Then I can select them in Library with myrating:>3, and download them in bulk. Or you can use a simple Tag.

The hardest type to select from is Monograph. If you haven't tagged them yourself, you might find Community Tags helpful to identify books on Creation,Sermon, Eschatology, Theology, etc. e.g. communitytag:creation.

Thanks so much, Dave.  Excellent advice.  Related to that, I'm hoping that if I run a Passage Guide, for example, it will return hits for every resource that I have, whether in the cloud or local, and that I can pick and choose which resources I want to open and download.  I'm guessing that I'm much like other users and only select the resources from the passage guide that I want to open (which is typically a small subset of the resources the Passage Guide returns).

Please note my comments above:

Only Search will use books in the Cloud, in a separate section called Cloud Results.

Your Collections (in 8.4+) will only show local/downloaded resources, so use your current Collections as a basis for resources you need to rate/tag as local.
