I don't want to find "son of" as in "Joshua, the son of Nun" (where Joshua is literally Nun's son), but phrases like "Sons of Thunder" (Mark 3:17) or "Son of Destruction" (John 17:12), where "son of" indicates a title.

You could try son WITHIN <Sense = person (category)>

There may be a few false positives but I think it is close to what you are looking for.

Note that some translations don't have "son" in John 17:12 so if you are using one of those you are probably best searching for the underlying Greek term.

Does this help at all?

It sure does, Graham, thanks! It doesn't bring any OT references, but I'm preparing a sermon, not doing a research project, so I just need a few examples.

Thanks again!

I used the Bible Browser and also found found Luke 19:9, "son of Abraham" and Romans 8:19, "the sons of God"

I'm not sure if I can help with the query, but my favorite is 1 Sam 20:30.

As it turns out, most familial terms in the OT are not "literal."

“The interaction between kinship and covenant creates differences between the meanings of terms like ‘father,’ ‘mother,’ ‘son,’ ‘daughter,’ ‘brother,’ ‘sister,’ ‘uncle,’ or ‘nephew’ in the Bible, and the way we use these titles in everyday speech. In the Bible, their connotations are often more legal than biological. They identify a variety of people besides blood relatives.”

Search can be expanded: (using a custom series for Original Language resources that have Tagging)

<Sense person (category)> OR (<Sense child> BEFORE 0-1 WORDS (<Sense supernatural entity> OR <Sense slave> OR <Sense traveler> OR <Sense perverse>))
