Thanks Josh.  (for others) I start with a book of the Bible always (commentaries are fillers if needed).

New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is the best Bible commentary you can get and it will always be useful. Geeked

You could also try the Analytical Bible Expositor (a more indepth alliterated "outline Bible") by John G. Butler.  He has few comments and great alliterated outlines for every chapter of the Bible.  New Testament is complete, the Old Testament is still a work in progress.  See sample below:

I was surprised at how good this commentary was when i actually used it. Even though it isn't long it comes to the point quickly and often is spot on from my perspective. I highly recommend it too.

I think this one fit well for the best one comparing to price, least expensive, and always useful

The Expositor's Bible Commentary (EBC) (12 vols.)

Otherwise, IHMO you have to stick with one volume

One Item not yet mentioned which i think should be considered is http://www.logos.com/product/8579/the-preachers-commentary it is same price as EBC and offers a lot, sermon outlines, illustrations, and solid commentary. It is not overly expository, but covers most information you might want to explore. Some of the illustrations can be dated but it is a very good value for the 35 volumes. It also feels to me to have a nice devotional quality about it usually.

Young baptist pastor, and seminarian here my self (academic discount is fantastic by the way!).

Just downloaded the EBC, and from what I've read  (on 1 kings 17) I like it so far. It also comes highly recommended by Danny Akin of SEBTS.

+1 on the Tyndale OT and NT series. I have lots and lots of commentary sets, but this one seems to have a really nice balance. Not too much, not too little.

I use EBC for most personal and class studies. It is where I always turn to first. But Preacher's is great for illustration purposes.

My cup runneth over...thanks everyone.  My Pastor says he rarely uses commentaries but I am playing catchup at 51 as a freshman in Divinity School so they help a lot.  God bless you all.  God be glorified....Jesus Lead On!
