New tutorial video: Layouts

Here's a new unofficial tutorial video for you, on Layouts. In this video we look at layouts: saving layouts so we can come back to
them later, linking resources so that when one scrolls the other
scrolls, changing where hyperlinks open, changing the text size in one
or all resources, using reading view or floating windows to maximise
your reading experience, and finally some power tips that you can use to
create your own layouts.

Before you press play below, make sure the HD icon is 'blue' (click it if it's not). After you click
play, the four little arrows to the right of 'HD' will take you into
full screen mode. If you prefer you can download the video as a .MOV (Quicktime) file.

Mark, this was a very detailed and useful video, thanks. I enjoyed watching it in HD. You've probably been over this 100 times, but which keyboard do you use? Given that it sounds like you're hitting bricks together, I'm guessing it's the good old IBM M.

I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. I think Rosie told me the answer to this ages ago, but I've forgotten. I want to know how to open new resources in the same tab instead of them all opening in new tabs, which very quickly becomes unwieldy. Thanks.

but which keyboard do you use

I use a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, which has a very solid feel. On my other machine I use the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 which has a slightly softer feel: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2005/09/keyboarding-microsoft-natural-ergonomic-4000.html

I want to know how to open new resources in the same tab instead of them all opening in new tabs, which very quickly becomes unwieldy.

Parallel resources is the answer here (it's my next video). It allows you to open similar resources to the current reference in the current tab. There's no other way, which means you can't open a dissimilar resource in the current tab (e.g. you couldn't replace a commentary with a dictionary).

Thanks Mark. I've used nothing but Microsoft Natural keyboards over the last fourteen years, and none of them sound remotely like yours. Yours doesn't sound like a membrane keyboard, it sounds exactly like a buckling spring keyboard.

I'm familiar with parallel resources, but that's not actually what I want. I'm not talking about opening similar resources to the current resources in the current tab. I'm talking about the fact that every time I click on a resource in a set of search results, it opens in a new tab. I would like to open resources in search results in the same tab. It would be unfortunate if this isn't possible.

Outstanding!  Not just for setting up layouts, but also for opening and manipulating resources.  Thanks, Mark.

I am still enjoying all your videos Mark, thanks !  I always learn from them, and I like that they are "bite sized" portions. Sometimes it's hard to make the time to invest in watching a real long video despite my best intentions!

It isn't possible, I'm afraid. But you can close all the resources in a panel by right-clicking on the tab, so it's pretty easy to close them down once it gets excessive.
