I am trying to find out all of the ways I can search Logos. I am familiar with Accordance where the search features are about as good as they get, but I'm hoping Logos can match it.

Can anyone help me to do the following:

1. Generate vocabulary lists by word frequency

2. Compare texts (eg all the words in Ignatius to the Romans that don't occur in the Greek New Testament. In Accordance you can not only do this, but you can filter it by word frequency. A friend of mine just compiled a list in Acc. of all the words in the Apostolic Fathers that occur 5x or less in the GNT!)

Any help you can give is appreciated. I'm just learning my way around Logos, but I plan on squeezing every last drop out of the search features.

Thanks!

You indicate familiarity with Accordance which would seem to indicate that you have or have had a MAC yet you are posting this in the Logos 4 Windows forum.  Which is it -- MAC or Windows?  Things aren't altogether the same on the two platforms so it's sometimes important to know which you have.

Hi Refe - and welcome to the forums

Refe:
1. Generate vocabulary lists by word frequency

This will be best done using the Vocabulary List feature - but this is currently unavailable and we don't know when it will be released. A discussion of various ways of achieving this now can be found at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/27606.aspx

I don't know how you would do this in Logos

General information about searching in Logos can be found on the wiki at - for example - http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELPhttp://wiki.logos.com/Basic_Searchhttp://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help,

I don't know how this would be done either, but I wasn't sure that it couldn't be done.  It would be a nice feature allowing more concentration on words which are unfamiliar due to not being found in canonical texts.

The only thing I can think of doing is doing a search of the text (maybe using the Morph search suggested by Mark Barnes in the link I referenced above) and then export this (in analysis view) to an Excel spreadsheet.

You could do this for both texts and then construct a function in Excel that checked for words that were present in one list that were not present in the other.

Not saying it is easy, but I think it could be done!

I have both, which is why I've gone with Logos instead of Accordance - I can sync it to my Windows laptop and my desktop iMac. I appreciate you pointing out that there are some differences in Logos on each platform, though, I didn't realize that.

It's about 5 clicks in Accordance to do the comparison in Accordance. Hopefully this the kind of feature that will be included in the Vocabulary Lists they are working on.

There's an easy way to answer to the Ignatius question relative to the NT, but not using the search (NT analytical lexicon). But that wouldn't be a fair solution in the big 'search-off'.

Not excusing our favorite software from hopelessly loosing in the test of strength on this thread, but I always wonder what the trade-off is between 'easy to use' for day to day use, vs strength in unusual situations.

I know Halo Hound will amble over and bite me on the leg for even wondering about this.

That's definitely a Vocabulary List feature  i.e the difference between two lists; you can see this function in Passage Lists.

Comparing two passage lists is definitely a step closer to what I'm looking for, and looks like it will work great when I am just doing the New Testament. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to let me choose Lake or Lightfoot's Apostolic Father's texts... I also can't figure out a way to narrow down searches in Apostolic Father's to specific books or authors like you can in the NT. What am I missing?

Nothing.  Paraphrasing Walter Cronkite in his farewell statement when he retired, that's the way it is Tuesday, August 2, 2011.  ("Old anchormen, you see, don't fade away; they just keep coming back for more. And that's the way it is: Friday, March 6, 1981. I'll be away on assignment, and Dan Rather will be sitting in here for the next few years. Good night").  I would like that as well -- also for Philo, Josephus, Homer, Greek Pseudepigrapha, and anything similar I fail to mention.
