Is there anyway to visually filter all the words spoken by YHWH, beginning from Gen 1:3?

To achieve the same effect as switching "Use Red Letter" on/off in Program Settings to mark the words of Christ in red, except that it's the words of YHWH now?

I don't think so.  Here is an option you can do.  This idea has been tossed around before.  If you could do it, it would be a drain on your computer while it loaded it up. This doesn't get every reference.  Click on to enlarge.

Hmmm ... Can see why it won't catch every reference. As well as why this may nevertheless be the next best workaround.

Thanks, Jerry.

You can filter His words if you love Hebrew and have Andersen-Forbes Analyzed Text. The filter can be divided into many types:

And the Bible Search query will look like:-

<AndersenForbesGenre = Divine Soliloquy>
<AndersenForbesGenre = Divine Oracle>
<AndersenForbesGenre = Divine Instruction>
<AndersenForbesGenre = Divine Blessing>
<AndersenForbesGenre = Divine Promise>

etc.

Thanks Dave! This *** REALLY *** takes things to the next level (for me, at least) !

Yes, I have AFAT, and managed to perform the search successfully. But it seems that this only works when searching the AFAT, not any other Bible. Trouble is I don't read Hebrew.

Is there anyway that I can search AFAT, and map the results (visual filter, etc.) to an English Bible, or even an interlinear? Thanks again.

You can construct a Passage List for each type of Divine speech but then you have to highlight the words using a Morph Search like:-

@N, @V, @R, @A, @P  etc

so it covers all parts of speech for the Hebrew morphology in a Reverse Interlinear. Use the Passage List instead of "All Passages".

Note that some words of a verse may not be divine speech.

OK ... Passage List done. Pretty neat. Thanks, Dave.

But is there any way to search for "all text enclosed within inverted commas" within the Passage List, instead of the Morph Search?

Jerry, this is a separate matter from the original post, but ...

I noticed from your screenshot that you have a "elo" superscripted beside every occurrence of the word "God". I presume that indicates "Elohim", and that you did that by way of visual filtering. (I'm guessing you have the other Divine Names of God superscripted accordingly as well).

I'm just learning how to use Visual Filters, and so far, I haven't seen superscripting as a formatting option in the Visual Filters. So, how did you do that?

Thanks.

Hi Theophilus.

Superscripts are a formatting option in highlights. The highlights are then used by the visual filter.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Graham, for the prompt answer. I'm not sure I understand, though.

I've just checked the highlighting options. They are exactly the same formatting options as visual filters. I don't find superscripting. Is this a new feature on beta versions only? Regret too that I also don't understand how "highlights are then used by the visual filter".

I don't need the answer instantly, but would really appreciate it if someone could give me some step-by-step instructions for visual filter newbies on how to do what Jerry did above with the superscript-formatted visual filters. Or point me to a wiki page that can help me do that. Thanks.

Hi Theophilus

Have a look at http://wiki.logos.com/Highlighting#Text_Effects. If you scroll down you will see how to create super scripts in highlights (and this isn't a new beta feature it is in the stable release).

Once you have created the highlight you can then use it in your visual filter.

http://wiki.logos.com/Custom_Highlighting$3a_Orig_Lang._$28for_Visual_Filters$29 shows an example of doing this.

Hope this helps

Graham

Whoa! Did this help?!?! This opened a whole new world for me!

I'll work through it and come back again if/when I encounter more difficulties. There's just so much to learn!

Thanks, Graham. You made my day!

Thankful for discussion that provided visual filter modification idea (change font color near some words):

Thanks, Jerry, Graham & Shining! You've been more than a great help. You've opened my eyes (and my Logos package) to a whole new way of marking up my text! Appreciate all the new ideas (many of which I will shamelessly copy!), and the help with how to implement them.

Thanks too, Dave, for you're help with the question in the original post, which we have since deviated from. Smile

Hey Theophilus and Dave,

Were either of you able to find a way to make the words of YHWY red? I'm new to visual filters and some of this post doesn't make sense to me. Dave, I'm not sure what screen you are in with that first screen shot on this thread. I have the ability to choose the Andersen Forbes for visual filters in Hebrew morph, is this the same screen you are in? It looks different than what I come up with in the visual filter tool. Can anyone go through this process with me step by step?

What I would like to do is create a filter with the words of God in the OT blue and words of the father in the NT blue.

My first post is a Syntax Search in the Hebrew - you may find that on your File menu depending on your base Library package. Construct that search as shown and then create a Passage List (under the Search menu). Then you can create a Visual Filter using a Morph Search that highlights the nouns, verbs, pronouns as per the codes in my following post  (@N, @V, @R etc) but you select your Passage List instead of All Passages. See http://wiki.logos.com/Visual_Filter for more information.

For Syntax Search see http://wiki.logos.com/Setting_up_a_Syntax_Search

Thank you Dave,

I have the Leaders Library so I don't have the syntax search ability. In order to get the syntax search function would I need to upgrade to the next base package, or is there a way to purchase the syntax tool on it's own?

You need to upgrade to Original Languages (OL) or Scholar's. See http://www.logos.com/comparison

Note that if you want to go further with Original Language studies it is best to go for Scholar's as OL is dead-end for upgrades (but see what the Upgrade button tells you).
