Just downloaded Logos [edit]4.3 Beta 8 and saw the personal book function so I tried creating my own book.  I am currently a missionary in Cambodia and so the first book I tried to import was one in Khmer (UTF-8).  Logos is unable to display Khmer Unicode correctly.

Here is the first page in Word: http://www.actioncambodia.org/word-khmer.jpg

And here is the first page in Logos: http://www.actioncambodia.org/logos-khmer.jpg

Not sure if books can be shared, but I think this is the personal book file: http://www.actioncambodia.org/Khmer-Greek-Grammar-Personal-Book-Test.zip

I would be happy to help in any way I can to help Logos be compatible with Khmer Unicode.

Thanks,

Nathan

Nathan,

I'll let the techs review this; but I'm glad you're trying this.

I'm sure they'll catch it, but in the future keep in mind that since this is a beta, it will be seen faster in the beta forum:  PC Beta - Logos Bible Software Forums http://community.logos.com/forums/78.aspx

Just downloaded Logos 4.0c Beta 4
are you sure? I thought it must be 4.3 Beta 8. That said, you may realize there is a Beta forum here http://community.logos.com/forums/78.aspx  where the PBB issues are shared and which is closely monitored by Logos employees (maybe they will move the thread over there).

I think the pbb books can't be shared, but if you share are portion of the book (or a PD book), others may try to build a PBB from it. On the other hand - I'm not on beta myself, just an interested bystander in the beta forum, so don't trust my words alone - there seem to be a number of font issues as well as internationalization issues with the current version of PBB - maybe this gets better next Tuesday or the week after.... with new beta releases.

Thanks Mick - yes it is 4.3 Beta 8, I copied and pasted the wrong one.

I didn't see the Beta forum - if someone can move this there that would be great.

Thanks,

Nathan

Also, I'll just add this here as well, since it relates to Khmer Unicode.

I've been trying to get the Cambodian Bible Society to release an electronic version of their Bible, but they have had concerns about copyright.  I noticed the Thai Holy Bible is available http://www.logos.com/product/6720/thai-holy-bible - if this issue with Khmer Unicode can be worked out, would Logos be a possible platform for the Khmer Bible?  If so, can someone contact me with details of the process so that I can give an educated presentation to the Cambodian Bible Society?  I think they would be impressed by Logos, as well as feel that their copyright would be upheld.

Thanks,

Nathan

Bill Nienhuis is the person to contact (bill@logos.com).

ogos is unable to display Khmer Unicode correctly.

This looks like a font issue to me. If that's the case, Logos are already aware of font problems with PBBs. Whether Logos will ever allow you to embed fonts in PBBs is another question though, so even if they fix the problem it might require other people to have the font installed on their computer.

I agree.  I've added a link to this forum post for this particular font to the existing case.

Thanks Mark and Tonya,

As far as the font issue - I agree that a font would most likely need to be embedded - but currently Logos is unable to correctly display any Khmer Unicode font (I tried them all, about 50 fonts) by changing the default Logos font in preferences).  So I think it is both/and - a font needs to be embedded, as well as adding Khmer Unicode compatibility to font rendering engine in the Logos program.

Khmer Unicode works in Windows Vista/7 in notepad, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, and many other programs, but there still are quite a few programs out there that do not support it (Like QuarkXpress).

Thanks again - I hope this issue can be worked out!

The PBB currently has a bug which displays all unicode characters (including Greek and Hebrew) in the wrong font. (It seems to choose Arial unicode regardless of what is set in preferences or in the resource.)

Hmm, maybe they fixed that bug (or Khmer Unicode is weird) - because I can change the font to a Khmer Unicode font as demonstrated below:

First Khmer Unicode Font: http://www.actioncambodia.org/logos-khmer.jpg

Second Khmer Unicode Font: http://www.actioncambodia.org/khmer-font-logo.jpg

The way the font is looking is how programs that cannot take Khmer Unicode normally look (with the plus signs below letters etc.).  Logos is very close to being compatible with Khmer Unicode because at least I can see the font (a program that does not allow UTF-8 will just have boxes or question marks).

Thanks,

Nathan

Comparing these two images really help to see the problem:

It looks as though characters are getting transposed. So you're right - it is more than a font issue.

Here's a Microsoft Word file with some Khmer Unicode along with some Greek for testing purposes in case it would be helpful:

I wonder if this is related to my disappearing Chinese ... I get some space but not even boxes. My Sogdian also was a complete failure.

Thomas,

Have the techs made any progress with this problem that you know of? I know several other missionaries in Cambodia (myself included) that are very anxious to get the Khmer Bible in Logos and personal docs is the only way so far, but the font problem prevents even that.

Thank you,

Michael

Michael,

I'm not privy (unfortunately) to the tech's progress logs.  I hope they respond to you here though.

Has anyone been able to get a Khmer Bible into Logos yet, or any other Bible program? I've also checked with Bibleworks, and they are currently unable to support it because Khmer (unlike Thai) doesn't have a Windows Code Page.
