Controlling the window where books from the Library open in

Hi all:

When I open a new book from the library (like a commentary or dictionary, etc.) it opens in the same window pane that my bibles are in (on the right side). I would like for the default open location to be on the left side where the Passage guide is located.

Currently I know how to drag and move the books from the right side over to the left side but would love to find a better way and have the newly opened books simply open on the left window pane.

Any ideas?

If you set up 2 panes so that the right pane is your Bible and your Library and the left pane is empty, when you click on the Library tab and click on a resource it will always open in the other pane, no matter how many resources you click on. That way you only have to click back and forth between Bible and Library windows in the one pane. Did my explanation make sense?.

Where does it open - in the same pane you are clicking from? Be sure to have a 2-pane setup, vertical (is what I do, other setups may likely work too).

EDIT: I also start from a previously saved two-pane setup. Maybe that matters.

Even when I have two panes open, one with a Bible and one with a commentary, I go to the library, open up a new Bible it opened up on the pane where the commentary is located.

Mine is always hit and miss, too. Any resource may randomly open in any pane no matter what i do. Even if i make sure a certain pane is active before going to the library, the resource (of any type) may open in a different pane, no rhyme or reason.

Logos relies on a "secret sauce" to determine which pane resources go into. I'm pretty certain it tries to group similar resources together but I haven't figured out what to expect and there isn't a way to customize Logos' behavior in this regard.

When you say go to the Library do you mean you click on the Library icon and then open a resource from there? That's your problem - it has two free panes to open a resource in. Instead, click on the Library/book icon, and keeping the left button down DRAG it to whichever pane you want the resource window to open in. Let up the button and it will have your library in a window in say the right pane. For me, once you do that, any clicks on resources in the library window open in the left-most pane - every time.

I'm not sure of that. I have a layout with 6 panels. An open Note File is in the top middle, but if I open another Note File, it usually opens on top of my GNT in the top left panel. I can sometimes open in another panel, but I don't think it has ever opened in the panel with the open Note File.

The recipe for the "secret sauce" is mysterious in the Biblical sense of mystery—it cannot be discerned, it must be revealed from Bellingham. [8-|]

That has been my experience too. I generally just drag the resource to the window in which I want it to appear.

I hope the recipe someday gets stabilized to work the way most of us expect it to.

As I posted earlier, mine does, in the simple example (2 panels, click resources in one panel, they always open in the other panel).

This is something that I hope ~eventually~ will not only be predictable, but will be user-configurable.

In addition, I would like the way that the My Library button works to be user-configurable, too - I personally want My Library to open up in a panel ("open in a new tab"), not as a popup that disappears after used (the current default), and not as a floating window. (I know that one can do all of these things with "fussing", but I think that the user should be able to decide the default one-click behavior for himself/herself.)

Me too!!!

(Its the unpredictable stuff I dislike. I want complete control, or known results. Even if the results are not ideal - at least we would know what would happen. Logos4 is way too complex now, to attempt to run with a Program Options page of 8 settings, and use Secret Sauce for all the rest. More options please!)

If you have several panes on your layout and you use the library in the drop down mode, Logos will assign whatever resource you open to a pane with the same type classification in the library, if one is there. What I mean by types is what you see if you open your library and click type on the heading. If you have your library in a tab it will open the resource in a different pane according to the same rule if that type is available. There may be more to the "secret sauce", but perhaps this helps . It would be nice if we had more control over this, but I believe this is how it currently works. Perhaps some long term users have additional insight.

Notice in my post above that this is not necessarily true. It does not happen in my layouts with Note Files, but then, they are not opened from the Library window.

Yes, notes or any file will open on the left or upper left, better yet, if given a choice. Tools from the drop down menu, if on the left will open on the left, if on the right, will open on the right and Biblical people, places and things will open in a floating window. At least that has been my experience.

Perhaps some long term users have additional insight.

When I open from the Command box I just pray[:)] I have two panes so it is a 50-50 proposition except when i open a second resource immediately after the first eg. two commentaries open in different panes.
