Hello

I am very thankful for logos, but now I'm unable to work offline on logos when not connected to the internet. What kind of way of work is that when a program that used to work fine offline suddenly doesn't work and tells me to login first!

I don't have internet all the time and can't work this way.

Is there a solution for this?

Thanks and greetings

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Most Logos features work offline for me just fine. Some require an internet connection.

What part of Logos is not working offline for you?

Hi Bruce, I can't even open the program. I remember that (I presume before the update) there was the window that opens when starting the program with the option "work offline".

Now I can't even open the program without login in to the Faithlife account. And since I still don't have internet I can't work yet.

Greetings and thanks

Obihan,

If you hold CTRL (on Windows) or CMD (on macOS) and then trying to launch the app it should give you the option to work offline. Can you let me know if that works? I'm able to do so without problems. Also if it doesn't could you post your logs? It might help us see what is going on.

 Thanks for your help Philana

Pressing control and starting the program didn't work but I temporarily connected my computer with the internet on my cell phone, then logged into the program. It updated something in the library. After closing the program and reopening it offline it worked fine and I didn't need to sign in again. Apparently there was missing a step after the resource update to configure the program and so it wouldn't start.

Thank you very much for your help and time.

Hi Obihan, "maybe" you didn't quite get the message right, I have had the same problem.  If you hold the control button down and keep it down, before you try to open logos and keep it down while you are waiting for it to open.  So hold it down the whole time.  And then when the window opens up it should give you the option to work off line.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Obihan, I hope you are able to get it to working using the method Philana described.

Hi Mathew.

I tried pressing and holding the control button but either I didn't press it long enough or it didn't work.

For now I can work offline and I'll keep in mind your advice for the next time.

Thanks

I had the same issue last year and the developers had to deploy a fix to my account. Something about a credentialling error.

I recall a time when starting the program with no internet connection would result in an automatic offer to work offline.  Requiring someone to "know" that they are to hold down the CTRL key is not a good behavior.

This happened to me on vacation earlier this year.  I knew I would be off the internet for 5 days and planned to do a lot of studying using Logos..  The last time I had been without an internet connection Logos had automatically provided a way to work offline.  I was in a panic when Logos would not start on this trip.  Naturally,  I was offline, so I could not connect to the forum to find out how to connect or even get the Logos support telephone number.  I had to pay a roaming surcharge on my phone in order to get the required information, That should not have been required!

Logos should be changed back to the old model where they will allow you to automatically work offline.

I will be traveling to Guatemala later this week on a missions trip.  I disconnected my laptop from the internet and booted it.  Logos came up offline without any questions.  I'm hoping that this is the behavior once I am in Guatemala.  However, I know now to be prepared to use the CTRL key.

Philana, is there any chance it could be changed back?

I also found myself locked out of Logos this year when I was guest-lecturing in a college where I didn't have an internet connection. At the time, I didn't know I had to hold down CTRL, and it wasn't a good advert for Logos when I couldn't get it to work for the students.

The problem of being locked out is unrelated to the current behavior of not prompting for a login when disconnect from the internet. Even if the old behavior was restored, you would still occasionally run into the problem of getting locked out.

The bug causes the application to occasionally invalidate the stored credentials. Since you can not start the application without valid stored credentials (even when working offline), you end up locked out. This is why the problem is intermittent. Logging in once fixes the problem by storing fresh valid credentials, and allow you to run offline again.

The change in login behavior during start up made it so that a successful login is not required to start the application. This results in a significant improvement to application start up times. If login fails due to being unable to talk to the server, the application runs anyway. It will continue attempting to connect to the internet as required by various features. This does not invalidate the stored credentials, meaning that everything should continue to work correctly when the internet is available again.

If you plan on working offline and are concerned about encountering the bug, the best solution is to go to your program settings while you still have an internet connection and turn off the "Use Internet" option. Then restart the application to verify that the program starts successfully. This option makes it so that you don't have to remember to hold down CTRL every time you start the application, but is otherwise identical to that mechanism.
