It's good that you are revolving theme of the homepage around John 1 for new believers.
However, would it be possible to place the verse of the day somewhere in the corner of the homepage? (If you don't mind using Jquery JavaScript then you could use a slide that pop outs showing the verse of the day when you hover your mouse over a tab or some kind of UI element.) This way you are being tactful.
Just a suggestion. Not trying to be pushy or anything.
