THIS MIGHT HELP YOU WITH SLOW PERFORMANCE... Can any one reproduce this?

Those of you with SLOW, poor performance in Logos 4 might want to experiment with this.

I'm working in Vista. I've found that when I turn off the "TABLET PC INPUT SERVICE" in the Services(local) that Logos4 (on this particular computer, at least), smoothed out and functioned perfectly. NO performance problems, no matter what I do in Logos4. Well there are a few things, like trying to drag floating windows is still jerky.

I went from almost unusable, eratic performance to truly excellent performance in an instant when I turn this service off. When I turn it back on Logos4 goes back to being eratic.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else can reproduce this or if it is just something peculiar to my set up. BTW I have "use internet" turned off.

Try it! Turn off "Tablet PC Input Service" :

START -> Control Panel ---> Administrative Tools -------> Services -----------> Scroll down to "Tablet PC Input Services" ---> Double click ----> Stop

This may be something unique to my set up. And it may be only temporary. But... thought I'd pass it along.

I noticed no real change after turning it off. Can you give some specific examples of things you did before/after in Logos 4 that changed with this?

I am on Windows 7 and this service appears to be set to manual. Could be a change in settings from Vista to Win 7 or could be based on settings selected during OS install.

Hi Bruce,

I did the same test myself, even though my Logos4 was functioning well, to see if its performance was enhanced. I found, however, that there was no discernable (at least to me) change in how Logos4 behaved.

Perhaps your fix works well if Logos4 is behaving poorly.

Thanks, though, for the tip, if it had worked, it would have been very nice. Perhaps when I upgrade to Windows 7, Logos4 will work better!

Thanks for the info. I tried it and it looks responsive, but it is hard to say. I haven't had too bad response of the program anyway. I will see after a longer try.

EDIT: I have VISTA and I did not have it on the manual, so I needed it to be switched off.

Unless you have a tablet or pointing device like that you will not have this on automatically. Mice do not count. You would need either a tabletpc or a wacom tablet device or one like it.

Tried it... It did help (not all that much) but I also closed down and disabled some other junk that was running (and auto starting) EX. Yahoo Updater

I am one of those who has a set up that is causing me to have problems with Logos4.

BEFORE, when I had "Word by Word" activated in my "Exegetical Guide" Logos slowed way down. Specifically the scroll bar in word by word was extremely unresponsive. At times Word by Word would just take so long and tie things up that I would have to close it. When I would try to click the "x" to close the Exegetical Guide it would take 5-10 seconds to respond to the click.

BEFORE, it would sometimes take 10-20 seconds to type in one word or a scriptural reference in a search box. The key strokes were taking that long to register.

BEFORE, when I tried to highlight a selection from a bible or reference, the selection would delay for 3-5 seconds and frequently the selection would be off.

BEFORE, there were times when logos would grind to a halt and I would have to shut it down with task manager.

BEFORE.... and here is one of the oddities: At times Logos4 would start up and behave. Smooth and responsive. When this happened it had a tendency to degrade with time. If I shut L4 down and restarted, usually 2-3 times I could get it to do well again. For awhile.

BEFORE, the CPU Usage had a distinct pattern of usage that paralleled the problematic behavior. When I asked L4 to do something (Word by Word, eg.), the CPU usage history would go to about 70% and stay there... with only minimal variation. When L4 was not the window in focus or if I had it minimized the CPU Usage History would start a distinctive saw tooth pattern from about 3% spiking to 55%. This pattern will continue indefinately or until I asked L4 to wake up and do something. Then back to 70%. I have screen shots of this if you are interested. BTW, L4 is not using too much CPU. It uses about as much as any other program. It's just this "pattern" seems to indicate that it is attempting to do something and gets in a loop or something. The pattern is indicitive of the the slow performance.

Also the memory usage is odd with Logos4. I use Adobe CS4 products. When in those programs I can easily push the memory usage into the 3 gb+ range (I am on a 32 bit system so that's all I can use). With L4, memory usage runs up to about 1.6 gb or 63% and stays there. L4 never asks for more memory.

These are examples (not inclusive) of the type of problems I was having before.

AFTER......, ALL of this went away. Every slider was smooth and immediate. Everything works. Selections are immediate. Typing is quick and responsive.

As far as searches, information pane, right click response, etc., I don't think there was much difference. BEFORE, even when the keyboard, mouse, navigation was so slow and unresponsive, the searches and all took about the same amount of time as AFTER. (I think) It was the interface that cleared up.

BEFORE Word by Word was especially prone to causing the problem. If I shut that down I got along much better. AFTER I can use Word by Word and it is fast.

Having said all that... I have to say that I have thought I had it figured out with a number of other "fixes," too. Only to find that the next time I rebooted or tried to start Logos4 I was back to the problem again. So.... stay tuned.

I know this may seem obvious, but be sure that you go to properties and set the function to manual or disabled. Otherwise it will reactivate at the next boot. I don't know if it has had an impact on performance for me (my performance has seemed okay), but I turned it off and set it to manual activiation.

Thanks you for this info. I did it and we will see how it does. My main problem is putting in Notes. When I right click to put in a note my laptop just looks at me then the screen goes blank and it says Logos 4 not responding- 15-20 sec. later the screen comes back for me to add the note. For each note I add it takes approx 35-45 sec. I'm hoping this addition of turning off the tablet will help.

Have you had any trouble adding notes. I don't have any trouble hovering over a notes item and opening it up jsut adding it.

I used the system upgrade from Windows Vista to Wondows 7 with this laptop. In the task mananger I went from 31 processes running to over 60 processes running with Windows 7 installed. Thanks Rosie for the webpage for narrowing down the process list. For those of us who like to listen to music while we work...wmp (windows media player) is a system hog and runs at 50% usage...I also noticed that the wmp network was also on and I disabled that (another huge system hog. Is there someone who can explain what the system idle actually does...I have noticed this takes alot of usage also and not sure what it pertains to...I have also tried without efect to delete this process...won't happen. Hope this helps someone...

System Idle process is just Windows way of saying "I"m not doing anything right now. In fact, let me tell you exactly how much I'm not doing."

Don't delete or disable, it doesn't really steal usage, it just shows what is not being used.

I see a lot of forum posts/threads about slow Logos/computer performance and what can be done to speed things up. The minimun and recommended systems as described at http://www.logos.com/support/techfaq#sysreqs may not be of much help to many people in evaluating their current systems or determining what component(s) is the weakest link.

A graphic and objective way to evaluate your current system is to install and run a small, free (and very popular) utility called PC Wizard. You can run benchmarks for your entire computer system and see the results displayed in comparison to other reference systems. For example, here is a benchmark run comparing a computer with an i7 processor (gold line) with what I believe would be roughly equivalent to the "Logos Recommended" system (blue line). Notice how you can compare each subsystem (processor, video, hard disk, memory) with the reference system. The slower the component, the closer it is to the center of the graph. And, if the component for your system falls inside of the blue line, you should consider some upgrading.

Bottom line: you can evaluate your system objectively as opposed to someone's subjective opinion or guess.

I'm running Windows 7 on Fusion 3.0.1. I was using a Wacom tablet as a pointing device (a carryover from my use of it in photo imaging software). I changed my settings from "Manual" to "Disabled" and disconnected my tablet. It appears that Logos 4 has "smoothed out" and more responsive in some areas. I was already generally pleased with Logos' overall performance on my W7 virtual machine as I wait for the Mac version to catch up - I do welcome what appears to be an even better Windows performance. I will spend more time using Logos with and without my tablet to see if this is this is real or imagined on my part! [:D]

I guess it was more imagined on my part when I first changed the settings - now I can't say one way is consistantly better than the other after experimenting with both for a few hours. Nevertheless, I am still pleased with the overall performance of L4...

Hi all,

I'm new to Logos 4, and find is so frustratingly slow.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a dell laptop

I've at dual core 2.66G, 6 GB Ram, 500 Gb HD, so would have expected it to run

I've tried the suggestions on this forum and also the Logos help, but is still frustratingly slow.

Just wondering if there were any other possible options to try.

How fast is your hard drive? It is my experience that anything slower than a 7200 RPM HD will result in an unsatisfactory performance. There are some suggestions here: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_Running_Slowly that you may or may not have tried yet.
