Some PBB Bibles for you to play around with

A few years ago I wrote a script that converted various public domain Bibles into a MySQL database. Today, I wrote a script which converted them from MySQL into Logos PBB format. Most of them crash the compiler, but the documents below compiled successfully for me in Logos. (Although not all the Bibles are in English, I'm afraid all the book names are in English.)

Apart from adding links and milestones, no formatting has been added at all. They'd need tidying up to be useful. But you might like to play around with them, and at least it demonstrates how Bible links and Bible milestones work. I'll add more Bibles to this messages/thread as I test them.

    Thanks Mark.

I'll wait for a more mature version of PBB because a simple one page "Note" won't compile consistently with milestones and references.

The files above should compile without any problems for you. I've posted elsewhere of a work-around to ensure milestones work as advertised.

Brilliant. I was able to build my Notes document and get it Prioritised and recognised in PG Commentaries!

Thank you Mark for that testing files.

Just one note. In Beta 8 the Milestones worked for me (headings created in non-English Word didn't). Now in Beta 9 it is the opposite. Headings work properly (thank you Logos!) but I have the old problem back, the milestones are not processed correctly. Many of them, however it looks random, I haven't found any pattern in it. Any ideas?

EDIT: P.S. I tried to compile your Biblia Gdańska file and it also missed quite a number of milestones.

    Hi Mark,

I just compiled the Geneva Bible, it works perfectly thanks.

The strange thing is that since beta 8 when I have tried to compile something of my own it crashes logos, this did not happen when the Pbb was first installed, I compiled a few items and they worked fine but now as I said while trying to recompile and add some more items logos keeps crashing, so I thought that I would try one of your files to see what happens and it worked great, I have already sent logos my logs and one of the source files and I know they are working on it, but have you any ideas why this working using one of your files but is not working on my files ?

    Blessings

    Robert

Mark Barnes posted the Geneva Bible docx file - is there more the one version of that Bible?  Bible text does not match what I see else where.

RGP, are all your Bible milestones recognized properly? Mine are not. I did not change Mark's docx file, I just used it. (I used Polish Bible for the test).

(you can check unrecognized milestones easily when you push CTRL+F and write @ sign to the search field. It will show you if all milestones are OK. You shouldn't see any @ signs found).

EDIT:  I tried now the Geneva Bible and it works fine. Is the problem only with the non-English Bibles?

Not very helpfully, my document includes the notes within the text, as footnotes weren't supported in PBBs at the time.

I tried Czech Bible Kralická and it works just fine. So the problem apparently is just with Bible Milestones recognition in the Polish Biblia Gdańska.

P.S. The same problem I found in all of my Polish and Czech Bibles I created as PBBs.

    Hi Bohuslav,

what I meant was that the actual file compiled properly, when I have attempted to do this (complie) with my own files they continue to crash logos, sorry for any confusion ! but as far as I can see it is only the notes that come with the Geneva Bible that are displaying.

    Polska Biblia Gdańska

I just wanted you to know the Bible text is not complete. In Chronicles there are parts messed up and missing. I will add correct file later.

    EDITED:

I just must to find a proper Bible Mapping for PBG. Regular one [[@Bible:... is not working properly. It differs on too many places.

Mark, do you have any automated method for verse mapping when they differ form the @Bible mapping (which according to Bradley should be NRSV)?

I noticed you changed the verses mapping in many places in the docx of Biblia Gdańska. Or did you do that manually?

Do you have updated files for these? [I would like the Geneva Bible but others may want others and as we now can do it ourselves looking over your work will get us started]

OK, here is updated Polish Biblia Gdańska. I repaired missing text and made Bible text as a Bible field for searching as a regular Bible. Should work well.

Here is the file: Polska Biblia Gdańska

    RE: Polish Biblia Gdańska
Build was successful but I noted that only core one was in use while doing the build.
Have no clue what I will do with that resource but thanks for the “Bible template” file [I have plans for that]

EDIT: Bohuslav Wojnar provided the file for Polish Biblia Gdańska.  I have a Bible that is not in logos in PDF format.  I am replacing the docx text with the text from the PDF.  Have done Just Matt 1 and 2.  And that is a LOT of work.  But it has shown me what is involved.  Thanks for all of the effort that all that have provided [and will provide] PBs have done.

David, to do it the way you try is really a lot of work and I can't imagine you would do whole Bible like this.

The method I use is very simple: I try to get a text of the Bible with the reference (like Gen 1:1) at the beginning of each verse. Then it is just a simple FIND and REPLACE work in a few steps and you have the file you see with Biblia Gdańska. Pdf files are very difficult to go with because of all the formating info it gets into the docx file.

if its on the WWW David post a link, without looking at PDF cant offer much help...

However if you can get it output in plain text with 1 verse per line in:

BOOK CH:VS TEXT  format, then  I have a import tool, and will be happy to run it though for you.

    Hello Bohuslav,

I am not good in formulas, can you give me these to change Gen 1:1 in form required by PBB?

Or is there a place to look this up? I have some Dutch Bibles here I want to convert for personal use :-)

    Hans

P.S. Of is er een Nederlander die al een bewerkte tekst heeft? Zeer aanbevolen! (= Dutch)

Has LOTS of non Bible text included such as ANNOTATIONS and comments on BOTH sides of the Bible text
and is under copyright as of 1998 or so[I will not be able to pass it around]
Getting it in to BOOK CH:VS TEXT  format is almost as difficult as copy paste each verse [but I want it - even if I need to do it one chapter at a time]

I've found another source that is not under copyright and have most of the book of Genesis done as a test. Unfortunately, it's not my highest priority at the moment but if Logos doesn't do the notes, I will get around to it.

    Hello Hans,

All the syntax needed for the PBB building is in
the help file under Personal Books heading. Also you can find a lot of
help in Wiki. The formulas to make a needed syntax from the reference
depends on the tool you use. In MS Word it is one way and you can see
some help in the FIND and REPLACE tool under advanced options (or how it
is called, I use Czech Office).

Most changes I usually do by
saving document as HTML and use PSPad editor to do it. The formula for
changing a simple reference to the needed syntax would be:
    <p>([a-zA-Z123]+ \d+:(\d+)) replaced with
<p>[[@Bible:$1]]$2   if the reference starts with a simple
paragraph beginning. This way you can also create Bible books devisions
and also chapters, just before any reference 1:1 you add the name of the
book taken automatically from the reference and also chapter taken from
each reference \d+:1 (each first verse starts a new chapter obviously.)

I think ideal would be to learn how to do all this changes directly in MS Word. It has a lot of options in the FIND and REPLACE tool. The best would be to use makros in MS Word. If somebody would make those, it can be of great help.

If I ever get to the ""notes"" I think I will put them in a Commentary [some of the study Bibles are split into two files] [But my current plans are to do just the Bible text chapters as I need them in my personal study - Was using copy from the PDF and paste into Word - Now do into PB and save for any latter use - (that is don't wait for me)]  [And this text does not seem to be on anyones 'high priority' list]      [Re Copyrights - the PDF I found on the web may not have permission to be there - the copyright holder was selling it and it looks like others just posted it - have not had contact with the copyright holder in two years or so]      And thanks to all that have posted sample docx files.  They have gotten others up and creeping. [the words used are normally up and running but at the speed we are going creeping is a better fit]

Mark, can Bibles with alternate versification be produced in their native versification instead of using a workaround to modify or 'squeeze' the texts into a standard 'English' (KJV) versification? In particular, can deutercanonical context be included?  If so, what versification schemes are supported?

Before Mark answers your questions I would suggest you try to use [[@BibleNAB:Genesis 1:1]] mapping. I used it for my Bible with the deuterocanonical books and it worked quite well. I had to do some adjustments though in a few places. Logos has about 80 mapping systems. It would be great if we can get access to that information. I just experiment till I get desired results. In any Bible when you right click any word and go to Reference and use Search this Resource command, you will see the Bible mapping version in the search line:

Bohuslav, thanks for that info.  If there are about 80 mapping systems, there may well be one that will come close to what I need.  I'd rather wait to see a comparison of the details of these mappings, though, before experimenting, as the main goal of my project (www.anbioblanaofa.org) is already completed and I don't have much time to work on additional formats (Logos) at present.

    I agree.

It would be really great if we were able to produce PBB Bibles (with publisher's permission, or from public domain), and share them.  I wonder if this is something that Logos has envisioned when preparing the PBB feature, or whether it is something that has been found to be possible by users?  In any case, it would be great to have some guidance that we could use, even if PBB was/is not directly or originally intended for this purpose.

Who should we contact to request more information?  Or is it likely that someone from Logos pick up on this thread and reply?
