Reformed Logos Users Group on Facebook

I would like to invite folks who are Logos Bible Software users to join the "Reformed Logos Users Group" on Facebook.

The purpose of the group is to help one another find resources that will be a help. Me personally, I have over 8,000 resources and sometimes, I don't even know the value of a resource when it comes to whether or not it's a solid work or a synergistic heavy work.

Everything from a "have you seen this book" post to a "I've got this book and I don't even remember buying it; is it a solid work?" Especially welcomed are particular sales on hidden gems.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Only requirements for membership is you're either Reformed or Calvinistic and you use Logos.

Well, Facebook obviously and absolutely has issues; there's no questioning that fact. Maybe helping other likeminded folks in the RLU will give you a fresh look at Facebook. There are a lot of Reformed and Calvinistic groups.

This is a group that is supporting other Logos users. There are a couple other groups on Facebook for other particular denominations or theological leanings. This is a group that can and will help people.

Yea you tell him Wilson. The only reason we have "guidelines" is some of the people complained enough to logos so I guess they thought they should do something. But remember they are guidelines not rules.

Alberto, Wilson did give fair warning and preview; the Christian group fights like cats and dogs. So, FB might be quite appropriate.

I disagree with your interpretation of the guidelines and I've seen other posts very similar. I hope that you all can sleep tight tonight knowing this a monster that no longer shows up in our Forums.

Stuff like this is exactly why I stopped helping out here a long time ago. Years ago. When they went from BBS to the Forums, it simply tanked in quality. We used to be a tight knit bunch, really.

Because, quite frankly, the reach of the Faithlife Platform is highly disjunctive and the reach is greatly restrictive. When I brought up this concept last year, it was brought up why not try using the Faithlife platform and I just find it a hard way to go.

How many participants are there in the Faithlife group?

Personally, Wilson using Alberto for his chew-toy was a bit strange ... many attempt to interpret the guidelines. Pretty normal.

On the other hand, the same guidelines prohibit what Wilson seems to invite doing (unrestrained 'discussion'). Therefore, his original intent might have merit (absent the chewing part).

I think it'd be hard to discuss books denominationally and not get in trouble at FL? "This author's anti-deluvian old-earth bias reeks of pre-modern messy-anic zeal. I was impressed!"

M.J. I'm just seeing various Reformed groups with varying group sizes from 2 to 33 and most of them with no posts in years, months, or once in the last month.

I started this Facebook group yesterday and I have 50 or 51 members. I'm just being realistic, not trying to be hard to get along with here.

For the record, I only posted in this thread because of how Alberto was treated when he attempted to follow Guideline #6 via an authentic gentle reminder. I'm not actually offended at all; it's just that if I have a bias related to post count, it's in favour of being extra-kind to those with hardly any posts, and I thought he was treated rudely. My way of stepping in just happened to be less oblique than that of Denise, whose considered subtlety often exceeds my own.

At any rate, all these extra posts may well have succeeded in increasing the membership of the FB group in question, so perhaps things work out for everyone. [:)]

C'mon, MJ. You know as well as the rest of us that the FL groups are absolutely worthless as actual *social* media. They are little different from the three-generation-old bulletin boards where you and I started on the internet, they are practically invisible to anyone outside these forums, and are not really able to be advertised much of anywhere. A FB group, in spite of all the drawbacks of that platform, may well have two thousand users in the first few months.

It's a no-brainer, really.

I read the guidelines and I disagree. A FB user's page is not "his web page."

In addition, the Free Logos Software FB page as well as a couple others were discussed/advertised in the forums (IIRC) without anyone objecting. IN addition, personal websites for FB training, which charge for their services, are regularly mentioned here without issue (like Danny Z's and LLN).

Would people be less offended by this post if it was FL group as opposed to a Facebook group? Other than platform name to me there is no difference. A Facebook group is not a personal website no more than a FL group is a personal website. They are both platforms for users with a similar interest to share ideas, thoughts, knowledge and assist one another. For one the dominant colour is blue, the other one green but both are displayed on a white background with black text. I could go on with more comparisons as to what is similar between a Facebook group and a FL group but will spare those who might get offended.

So if a Facebook group is a personal website then that means a FL group is also a personal website and hence anyone sharing about a FL group on these forums is in violation of the guidelines based on the precedent some would like to set as a standard for everyone else to be measured against.

There’s an old song that asks “What’s this world coming too?”. Seems appropriate still today.

I do appreciate somewhat of a defense by Doc and Disciple. I think the objections are baseless.

I could well be wrong, but I actually think the core of the objection is nothing anymore complicated than a predilection against the Calvinist persuasion. I've seen it more overtly over even smaller issues.

I'm sitting here looking at 65 people who have joined this rancid Facebook group since yesterday morning when it was created. 15 joined overnight while I was asleep.

I wasn't referring to MJ. I should have made that clear. MJ, in my opinion, just seems to want to push FL groups on me so hard for whatever reason of allegiance. I think MJ just wants FLG to work so bad. FLG is a great idea, but there's no impetus by the users of Logos to use it, IMHO.

FLG is a great idea, but there's no impetus by the users of Logos to use it, IMHO.

Sharing documents in the group should be, and I know the SDA user group is very active in that area (sharing Community Notes would be, too, but it didn't really take off)

Another, quite new development is buying multiple copies if some resources for the group at a bulk rebate.

But if you mean "use it" in the way heated discussions run in Facebook groups or Twitter feeds: I've not seen that happening in FL groups and somehow I don't think MJ wants that to happen in FL groups. The now defunct FL site Christiandiscourse.com was meant for this and was used very actively. When it went down due to some technical issues, FL didn't bring it back to live and I think a user picked it up and it's still running someplace.

I don't disagree with you. On the other hand, for what you have stated above as the groups aims - not: discussing theology, which would be against the rules, but - :

the action is in the Logos user forum, possibly best in the reformed subforum. One would need to exercise caution when ascribing or denying "solid work", but otherwise I'd assume more readers and especially knowledgeable readers from around the world that are eager to help others finding resources or give insight into the content of those.

I personally don't understand the membership restrictions for this purpose, though. But since it's your private enterprise, you can set those as you like. Wishing you all the best with the group - if it helps to enlarge the overall footprint of Logos across all channels, I'm glad you go for it.

Well, our VW camper had been protected by its little Shinto amulet with nary a scratch after 15 years. But our electric wonder was totally unprotected. After 5 years, the pressure was unbearable, so we dropped by the closest Shinto shrine (Honolulu). We purchased the correct amulet, but on the way out, I dropped it, and then accidentally stepped on it. There were audible gasps from the other visitors, and I knew disaster had truly struck. We certainly couldn't put the amulet any where near the electric wonder, so we're now forced to go back to Honolulu again.

There are a variety of reasons, all of which center around argumentation. For a real life example which used to happen to me personally, if I go into the Logos Reformed group looking for a book recommendation and I mention a book or another reformed individual mentions a book there are nosy people from outside the Reformed part of our Faith that would get offended at the recommendation or even get angry when someone says, "But the book you suggested is by a Charismatic." it's just easier to say this is a reformed/calvinistic group and leave it at that. I have had this scenario happen and it simply gets very tiring. This is just book recommendations, but the issues of course open up into other areas.

No offense is mean to anyone. But with somethings, it is just easier to exclude people who don't see things the way you do.

The best definition of Reformed I've seen is "Calvinism with a Creed." Without the Creed, it's just Calvinism. Technically, I'm just Calvinist because the church I attend isn't Creedal, per se. With that being said, it is very Calvinistic. Others may disagree with this definition; Carl Truett says you can't be Reformed without being Presbyterian. I find that nonsensical. On the other end of the scale, there's an SBC Pastor, Matt Chandler, who says his congregation is Reformed Charismatic. That's nonsensical, as well. Reformed Theology and Charismatic Theology don't mix well, whatsoever.

Also, in regards to Reformed and where I'm at personally, while my church doesn't subscribe to a creed, I do. I subscribe to the 1689 2nd London Baptist Confession.

Hey, everyone. I'm just dropping in after this thread was reported.

I'll just say a couple things:

First, I wouldn't consider the OP to be in violation of guideline 4d, "advertise yourself...". I suppose the rule could be interpreted that way in the strictest sense; but the guiding principle is "no self-promotion," and I don't think linking to an alternate Logos community site is a problem. If you used the FB group to advertise a product, or if the ask was "follow me on Twitter," that would be a different matter, since there's clearly a personal gain.

Second, I want to caution on the turn it's taking right now; it could easily turn into a theological debate, which we discourage here. Please keep the Logos forums dedicated to help with Logos.

Finally, and maybe most importantly... I'm a bit disappointed by the general tone of this thread. Even though there was a caution early on about Christians "fighting like cats and dogs," the resulting discussion was less than charitable.
I don't think Wilson was wrong for making the post.
I don't think Alberto was wrong for attempting to maintain the guidelines in good faith.
I really don't think the tit-for-tat exchange over whether anyone did anything wrong was helpful for anyone.

IMO, the most important guideline, and the hardest to keep, is #3:
