jtondee:

I speak from the minority, as I have the 16 gb version of the new iPad. I have managed even with a good number of apps not to put a dent in the 13.3 gb which are available. I qualify it by saying that I did not buy a iPad for movies or music strorage. It was bought primarily for preaching, on the go study using logos, and keeping up wit prayer request etc.

After using the iPad 2 16 gb for a year and never dropping to less than 7 gb I personally couldn't justify for myself the extra 100 dollars. If you have the money I would certainly recommend a larger size storage as bigger means less have to manage space.

Logos is the app with the biggest file size on my iPad and I have about 800 mb of books downloaded, as many books in my library are deemed non essential to quick on the go study.

It is possible with less storage to still make due, if you don't have the funds available. You must budget what's important to you. If movies and music are important to carry around, then you probably want bigger. Pictures And personal movies can be managed by buying he camera addition that has a sd card reader.

That being said I've never heard of anyone complaining about having too much space, and i have heard of many who wished they had more.

wow, I appreciate your input.  I don't really need it for music.  I still have a 160 GB classic ipod for that.  I thought I might make a movie every now and then, but I could transfer it once it is saved.  I thought I might download a movie or two on occasion.  That is normally about 2 GB each, right?  Would retina change that?  Hmmmm.

Also, again FWIW, I had been holding off buying an iPad since last summer because of the rumored Retina display for what was to be iPad 3. I do understand tight funds, but I think the Retina screen would keep me content longer with this tablet than with the lower resolution of the iPad 1 or 2. Then again, I'm really picky about such things. If you are not, count yourself blessed! Wink

i've been following your saga, going back several months . . .  Wink  now that I have the possibility of getting one, your leanings toward bigger and better are providing quite a quandary for me in my own decision (reference above in this post . . . ) Stick out tongue

thanks, all, for your input.

I suppose, i could go with the cheap 16 GB for now, and when finances change, resell it for a decent amount and just spring a little more for a little more power/display/space.

Hi Dan. I generally create more quandaries than I solve around here. Opportunity cost is ever with me, so I have to be really convinced to make a large purchase. My method generally pays off, but it's pretty aggravating in the meantime.

I think you may have hit upon a good solution, getting the 16GB now and then reselling and getting a larger one later as finances improve. And if not, you just have to manage the storage that you have. That may be inconvenient but not a huge problem. You'll still have a topnotch tablet and you will not have created an issue with finances.

Sagas--yes, mine and yours! I've been keeping an eye on your posts. Wink

Dan, hd movies can be quite large, with a 2 hr movie about 3-5 gb, you will find the rental option available, and the best option, I think it would be hard with a 16gb to have too many he movies reside permanently.  I think as Bill stated, you are on the right track, getting a smaller one which works with your finance, trying it out, and if you need bigger resell and get bigger.

When I got the iPad 2 last year it was my first step into the tablet market, so we went small to see if we would like it. Turns out we loved it, but I also learned what was a priority to me with all that was available app wise. I have my apps, my wife had hers, and my kids wanted any app that they could get heir hands on. We made it all work, having 4 people with many different app preferences, we just learned to manage and prioritize which apps are important and which we're not. Some don't want the hassle of deleting apps and managing space, which I can also understand.

As your Saga continues, good luck to you, whatever you get, I think you will find that it was worth the purchase

Forgive all the misspellings, sometimes going back and correcting them from the iPad is a pain. Lol

For those of you considering how much storage space you will need for movies on the iPad I offer my solution.  I use a program called Cucusoft to rip DVD's that I own to my computer in an iPad friendly (MP4) format.  I just checked two of the movies in my itunes library for comparison.  "The Blindside is 943mb while "Fireproof" is 682mb.  If you go this route you can budget around 1gb per movie and come out ok.

Not knowing exactly where to place this comment I slip it gently in here.

I finally got the Zagg case with the keyboard  from BestBuy because I didn't want to wait for Amazon's mail. The keyboard works well, the on/off magnet thing does not although the box says this thing is compatible with the new gen. IPad. I can do without that feature anyway and I intend to find another case when I grow some more money in the garden. I want a wrap around leather one, light and protective. The Zagg case is a little heavy with the Ipad in it.

I am hunting and pecking around with the Itunes sync. I haven't used ITunes a lot for some time and when I did a wi-fi sync I saw notices show up in the itunes folder of apps and books and I wondered if it copied apps like Logos and a Spanish Bible over to the ITunes on my computer. That would be a waste if it did. In any case, the pictures I wanted to copy did copy to the IPad and that was what I wanted to do.

Can someone, please, tell me if the wi-fi sync with ITunes places apps from the IPad onto the computer?? That would be awful if it does that.

Thanks, this is an interesting forum.

Blessings to all out there,

E.

Ergatee, did you go to settings and turn on the cover lock/unlock believe its found on the general settings, I can't remember if it is on or off by default. I have never messed with the iTunes wifi sync, so someone more experienced will have to fill you in on that. Hope I helps

Well, I need to address the issue about things being copied from the Ipad to the Itunes on the computer when enabling a sync.

It does copy what can be a large number of mb to the Music Library/Mobile applications on the C drive. I hate that.

Any suggestions regarding how to do a one way sync? I don't see why I would need to have these apps on my laptop computer. Is it for safety? I suppose so. Maybe I should leave them there? Because it is a sort of back up. Maybe using the ICloud is the better way to go? Of course, I know that it is 5gb and so limited, but I don't really buy movies from Itunes/Apple or music. I got enough things to do and spend most of my time on biblical subjects.

Thanks to any one with experience who can give some advice on this.

Regards to all in His Name,

Ergatees

Thanks for you kindness. I followed the current pdf on using the IPad and it sent me to general/

iPad Cover Lock / Unlock
You can automatically lock or unlock iPad 2 or later when you use it with the iPad Smart Cover (available separately). When this feature is turned on, iPad automatically locks and goes to sleep when you close the cover, and then wakes when you open it. This setting appears when you attach the iPad Smart Cover.

Since I didn't see a heading IPad Cover I ignored the rest. Copying this to you from page 125 must mean that I am to put it at unlock. Not sure but will try.

Wow! After writing the above, I just understood that you have to have the smart cover in place to have access to that setting. Since I have the Zagg cover, I may not get that possiblity.

Thanks!!

E.

Ergatees - I am a Mac snob, so you will have to forgive me. I don't really know how it works on the PC. The reason that it is syncing up is to create a backup… not just of the apps (which can be re-downloaded), but also of the info associated with those programs. Personally, I use iCloud. The 5GB is more generous than you think… Apps are not included in the 5GB (because they can be re-downloaded), nor is media purchased through iTunes (music, tv, movies). Actually, iTunes Music Match makes it even better… the rest of your collection gets matched up and can be downloaded at will. This includes music from other sources (such as CD's or Amazon). It's only $25 a year.

Hiya, Alabama24,

Very valuable info. I was a Mac user years ago on the little 128kb Mac. Remember that? lol So I am used to the hunt and peck method and when it doesn't work I begin to dive into the guides/manuals. So did that and all is well. Learned a few lessons in this fight.

Well, I erased all the extra mbs (apps, etc.)  from my computer (laptop) "c" drive. Gotta keep room for my precious i.e. the Logos 4. I saw that when I did the setup for syncing when the IPad is hooked up to the PC all the categories were checked and *everything* was getting backed up to the computer. So got into there somehow and unchecked most categories. I use the University thingy more than the other stuff.

Then I found that the books I had downloaded from the store were gone from the IBook on Ipad. So had to download them again. I think now I have this baby under control. No time to talk to anyone around the house; it's all IPad for the last 3 days!

I love Alabama. Even lived there for a time.

Take care,

E.

I was just scanning this thread, sorry if this has been answered and I missed it.

Is Logos going to be officially supporting the retina display in how they render text soon?  Does it already do that?  I think Logos is the last app I use regularly that I need to get confirmation that it will or has been upgraded to take advantage of that amazing resolution before I jump ship and buy one.

Thanks!

I don't have a 3 Gen iPad, so take my answer with salt. It is my understanding that normal apps will render typefaces at the higher res automatically. This seems to be the case based upon some other users comments. What will need to be updated is the UI, but the reading text should be good to go.

If you look around you'll find a post where a logos person said yes they would. It is not yet. Despite that fact text looks awesome.

Hi, jtondee

Yes, I tried the settings under general. Guess what. I went to BestBuy with my Ipad 3rd gen. today. I showed the fellow at the Apple stand my Ipad and he couldn't find the setting either. He went over to the Ipad 2 and checked it out. The setting was there but not available on my Ipad 3rd generation in spite of the manual telling us what to do.

So that ends that. Ha.

I don't have the Zagg case that Ergatees is talking about (though I considered it strongly, and I appreciate the feedback about it in this thread), but I got another case that is "compatible" with the new iPad. It says on the box that the cover lock feature works.

What I found in real life is that it's marginal. Whatever magnet pattern Apple uses must have changed slightly from gen 2 to 3, because it doesn't always work. I closed the cover and messed with it, and I would have to twist the cover just right to see the screen turn off, but any deviation from the exact spot caused the screen to pop back on. I think all of these cover manufacturers either assumed that it would be the same as the iPad 2 and were wrong, or they didn't test adequately (perhaps that extra 0.1" thickness is throwing the covers off), but I believe the non-Apple covers are not compatible with the 3rd generation iPads.

So I turned the feature off and I'm happy to simply turn it on or off by pressing the button.

For anyone looking for the settings, they're at: Settings -> General -> iPad Cover Lock / Unlock (On / Off)

I don't know whether this is OT based on the magnet discussions in this thread, however it does seem like there is some type of issue with new iPad magnets and the sleep/wake function as referred to this this article.

With all this talk of storage space on this thread I would like to point out that some apps that have been updated are taking as much as 5x the storage of their iPad 2 counterpart. This will increase as more and more apps are updated to take advantage of the retina display. I think the typical app is 2-3x the size. I took this into consideration and went with the 64GB New iPad.

My experience in the Apple Store yesterday was that the Apple smart cover worked with my iPad 3rd gen. But my new zagg cover with keyboard did not. I was also previously aware that there could be problems.

As I found out in the store, William, those settings are found only on the iPad 2, but not on the iPad 3. Am I wrong. The store clerk went and checked my ipad 3 and the ipad 2 and came back and said I was right.
