Is there a way to search for words that appear more than three in a single book of the Bible?

Is there a way to search for words that appear more than three in a single book of the Bible? I am interested in finding out which words and topics are emphasized in that book. For example the word free appears 7 times in Galatians.

Thanks

Jeff

    Hi, Jeff:

Welcome to the forums. Here are steps to a slightly more complicated word count than you are looking for, but I believe you will be able to simplify it to meet your needs. (If this attempt does not work, I will try a different method...)

After reading this post, i looked around in L4 and tried things mentioned here. i then was curious and decided to add macros inside of an Excel doc to do this. Here is what i came up with.

i discourage using original language words (although one simple test seemed to work).
Also i discourage pasting more than 1 chapter at a time into the cell, i don't know how many words can be safely fit into one cell.

Here is the Excel file (you will need to enable the macros!)

    4405.CountWords.zip (updated)
(the Excel file is zipped, the forum editor required it since it contains macros.)

How to use this Excel file with L4

    image

    1. Always set this to Bible Text Only because i don't try to parse out verse number or any other text.

    2. Select your favorite English Bible and enter your scripture range
(Don't use a range with too many words, i've tested it with around 800 words. i expect it can do a couple thousand words)

    3. Now press the Copy button to add your text to the clipboard.

    image

    4. Now paste your text into cell A3.

    5. Then press the Count words button.
      a. While the macro is counting words, you will see the current word count to let you know something is happening.
      b. After the macro finishes it updates these word counts (Total = total number of words in cell A3, Unique = unique words found)
      c. Your words are listed here along with the number of times they were found.

    Things to keep in mind

    • Similar words are treated as unique words. (e.g. run is different from ran)
    • You can select the range of words and use Excel's sorting tools.
    • hyphenated words may appear as 2 unique words.
    • words with an apostrophe may show s as a unique word.
    • All words are converted to lowercase when comparing them. Although the word shown in the list will reflect the case for the first instance of the word found.

Observation: the Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament has a count by Louw-Nida domain for every Greek lemma in the New Testament.

A morph search can find various grammatical usage.  Caveat: Morph Search Analysis is limited by Logos to 10,000 results so 57,245 results of Nouns and Verbs in the New Testament within one resource is currently beyond Logos 4 capabilities to count.

Logos 4.6 Beta 1 has a new feature: Word Lists, which can sort by count.

Note: using Logos 4.6 Beta 1 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, also learned that trying to save a morph search for @N in one open resource (NA27Int) as a Word List with 28,645 results causes Logos 4.6 Beta 1 to become unresponsive with 100 % CPU usage for many minutes.

For example the word free appears 7 times in Galatians.

Noticed three cognate words are translated as free/freedom in Galatians (Noun, Verb, and adJective):

Personally use a visual filter in lexicons to highlight Louw-Nida domain numbers.

    Keep Smiling [:)]

    Hi Steve,

When I tried to open the excel file, I got a message that Visual Basic macros do not work in Excel for Mac 2008.

Is there a work-around for this?

    Thanks!

MS disabled macros in Office 2008, but they restored them in MS Office 2011. Your only option would be an upgrade. [:(]
