Wondering if anyone has come up with a comprehensive set of rules to create an Apologetics Collection? Thanks for any input.

Apologetic, apologetics, religions, mormon*, watchtower, worldview, athiest, "jehovah* witness*", evolution -apocrypha

Above is the string that I have been using. It includes cults as well.

thanks for sharing. For those who want to copy and paste your string into the collection rule box, I repeat it with "atheist" instead of "athiest":

Apologetic, apologetics, religions, mormon*, watchtower, worldview, atheist, "jehovah* witness*", evolution -apocrypha

Maybe it helps to include something like author:geisler into the string and manually exclude non-apologetic resources, to make sure that works like "Why I am a Christian" etc. are found.

Here is what I am currently using and this gets tweaked all the time.

subject:apologetics OR author:morey, author:geisler, author:schaeffer

And I have also added to Plus these Resources things I consider Apologetic like The Nature and Limits of Human Understanding.

Sometimes I tag several Apologetic resources and then just use mytag:whatever for the collection rule. This is probably my most used collection and the rules constantly are changing.

Thankful for discussion; changed Apologetics collection rule from Subject:Apologetics (16 resources) to:

Subject:(Apologeti,Ethics,Evangeli,Mormon,"Spiritual warfare",Witness) OR Title:(Faith,Manifesto,Wicket)

that has 77 resources.  For some resources, looked for unique word in title (e.g. couple by Charles Spurgeon).

Matthew Hamrick:
subject:apologetics OR author:morey, author:geisler, author:schaeffer

Equivalent rule is => subject:apologetics OR author:(morey,geisler,schaeffer)

Of course not all Geisler's works are apologetics. His General Introduction to the Bible being one of them. I think the easiest, maybe the fastest, and definitely most reliable way to do this to scan down through your library and tag the books you want to be in your apologetics collection. As new books come in tag them immediately. This way you never have to figure out what some collection rule means and then try to tweak it to do a better job. It should take less time to tag a book than to add it to the exceptions section of a dynamic collection rule, and certainly less time than modifying the rule. Keep a list of the words you have used as tags.

My Logos resource finally became truly useable when I learned tagging and setting up custom passage guides. When I have an exegetical question I can check out the options and their rational in many resources and come to a well informed conclusion in a very few minutes. To me Logos is first and foremost an exegetical research tool. The SIL exegetical summary series is a favorite of mine. I use it for other things too.

Rule exclusion can be => author:(morey, geisler, schaeffer) ANDNOT title:Introduction

Cited By tool includes mytag: collections (along with rating: , series and other collections).  Likewise search in a collection can be done using mytag:

Personally using a mix of mytag: and dynamic rules for collections.  If collection has many resources individually added, concur tagging is quicker.  For some collections, tagging is the only option (e.g. interlinear resources with Display button).

Initially tagging library can be time consuming (especially when dynamic rules using Logos metadata can quickly group many resources).

Now you just excluded Geisler's Introduction to Philosophy which you probably do want in your apologetics collection since it an apologetic approach to the subject.

I used similar things when doing my tagging to speed up the process. Once I had selectively tagged the books produced by library sorts, and these sorts of collections, I deleted the collection rule to prevent accidentally using one of them and running into anomalies such as illustrated above.

From my days in library science: there is a skill called "knowing the collection." A large part of a library employee's evaluation was on how well they "knew the collection."  One "learned the collection" by straightening the books on the shelves and and flipping through some of them each time. After a few years of this the employee could work the reference desk helping patrons find information they were not able to fine using the card catalog that was filled by "subject". Even with all the tools Logos provides you still have to "know the collection." Tagging helps one preserve one's "knowledge of the collection."

There is an old line that goes "you can't judge a books by it cover." All collection rules can do is look at the cover. (This line also applied to fancy dust jackets.)

There is no excuse for not opening every resource (a set of books maybe one resource) in one's Logos library, taking a look at it, and assigning it one or more tags from a carefully "controlled vocabulary." Until one has done at least one pass of this, one certainly does not "know one's collection." And therefore is certainly not making very good use of it. -- Sorry for the rant. Smile but having a large library is often a facade for having knowledge. We will not even mention understanding and wisdom.

Frank ... our library here in town organizes by applying 'rules' to the titles. Very similar to Logos' collection rules.

It seems to works pretty good, plus they don't have to write those funny little numbers onto the spine of each book (tagging).

And a side benefit is everybody's searching around for their books! Kind of a community event.

There's always some complainers ... 'Why can't they organize this library better??'.

You just never can escape the complainers.

Apologies: have not (yet) purchased => The Norman L. Geisler Apologetics Library (13 vols.) that includes Introduction to Philosophy.  If purchase sometime, would revisit my Apologetics Collection to see if new resources are included in rule:

Subject:(Apologeti,Ethics,Evangeli,Mormon,"Spiritual warfare",Witness) OR Title:(Faith,Manifesto,Wicket)

If all resources are not included, can modify rule with option to tag resource(s) and add mytag: to collection rule. Thankful can enter a word in Library that searches for word occurrence in resources, including gloss text, then can compare with collection for rule modification.  Likewise Thankful can search for items (e.g. pronoun) to find morphological tagging, then tag resource based on some content.

From my days in library science: there is a skill called "knowing the collection."

For commentaries, have spent some time to prioritize every series plus several individual volumes.  When reading a commentary, can click "+" to open another commentary containing that verse, right side is sorted by prioritization.  As learn more about commentary content, have option to modify prioritization.

Having a commentary (or two) in Top 5 Bibles allows right click option in a Bible verse so can click reference, then open a commentary for that verse.

Personally still living and learning; lots to read and ponder.  Thankful for FSD command; added shortcut for virtual bookshelf browsing.

I went through my library and tagged works for apologetics collection, but what is the rule to use to create the collection from the tags? I tried: tags:apologetics and variations of that, but no results at all. Thanks.

Thanks, Steve!         *smile*         You always come through for us, eh?!!!!                  Peace to you and Always Joy in the Lord!

Could you, please, or someone else if willing, please give me an example of how to use mytag:apologetics with some of other rules on this thread)  For some reason I am finding it a tad difficult.                                                                     John 15:5

First when you use mytag, you will have needed to Tag books in your Library first.

But to use one of the above rules along with your mytag, try the below in your Collection's rule box

(Apologetic, apologetics, religions, mormon*, watchtower, worldview, atheist, "jehovah* witness*", evolution -apocrypha) OR (mytag:apologetic)

Again you will need to have created tagged books in your Library tagged with apologetic.

EDIT: after trying the above rule (which i just copied from a post above) it did not work, but the one below works

((subject:Apologetic, apologetics, religions, mormon*, watchtower, worldview, atheist, "jehovah* witness*", evolution) OR mytag:apologetic) ANDNOT (subject:apocrypha)

Personally have a Bible Grid Favorites collection with mytag:BibleGrid rule so can compare few more Bibles than "Top 5 Bibles".  Greek Text Comparison collection includes mytag:BibleGrid as part of rule:

For search sample, showing mytag:BibleGrid can be used; same results as collection: Bible Grid Favorites (since same set of resources is searched).

Steve, it is simply to give credit when credit is due; and you've made that happen for so many of us in so many instances!                              And!                The PRAISE all goes to God, eh????          *smile*

That worked incredibly well, Steve.  It is superb!  I still have to remove a couple of books; however it even picked up on a few books that I might have overlooked!

...   am indeed a happy camper!           Just a final thanks!                                                   2 Corinthians 5:7

I appreciate your response; and I must say many of your posts have been highly stimulating and helped me to "think outside of the box," which is what we should be doing a lot more of!                                                                                             Galatians 5:13
