I have noticed just recently that some of my note entries (icons) are duplicated.  One next to another.  However, the actual note is not duplicated.  I'm not sure when this showed up, and it doesn't affect all of my note icons.  There are many that have only one icon and not two.  Here's what it looks like:

Is this a known bug?  What could this be due to? Can it be corrected?  Thanks much.

Have you double clicked on each note icon? these may be in different note files.

EDIT: you also could use the Visual Filter Menu to turn ON/OFF different notes while watching the icon in your Bible to see which note file turns ON/OFF each icon.

I tried the clicking on each of the note icons and they point to the same note file and the same note.

I tried turning off the note filter pertaining to the book and both icons disappear.  So that isn't it.

Thanks.

Bruce,

I'm having the same problem except mine is now up to four icons for the same reference. Have you found out what's causing this.

This reminds me of a bug that appeared many months ago... I wonder if it has recurred.

Just guessing here, but see if either of these apply.

I think this may occur if you have a note open on two computers and change something on both. At least I had a similar issue once (I think).

Or, it could be an issue with importing from Libronix - have you imported the same notefile more than once?

The actual note is duplicated, unfortunately. (Click the first icon, then the second, and look at the position of the scroll thumb in the vertical scroll bar in the Notes window; you'll see that it changes position, indicating that these are two different notes.)

This can be caused by editing the same note file concurrently on two different machines before Logos 4 has finished syncing the changes. The only solution (right now) is to identify the duplicated notes and manually delete one of the duplicates when you find them. Note that it is very important to let Logos 4 finish syncing the delete before switching computers, to stop the problem getting even worse.

We plan to upgrade the notes sync to eliminate this problem in a future version of the application, but I don't have an estimate for when that will be ready.

Thanks very much for your help. I see now that it seems to be two different files. (Is that what you are saying?)
I only use Logos on one computer.  So I'm still puzzled on how this could have occurred.  It's really all over the place.  Not just one book of the bible, so it could take some time to correct manually.

So the question I have, is there an associated note file that I could examine/edit/delete?  I know this is tricky, but I'm a system support engineer by trade and deal with software, and the associated problems that are caused by either bugs or user issues. (I specialize mostly in Linux.  I wish there was a Fedora/Linux version of Logos.  That would be great!)

Thanks very much for everyones help.  Please have a Merry Christmas!

This can still happen if you edit a note and close Logos, or 'sleep' or 'hibernate' the computer before the syncing is complete. Could that be what's happening here?

Unlike L3, Logos4 notes can't be edited outside of the program (and it's not recommended to edit L3 notes outside of L3!). If you navigate to C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents\[random string]\Documents\Notes you'll see only two files there notes.db and notes.db-journal. If you open notes.db in Notepad, you'll see some of the issues here (don't edit the notes in Notepad, as that could have serious and undocumented consequences!). All the note files from L4 are stored in one file on the HDD.

When I have seen this happen, I've simply looked at the multiple iterations of the note, decided which one I wanted to keep and deleted the others. Then I make sure syncing is finished before closing the program (and/or closing/sleeping my laptop).

EDIT: added warning about editing L3 notes outside of L3, and made some formatting changes to improve readability.

Do both notes appear in a different Bible version (e.g. try KJV ...)?

If not, could it ill be because one note was added using selection rather then reference in the right click menu and is associated with NKJV (looking at your screen shot)?

Richard,

Regarding you statement about sleeping/hibernating, you are right on the money, I do sleep my laptop.  When it’s time to go to work I shut the lid and leave.  I rarely shutdown the laptop.  This could be the issue with the synchronizing.

Jonathan,

I have noticed the difference also.  I wondered why some were duplicated and others not.  However, I almost never right click and paste.  I copy the verse or selected text and paste.

I do think it’s due to shutting the lid/sleeping the laptop while a synchronization is in progress.  Is there a way to change this, other than my having to shutdown my laptop everytime?  It seems to me that this could be programmed into the sync. (I’m speaking as an IT professional.)  But whatever Logos decides I love the program, and am very satisfied over all.

Sleeping the laptop is okay. Just make sure that it's finished syncing first. Hover the mouse cursor over the sync arrows and wait for the message "syncing complete, all items are up to date" (or something like that), before closing the lid.

You may want to shut down Logos each time too (at least I do).

I'm wondering if we have "Notes Gone Wild" or something! I always wait till the computer finishs doing its sync. I never have my desktop and laptop open at the same time, yet, duplications are rampant!

I spend the Thanksgiving (long) weekend deleting ALL duplicates from Gen-Rev! The note file was clean with single entries only. Now, the first of Jan and it's "Notes Gone Wild" again . . . I'm a heavy note user for links to Journal Articles, externally located PDFs and Word documents, etc. Creating notes is very much part of work in L4 (as it was in L3) . . . so, any thoughts on how to stop this ongoing duplication?

Jerry,

I thought I had a problem, but it's nothing compared to yours!  I'm so sorry.  I don't have time to do them all at once, but am slowly chopping them down bit by bit.
This does seem like a big problem.  I have been closing Logos 4 every time now.  I will keep an eye out for any that return.

Yeah - think THAT's bad? Try this - Been deleting hundreds for months. I literally have 1000's of these. These are not even the worst. No help to date. Only that they are "working on it". I understand they are swamped and this isn't high priority. In time, I'm sure. But it is a very very bad nuisance and slows my machines considerably. I cannot let the program sync since syncing is what sends the duplication process skyrocketing. If anyone has any kind of help - let us know!

I call for note reform!  I dream of a day when Logos note organization functions like gmail labels!

I don't use notes much, because I feel like they're clunky and disconnected, and sometimes I just want to make a generic note on the page that I'm looking at (like I would on a page in my Bible) without me feeling like it has to fit into a "category" and be stored off in some detached, unorganized list.  I would like to just click on the note icon, and have it pop up as a bubble, right there on the sheet that I'm looking at.   And indeed, that is the only place that it is stored!  (As far as I ,the user, am concerned)

If it happens to fit into a "category" of notes I can apply a label to it: "Notes on creation."  If it happens to fit into multiple categories, I can apply multiple labels to it: "Notes on Creation," "The Sabbath," and later I can click on one of those label categories and it will still pull up every note associated with it...

There...I've tossed my pebble into the ocean :-)

Don't mean to complain though.  Using Logos really is a blessing and I appreciate everything the Logos team has accomplished so far!  Thank you guys!

We added a "remove duplicate notes" command to 4.2a SR-3 today.

First, type "update now" in the command box to check for updates and download the latest release. Once it has installed, enter "remove duplicate notes" in the command box, and you should see icons for exact duplicates disappear. (If you have edited some of the notes so that they're not exact duplicates, we'll leave them in place so that we don't delete your changes. You will have to consolidate the changes manually.)

Please let us know if/how well this works for you.

Bradley,

Thanks for all your hard work on this.  However, I'm afraid it didn't solve the problem.  I followed your instructions and got the latest update.  I have Logos 4.2a SR-3 (4.21.5.0932).  I then typed on the command line, "Remove Duplicate Notes."

When I checked the dups are still there in my case.  Here's a screen print:

The only difference is you will notice is that in the top picture there is the added text "Exodus 4:13 (NKJV)"
I think the reason this exists is because a lot of my notes were imported from Libronix 3.  So many are like this.
This is probably not fixable and I understand.  But God bless you for trying.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know.
