initial download stuck on "everything"

I support a group of Bible translators in east Africa using Logos in a limited bandwidth location. Under Logos 7, we followed a procedure for new installs which involves copying a portion of the install tree from another user and canceling the initial download. The procedure is documented at https://wiki.logos.com/quick_installation_onto_multiple_computers

Now, under Logos 8 I am faced with an initial download screen at startup that is supposed to allow me to choose what resources to download (minimal/recommended/everything). Unfortunately, the menu button in unresponsive and there seems to be no way to choose anything but "Everything".

Is there a way to bypass this screen or get it to work properly?

Thanks,

Steve Pence

Sorry, neglected to mention we are on W10 1903. The Logos 8 installer was downloaded today, but since I can't get passed the start screen, I can't report you'all the exact Logos version.

The option to selectively download is not available to all users.  It is only available to those who have upgraded to any Logos 8 Collection that does not have "Basic" as part of its name.  This facility has only been added quite recently.

However, once you have downloaded "Everything", you are then free to hide resources, and they will be deleted from your hard drive.  This article explains how to hide resources.

This is not a satisfactory solution if Mbeya still has too many resources for the limited bandwidth (and not necessarily limited drive space). Why has this restriction been applied? Why does it now require users to purchase a non-"Basic" Logos 8 Collection? What qualifies as a "Collection"?

Hi Jo,

If there was no way to avoid the initial download of all resources, there would be no point whatever of having a posted procedure on the Logos wiki telling us in great detail how to copy resources from other installs in order to save bandwidth. The article specifically says that it has been updated for 8.4 and cloud resources. Unfortunately, the article doesn't mention this "new" screen and how to deal with it.

I think we need to hear from the Logos people who wrote the article.

The wiki is written by users just as the forums are primarily responded to by users. Joe, who responded above, is a Faithlife employee as you can tell by the icon below his picture.

That is really helpful to know. I didn't realize it was a user wiki. Also, I see that it was my colleague Dave Hooton that authored that page.  I would like to add my voice to his and say that this change could impact us significantly in many areas where we work in Bible translation. We would really appreciate any help or suggestion Logos could give.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi Dave,

Any Logos 8 Basic base pack collection qualifies.  We do not consider the Logos 8 Basic to be a base package, and we have more than one version of the Basic.  So I just wanted to make it clear that ordering any version of the Logos 8 Basic does not give the option for selective downloading.  Sorry if my attempt to clarify that was actually confusing.

Until very recently, this option was not available to anyone.  Having lived for some time in a country with poor bandwidth, I can appreciate that it can be frustrating not to be able to use it.  I do apologize for the inconvenience.

Will buying (for example) the Logos 8 Starter Feature Upgrade allow someone to use this feature?

That is written by me for Windows users. I just tried  Method 3 and it works with v8.9 beta just as described 4 months ago for v8.5 (presumably because I have a Logos 8  package other than Basic). So, if you have the disk space for all resources (Everything), click the Start Download button, but close the window as soon as the actual download starts at Step 2 (in the window), then scan the resources from the other user's installation. This avoids the  bandwidth problem.

Hi Steve,

I do apologize for the inconvenience.

I have a few suggestions.

During the installation of the file logossetup.exe, you can choose the option to do a Custom Installation.  Normally this is used to select an alternative location for Logos.  But it you also have the ability to disable automatic updates.  Disabling automatic updates means updates will be postponed until you agree to them.  This can be beneficial if bandwidth is poor or unpredictable.  If Logos has already been installed, you will need to uninstall and re-install to be able to choose Custom Installation.

If it is less expensive to do downloads after business hours, be sure to go to Tools > Program Settings and the hours during which the download should take place.  Please keep in mind that you will need the Logos program needs to be open and running during these hours for the download to actually take place.  And you will need to enable Automatic Downloads in Program Settings if you want this download to happen in your absence, without agreeing to an on-screen prompt.

Downloading will take place much more quickly using an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi.  This can be helpful if you only want to download during a certain time frame.

If the same user will be using Logos on more than one computer, you could do a full download on one computer, hide the resources, and then use the method in the wiki article to copy the resources to other computers without having to download them all over again.  Please keep in mind that while many users find these instructions useful, we cannot guarantee they will work for all users, and we do not provide support for this process.  However you can ask for advice in this forum should you encounter difficulties.

I hope at least one of these suggestions will be helpful for your situation.

Yes, but why was this done?

The Basic package is supposed to provide a Minimal install option. The fact that it doesn't is a bug. We already have a case for fixing this, but I don't have information about when this will be fixed.

Dear Andrew,

That is great news us in Bible translation - just knowing that there is a case for this issue and the it is on someone's to do list.

Much appreciated.

Steve
