Edwin ... we're loosing faith in you. The last several entries by you on Hastings haven't mentioned the gospels! How am I ever going to get the match to my apostolic one??

Thanks for reminding everyone about it. It should be an no-brainer for anyone who has the Apostolic Dictionary and is ordering the 5 volume set

There's a good chance this resource could be sold for $12 as it doesn't look like we're going to need too many new bidders, or a few low bids increased to $12 to get the price down. We have nearly a full working week to get it there.  Regardless of whether this goes for $12 or $15, this is an awesome buy.

...and his Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels in 11th!

Why is the $15 price going up and up when we could being getting the price down to $12. The price would be fixed till Friday. Do only a few people get the concept of bidding?

Call me overly pessimistic, but while I would LOVE to get this for less than 15, I'm afraid that just about all the people who are comfortable with the Community Process thing have already bid.  It is the best seller on there.

Everybody, please prove me wrong by bidding before noon Logos time tomorrow!

With a little over 24 hrs left, this set would go to $12 for everyone, if those who bid $12 would change it to $15. It's very close.

Hm. From my understanding how CP adds up prices, this would raise the $15 to 120 or more %, but would leave the curve at $12 unchanged, as this point is the number of all these who bid $12 or more, multiplied by $12 and reflected as a percentage of the unknown 100% price limit. Thus when someone at $12 raises their bid, this will affect the higher price, but not the percentage at $12.

It's those who will miss this great deal because they are below $12 or not in at all, who could bring this down.

Those at $12 just run the chance to miss by mere $3, but if that's really the utter max they are prepared to pay, so be it.

As the $15 price is going up, so is the $12 going up.  I don't know what your concept of bidding is, but if it's more bidding at $12, those are totally useless to the process unless the $12 point gets to the 100% level.

Just to clarify:  As the $15 price is going up, so is the $12 going up is correct for new bidders that bid $15 now (or those updating from $9 or lower). They increase the $15 percentage point and (to a slightly smaller extent) the $12 percentage point.

more bidding at $12, those are totally useless to the process unless the $12 point gets to the 100% level. yep. they increase the $12 point a bit, but run the risk of missing the deal if CP closes at $15 nonetheless.

What is the advantage of this "Dictionary" over some of the more modern ones?

Dictionaries provide great reference info. Hastings provides 4500 pages and is available for only $15 though noon PST.

1 vol. editions would cost more than that and are briefer in their treatment of each subject and the number of subjects covered.

It has been a standard over the years.

It does not replace others, but adds to your current dictionaries.

Edwin,

Thanks for the reply. Please know that I do appreciate your reply and I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to be a good steward of God's resources. I have the same general question about all older resources. For example, Hastings v AYBD. If one didn't have AYBD would Hastings be a good substitute? If one has AYBD then it looks like their coverage compares as follows:

AYBD: 7200 pages, 6,000 entries.               Hasting: 4500 pages, 1,500 entries.

So, in this case would Hastings be a good addition to AYBD because although it only covers 1/4 of the entries it covers them in 3 times the detail?

Hope all this makes sense.

Adding to Edwin's comments, Hastings, although somewhat similar to Anchor, really has to be looked as an 'add-on'.  I have Encyclopaedia Biblica whose authors are similar to Hastings. I also have Anchor. But quite frankly, the earlier authors, as in Hastings, really bring extra perspectives and hard data to the party. I'm continueing to enjoy my Hastings Apostolic Dictionary for the same reason and look for its sister volumes for the gospel books.

But I'd not view Hastings as an alternative to Anchor or any other serious modern dictionary. There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then (mainly papyri and archaeology work).
