Logos 5 will randomly begin utilizing a large percentage of the processor on my MBPr 13" and does not seem to quit unless I Force Quit Logos and then re-open it. This does not appear to be indexing on the part of Logos, because there is no indexing icon in the menu bar.

This is a problem because not only does it use a large percentage of my cpu, but will also increase the temperature dramatically (~95-100C) and drain the battery.

System Specs:

OS X v.10.8.3

Logos 5.0b SR-2 (5.0.2.0743)

Library Size = 4000-5000 (2759 shown)

Intel i7 Dual Core 2.9GHz (3.6GHz Turbo & 4MB Cache)

8GB RAM (DDR3 @ 1600MHz)

Intel 4000 Graphics (768MB Shared)

When you notice this are the sync arrows moving?

Hi Tommy, yes the sync arrows are active during the high cpu usage. I noticed your other thread after I posted mine. I'll see if I can provide you with what you need.

Often it seems to occur when Logos has been opened for a while and it will happen even when I am not actively using it (though it is opened in the background).

A similar problem was produced after I closed the laptop lid and then woke the computer back up. Only this time the sync arrows were not active and I was able to close Logos without force quitting.

We're currently having some trouble with Core Animation and the Sync arrows. Something is causing the animation of the arrows to use up large amounts of system resources. This occurs because we are basically checking the entire application for changes to animate, instead of the small arrows graphic, every time they spin around (about 30 times per second).

This has already been identified and will be resolved in version 5.1. For now, as a work around, you might want to use the application offline, then intentionally log in and sync it when you're done working. This will avoid the problem occurring 'at random' whenever we sync automatically.

Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Mike,

How does "intentionally log in and sync" after

using Logos off line ?

Thanks !

Workaround sounds like use application offline: use command key during program launch, then click work offline.  When ready for Logos to sync, quit application, then launch without using command key.  After sync completes, quit application.

Working offline can be a bit quicker, but lacks access to some items: e.g. reading list(s), passage guide .com sections

Here is another log. This one happened with the sync arrows moving and needed to be force quit.

Has there been any progress on fixing this problem?

Logos will need to chime in... I don't know if you are likely to get any response until after the holiday weekend. If not, go ahead and bump the thread later in the week.

Logos 5.1 release notes => http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_5.1 and Logos 5.1a release notes => http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_5.1a do not mention bug fix for Core Animation of Sync Arrows on Mac.

Logos 5.1a Release Candidate 3 (5.1.1.0593) is available => http://community.logos.com/forums/t/74497.aspx

While updating Logos Collections and ratings using Logos 5.1a RC 3 on OS X 10.8.4 and Windows 7 have experienced sync working quickly.

Caveat: several programs (e.g. Safari, Firefox) had virtual memory usage over 4 GB so recently rebooted OS X.

As an update to the problem, Logos 5.1a will still randomly utilize a large percentage of CPU (thereby increasing temperature significantly and decreasing battery life) and will not shut down properly without a force quit. I have not noticed the sync arrow animation during these.

This happened to me yesterday (the Logos process went to 500%) and just happened again today. I don't know about yesterday, but today it was locked in a sync cycle. I had to force quit Logos.

I used the Logos Logging Utility to get a sample and archive while Logos was still running, but the Utility froze up also and I had to force quit it. The log sizes are smaller than normal:

0310.SampleLogosLogs.levi.20130905-111317.zip

4786.LogosLogs.levi.20130905-111413.zip

After force-quitting Logos, I archived the logs again:

8741.LogosLogs.levi.20130905-111538.zip

I am on OS 10.8.4 with Logos 5.1a SR-1

I have this problem too. Not really sure if it helps to post in this forum or not; nor where to turn to if this is not the right place. Anyway, I noticed my CPU usage go up to 159% this morning, the fans kicked up, and battery started draining. So I Googled it and came here.

I have a 2013 13-inch MacBook Air, i7, 8 GB/256 GB and running OS 10.8.4.

Running Logos 5.1a SR-1.

I'm still experimenting to confirm (hard to confirm when system is totally locked up), but I may be experiencing the same issue on a PC.

See thread below for details.

Same problem here. My macbook air sounds like it's taking off. It's always when the arrows start spinning.

Wow, I set "use internet" to "No" in the preferences and 2 minutes into the experiment my cpu usage spiked again. There are no arrows spinning and no indexing happening.

It's pretty frustrating, as my computer slows to a crawl. Any advice on workarounds to make Logos usable again?

Did you restart? That change requires a restart.

Any advice

The only advice I have is to post sample&logs (see 'Mac Logs' in Alabama's signature above), so that they can figure out what's wrong and fix it.
