Hi,

is anyone able to recommend a resource that deals with chiams in the Bible? The best would be a book by book chiastic outline of Bible, if a resource like that exists.

Thanks.

The Literary Structure of the Old Testament: A Commentary on Genesis–Malachi by David Dorsey does that for the OT. I don't know of one that does it for the New.

The Companion Bible provides helpful examples of chiasmus in its margins. See the structure of the book of James, for example.

There is a book on this subject by Nils W. Lund, Chiasmus in the New Testament: A Study in the Form and Function of Chiastic Structures, 1942, University of North Carolina Press. Reprinted in 1992 by Hendrickson Publishers. ISBN 0-943575-92-3.

I have given a list of the "inverted parallelisms" (another term for chiasms) in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge at Genesis 3:19, key word return. This resource is available in Logos.

The Shape of Biblical Language: Chiasmus in the Scriptures and Beyond Edition 2 by John Breck  is the best I know.

I have placed a note at Genesis 43:3 in my book, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, on the figure of speech chiasmus.

I knew that note existed, but could not find it using a printed copy of the book, for the note is not listed in any of the New Treasury indexes, so I could not include the reference in my previous comment above. Today I accessed my updated edition of this resource, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, and found the sought-for note using its more complete indexes.

A bit distant from chiastic resources, but for the curious:

Cross-reference resources, treasuries, etc get super-mixed up in the search engines.  I assume Jerome updated his Ultimate, since this article.

I did a similar search, but in Theological Journals.

chiastic OR chiasm

The Redaction of Genesis by Gary A. Rendsburg

"Let us assume a paradigm cycle of ten episodes or units, which are aligned in the order ABCDEE'D'C'B'A'.  (The order of the Primeval History, the only one without chiasm, would be ABCDEA'B'C'D'E'.)  Each chapter begins with such an outline, presenting the matched units.  I then proceed to the meatiest part of each chapter, the presentation of each pair of matched units within each cycle, first A and A', then B and B', etc.  After a brief discussion of the parallel ideas, motifs, and story lines, I present the theme-words which highlight the relationship between the two units.  First I list those theme-words which have been adduced by previous scholars (mainly Sasson for Primeval History, Sarna for Abraham Cycle, and Fishbane for Jacob Cycle), and then I advance my own contributions." Gary Rendsburg, Redaction of Genesis (Eisenbrauns, Winona Lake, Indiana, 1986), 4.

Denise (and all), I have been working on an updated version or edition of The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury since 2016. I use it for my own personal study of the Bible. It is only a file in docx format at this time.

Thank you for posting the link to my Real Bible Study website.

I would love it if you were to finish updating that and were able to make it available either in Logos format or as a docx for compilation into a Personal Book.

I have been following this thread because I have an interest in the chiastic structures.  I would also be happy to see this eventually in Logos format

Again, sorry to wander off the chiastic path a little, but on Jerome's page above, after the contents list, etc, he lists the abbreviations he assigns. Mmm, mmm, mmm ... a Logos search dream! I can see several yummy rabbit trails awaiting.

You ought to be able to find something in this published bibliography. (Note that one of the two reviews gave it one star, because it only provided a bibliography. C- for reading comprehension there, pal.)

This volume (same editor) has some chapters dealing with the Biblical Hebrew, the New Testament, as well as Bible-adjacent literature.

I bought the book, Joshua's Spiritual Warfare which is great and explains chiastic structures in the Bible.
