Bug: Catholic Topic Index doesn't work if Verbum set to 'No'

I have purchased Verbum, but use Logos in non-Verbum mode (Set Verbum to No). But unfortunately this means I lose access to the exciting new Verbum addition to the Guide (Catholic Topic Index). It's fair enough that this section doesn't appear by default when in non-Verbum mode, but it shouldn't be hidden altogether. This guide section should be tied to my licence, not what UI I currently have.

This is similar to the Logos 5 web-based sermons helps that are not available when Verbum is set to yes. Consistency doesn't mean optimal.

Are you saying you want web-based sermon helps in Verbum, or not? (Note for others: Verbum users also out on the three sermon sites [sermonaudio, sermoncentral and sermons.logos.com], Graceway Media, Lightstock, and topics.logos.com.)

Well since you asked what I really want is Text This Week, Lectionary Central ...Big Smile

A serious answer: to me Verbum appears to be becoming the best choice for Orthodox, High Lutherans, Anglo-Catholics ... and serious thought ought  be given to the needs of those groups. I honestly don't know what best meets their needs.

Is this new for Verbum plus? And do you think this is meant to stay (and not only the bug found by Lynden I think, but was fixed in the very latest SR)?

I have my L5 run in Verbum mode all the time, but use reading lists quite often, whereas I don't really care for the sermon sites.

That wasn't a reference to reading lists, but to a topics.logos.com section in the topic guide on non-Verbum installations.

We'll review these things. Some are, I think, just bugs or oversights.

In general, we don't want to make decision between the two platforms difficult. In general, features we develop should be available, even if off by default. We're going to be developing user preferences that will allow users to fine tune what's available according to their interests. (The first application, which should be coming soon, will be for the purpose of making Bible Facts for the deuterocanon available in Logos.)

Glad to hear this is on its way.

Just to clarify, what's forthcoming is the UI for making this visible in (non-Verbum) Logos. Bible Facts for the deuterocanon are already available in Verbum/Verbum mode.

Logos is cracking me up.  If you lived at Qumran, you should use Verbum. Jerusalem?  That'd be Logos.  Apostle Paul?  Verbum. Peter? Clearly Logos. Barnabas?  Hmmm  ... Logos?  Verbum?  Logos?  Verbum?

And Mark thought I was being 'daft' this morning (I had to look that up ... I thought it was something to do with Daffy Duck).

Tobit would use Verbum.

That's important, so thanks. There needs to be a both/and option, not just an either/or. That way, you'll get much more cross-selling.

Hi Louis,

Here is my two cents.  I do not believe there should be two different platforms.  It simply be (IMHO), if you have this or that resource, you should be able to use this or that tool.

The only difference between Logos 5 and Verbum should be the skin of the application and some default settings.  Heck, you should also make different skins for the program for different denominations.

While one group of tools will be used more by one group than another, this does not imply that people outside of the said group will not use the tool.

For an example, I work very closely with many of my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters.  While I am not RC, I would like to have information on the saints and their feast days so that I could celebrate with them.

Mark, not sure if you've figured it out yet, but since the CTI is a concordance type resource, it still opens up down in the right side with the other dictionaries/encyclopedias, when you enter a topic into the topic search box, does it not? At least it does so on my version when I set Verbum to no.

Note that for the CTI to show up again as a topic guide after you set Verbum to yes, you'd have to restart the program.

If we spend money developing features, databases or resources, it's in our interest to get them into the hands of as many paying customers as possible. That means not just tailoring the platform for the average user within a particular category, but also allowing power users with broad interests to exploit everything we've developed. We know it's not realistic to expect users to install both platforms, so this just forces us to be more deliberate about that. The forthcoming user preferences I mentioned above are part of that.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your input. Hopefully what already I've said has reassured you that we're not planning on abandoning people with ecumenical interests or who don't fit so neatly into categories.

We're well aware that tools that we develop with a specific market in mind might have broader application. For instance, while the improvements to the lectionaries were driven by Verbum, we applied them across the board. Likewise, the Saints homepage feature works just as you would expect. If you purchase the resource, it's available to you as an option in Logos.

This should be fixed in 5.2a Beta 1. "For users with the Catholic Topical Index resource unlocked, the “Catholic Topical Index” section of Guides will now be available to add, but not included by default."
