Morning, I was looking to buy the original The New American Bible and couldn't find it. I know some people have it, but all I see available now is the revised edition (NABRE), which I already own. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks
It was pulled because of the release of the NABRE. If you try to buy the original as a physical copy from USCCB Publications, you'll find the NABRE instead. ( http://store.usccb.org/searchresults.asp?Search=%22new+american+bible%22&Submit=Submit )
"The saints are the true interpreters of Holy Scripture. The meaning of a given passage of the Bible becomes most intelligible in those human beings who have been totally transfixed by it and have lived it out." - Pope Benedict XVI
I'm (obviously) not an expert on NAB>NABRE, but I read NABRE updated the OT, but not the NT (maybe at the time). Looking now at NAB>NABRE, the OT definitely changed its mind ... you don't have to look far. The NT looks the same, so if changes, harder to find (same major notes, though app.logos.com couldn't pull NABRE's special notes ... didn't try app.verbum.com since it doesn't know Denise).
"God will save his fallen angels and their broken wings He'll mend."
Hi Denise, unfortunately even the NT was drastically changed. Look at the original on Mattew 7:13-14: Only NAB clearly reflects the exclamatory form: “But how narrow is the gate … how rough the road … how few there are!” Can you sell me your copy? I know you have it from another post! haha
SineNomine, there must be some other explanation, for if this were true we would have only the latest versions of every Bible. Unless you meant the publisher and copyright owners decided to sell only their latest release, but even that would be weird... hmm

Oh, I don't know. Try to buy the 1984 NIV

Markus Dasilva:even the NT was drastically changed.
The NAB has been released in 4 editions, with copyrights of: 1970, 1986, 1991, 2010.
The New Testament was completely revised for the 1986 edition. To the best of my knowledge, the 1970 NT has never been available electronically, and the chances of anyone producing it while the copyright is active is pretty much zilch. Sorry.
In 1991, the Psalms were revised. In 2010, the entire Old Testament was revised, including another revision of the Psalms. The 2010 revision is the one marketed as NABRE.
The Logos edition prior to the publication of the NABRE was the 1991 NAB with revised New Testament and Psalms. That is no longer available for sale since the NABRE was published, as SineNomine explained.
Interestingly, the Wordsearch edition of the NAB was the 1986 revision, which looks like it is going to be reproduced as a Logos resource for migrated WS users who had it.
Markus Dasilva:Can you sell me your copy? I know you have it from another post! haha
Marcus, I don't sell Bibles (smiling). Maybe not a best answer for you, but if WS had an NAB, maybe FL will move it over? If no WS version, or if not move over, then $20 (the transfer fee).
Headache'y but I don't know how I got it (FL limits transfers of a single copy, if part of a package). I'm pretty sure it's a single, since Libby likes it.
If you don't succeed in purchasing an NAB (from the WS transfer?), then come back here (January or so?).
I agree, the NABRE changes seem arbitrary-ish.
Denise, based on what John Gillis said above on his very instructive post, can you paste your NAB version of Matthew 7:13-14? Thanks.

.That is how it is in the copy that I have had licensed since 2002.... To me it looks the same as NABRE.

Oh, that's precious and so true: "How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few." The 1996 copyright confirms what John Gillis said. I'm checking if other Bible software still has the original NAB
Was happy to find out that I was focusing too much on verse 13 and didn’t realize that it was the 14 that the NAB translated “οτι” as “how” in “οτι στενη η πυλη”. Checking further, the Lord showed me and now I can see that the NABRE, D-R and even the ISV also translated as “how”. Which I think is exactly what the Lord intended to say in Aramaic and Matthew translated to Greek: “it is much too narrow, almost impossible to go through”. You can feel this same sense when reading St. John’s of The Cross’s Ascent of Mount Carmel. Thanks
Just info, the earlier Libronix yellow-cover NAB is as above.
I have both. They both use the 1986 NT:
NAB:
13 † “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many.14 How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.
Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Board of Trustees, Catholic Church. National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and United States Catholic Conference. Administrative Board, The New American Bible: Translated from the Original Languages with Critical Use of All the Ancient Sources and the Revised New Testament (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, 1996), Mt 7:13–14.
NABRE:
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. 14 How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.
New American Bible, Revised Edition (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), Mt 7:13–14.
If you wanted to compare the OT, it might be different.
