Purchasing L4 on DVD and downloading
Searching the forums are fairly difficult. I tried it for this question. Forgive me if someone has already asked. If I purchase L4 on DVD, will I still be able to download it if I chose to do so? I know the DVD will not have the latest updates. But I figure if I purchase the DVD, it will save lots of time downloading, and I am assured of a stable installation. Once that is done, I can then most likely get updates to get up to the latest edition. Is my thinking right or wrong?

Yup, After you've ordered the DVD your accounts page should have a link to the installer. This will download all of your books. (it takes a while to download and index and L4 is not really usable until this is done)

Depending on which collection you have, it can be a hefty download and might possibly chew up most or all of your ISP's monthly allowance. The Platinum download was about 9.5 GB. My ISP allows 30 GB during peak hours, so that's 1/3 of my download peak hours allowance in one go! Every ISP is different and it pays to check!

Cool, I didn't know you can do that. Can you please tell me where exactly should this link be?

Thanks, it seems my question is answered. I already tried the download route and it destroyed my computer. Still recovering from it. That is why I wish to go the DVD route. That should shorten my upgrade downloading. I have gold but will upgrade to Platinum. Then I am hoping that all other (or most other files I have) will be downloaded in the updating. Does that sound correct? I am aware of the issues that some are missing books.

Thanks, but are you sure I should be able to download if I ordered the DVD? Because I only see "View my unlocks" and the order summary/receipt for the DVD.

The servers don't know or care if you are getting a DVD. As long as your licenses are activated on your account (which should have happened when you ordered) L4 will try to download anything it can.
I had Logos 4 installed and indexed by the time the DVD showed up in the mail.

Thanks, I think I need to contact customer support.

Nic, please let me know what they say on this topic. I would agree with what has already been said because it makes sense. A DVD should only be something like a backup. The program should not need to be installed via DVD. But I would like to purchase the DVD...in order to quell the huge download.
Can someone tell me if LOGOS plans to update their DVDs that they send to people as they continue to progress in the development of L4?

Is there a "clickable" order # on your My order page?
It will take you to a receipt/order form.
I am just not sure if (having ordered the DVD) that you will then also find an "unlock" button.

I did this last monday (ordered the Platinum upgrade) and it didn't need an unlock button. There was the option to download a small installer program on the Order Summary page. Once I ran this It asked for my user information (login id and password for Logos.com) and proceeded to download. I was able to use the new version with all the new resources on my desktop by Monday evening. As a side note, I recieved my DVD in the mail Saturday and all the folders showed up as Hidden. Installed fine on my Laptop but just seemed odd.

Mark,
The answer to your question depends on how you are purchasing Logos 4.
If you are upgrading:
Your books are unlocked immediately after the order is processed. You can then download Logos 4 and it will start downloading and indexing your books (irrespective of the delivery method you choose). If you chose the DVD delivery method you will have the option to wait for the disc to install Logos 4 and your unlocked books (indexing still needs to happen though).
If your are purchasing new:
If you choose the DOWNLOAD delivery method the story is the same for upgrading. If you choose the DVD delivery method, however, you must activate the DVD that we send you (which means you are not given any download options up front). This allows you to purchase a Logos 4 base product on behalf of someone else.
Hope this helps.

There is a difference between "upgrades" and "new" purchases.
If you buy an upgrade, the server unlocks the upgrade contents to your account. It knows who you are and exactly what you are trying to do—upgrade. If you order the DVD version, as a courtesy to you in case you wanted to give the download a try in your excitement to get started, the download files will be right there on your web receipt and your order history tab. Remember, the licenses are controlled at the server, so it really doesn't matter how you get your locked book files.
When a new base package is purchased the server does not know what the final destination will be, so it doesn't unlock anything at all, unless you choose the download option. If you choose DVD as the delivery option we have no idea of where that DVD will ultimately be installed and to whom, so we include a serial number with that DVD and allow the customer to send it wherever they wish.
Many times a new package is purchased by one customer on behalf of another, as a gift, as a church buying for staff, as a parent buying for a student, as a mission agency buying for someone in a closed country, and so on and so forth.
If we unlocked/activated the DVD purchase to the account making the purchase we would not send a new serial number and then the church office would own a Scholar's Library Gold, for example, and the missionary would be trying to figure out what went wrong and how to install this thing.
If you want to have the best of both worlds on a brand new base package purchase, choose the download option so you will be instantly unlocked/activated/registered and add the Media Only DVD to your order:
Logos Bible Software 4 Media Only [DVD]

Yes, this helps. I have L3 and 10 gb of resources. I will eventually upgrade but wish to avoid the large download that killed my computer. So here is the next question:
If I upgrade to L4 via DVD, would the DVD that I receive be the same as the L4 Media DVD? or is it a different DVD?

Yes, the licenses are all taken care of here on our servers, or with serial numbers that are sent with product. The DVD (the actual physical piece of plastic) is exactly the same one you would get whether you purchased the Scholar's Library or the Media Only DVD.

That answered my question. Thanks.
