Could somebody please tell me if it is possible to search within specific books within a series - in particular, the Ante-Nicene Fathers.

I am interested in finding occurrences of the words "Word (i.e., Logos)", and "Scripture(s)" in Origen's writings (which I believe are found in volumes 4 and 9 of the Ante-Nicene Fathers), in particular – though not exclusively – in Origen's Commentary on the Gospel of John.

With thanks (and apologies for my interminable ineptitude) . . .

Hi John

If I understand what you are trying to do correctly then I would create a Collection containing the Ante-Nicene volumes.

(Details on creating collections are at http://wiki.logos.com/Collections and I have created one using the string "title:Ante-nicene" as below:

When I search this collection for articles containing both "Word" near "Scripture" I get the results shown below:

(For details of search syntax, see http://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help and particularly http://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help#Proximity_Operators).

To ensure I only get hits when both of the search terms are capitalised I have set "Match Case" in the search window - for details of doing this see http://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help#Matching_Case_or_All_Word_Forms)

Hope this helps.

If it doesn't answer your question, please post back

Graham

Hi John - and welcome to the forums.

I tried to answer providing some links to more detailed information but was caught by the forum moderation software which is currently being "turned up".

In the meantime - you basically need to create a collection, An example I use is shown below

You then need to search this collection for something like "Word NEAR Scripture" as below

To ensure I only get hits with capitalised terms I have turned on "Match Case" in the search options

For details of creating collection and details of search terms please refer to the Logos wiki at http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Bible_Software_Wiki

Hope this helps

Hi Graham,

Thanks a lot for your helpful response. If I understand your advice correctly, I suspect I already know how to do what you've advised.

What I am particularly interested in doing is searching only the works of Origen within the series, and omitting an inclusion within the search, of all the other authors within the Ante-Nicene volumes in which Origen appears. I would like to not have to wade through the very many other authors who are included in the results, but to cut straight to my Origenistic chase. In short, I don't want to search the entirety of the particular volume, but only Origen's works which are included in the  volume.

Thanks again.

Hi John

Thanks for the clarification.

But I'm afraid that there isn't any mechanism (to the best of my knowledge) to do "partial book searches" for non-Biblical books.

If you're working intensely on one particular text it might be worth copying it into a .docx file and compiling it as a PB. If you're only using it for searching you wouldn't need any tags or milestones or anything, so it shouldn't take many minutes to do. If you're working really intensively on Origen, it might even be worth doing for all of his works.
