1. Carson - Pillar

2. Kostenberger - BECNT

Recently, I upgraded to Portfolio and got a lot more commentaries. I have yet to check those out, but may find some more favorites.

Raymond Brown iand Catena Aurea if it must be in Logos ...but it ought to be: The Explanation of the Gospel of John by Blessed Theophylact, Archbishop of Ochrid (hint, hint ... )

Logos4catholics Orthodox Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."

Carson is good.  He is very good.

Still I always look at Bernard in the International Critical Commentary set first.

And then after you have read everyone else, read Godet and Pink, and see what  you missed with the others.

I have been preaching through the Gospel of John for the past 3 years.  Here are the commentaries I've found most helpful:

Kostenberger (BECNT)

Morris (NICNT)

Ridderbos

Tenney's little book called, "John: The Gospel of Belief"

Boice

Sproul

Lloyd-Jones' studies in John 4 called, "Living Water" is particularly helpful.

I also found some good nuggets in NAC (Borchert).  He has some good insight into looking at the book as a whole and how parts relate to one another.

Word Bible Commentary and the Cornerstone Commentary for John are good.

Alright, my choices from # 1 and on:

1.  BECNT on John by Andreas J. Kostenberger.

2.  Pillar by DA Carson

3.  College Press NIV by Bryant and Krause

4.  NAC by Borcher AND

5.  Commentary on the NT use of the OT by Beale and Carson <~~This has been neglected when it comes to mentioning commentaries on the gospels or any other NT book.  Great how it connects NT passages with OT ones or possible allusions to them.

That's all folks!

DA

I almost forgot.

Marcus Dods is always worth reading.  He did John in the Expostor's Bible.  I used him a lot years ago when I was in the ministry.   Very good.
