I picked up a 2012 Sony Vaio at a closing outlet center for 40% off.  Model SVS13A2APXS

Core i7-3520, 12GB Ram.  500GB drive. 10 hr battery with shelf battery I have.

Its a 13", but nice screen...nice for sitting on the couch or travelling.

The remarkable thing (I think) is its drive speed.   What do you think of this (for a 13" laptop, not a super desktop rig.)

Thanks

Very good. My 3 yr old first-generation i5 laptop took about the same time for 1100 resources on an SSD.

The value of a SSD drive:

I might add Library Results:

for HP Computer        47,445,618 results in 1,632,645 articles in 3,730 resources (32.72 sec.)

result for Sony Duo    47,037,363 results in 1,625,831 articles in 3,724 resources (22.69 sec.)

(I don't know why the difference in totals)

I did this from a blank layout. I don't see a My Books result - do I need to create a My Books collection first? Also, why is My Content so much smaller in results?

Presumably, this is because you haven't created any personal books. Wink

You've got 15 documents (Notes, Clippings, VF, Word List) with results but you can easily increase the "the" countBig Smile.

I assume that's a decent speed for my PC.

A time of zero (My Content) is good!  I get 524 in 20 docs in 0.05s - which shows the value of indexing your documents (they are indexed in the background in a matter of seconds).

Yeah, I couldn't believe how quickly the indexing of my resources took place compared to my old PC. In fact, on the old PC, whenever indexing was occurring I was barely able to do other tasks; Internet pages slowed to a crawl.

Faster than my Surface Pro 2 tablet, which found 60,150,272 hits of the word "the" in 5,137 resources in 27.91 sec.  However, there are other advantages to the Surface Pro tablet that make that quite good enough.  What is 10 or 15 seconds among friends?

First time I got 67 seconds, cleared the search box and got 36 seconds.

The Ssd, seems to be slowing down, but my Ram is also low. Unfortunately the Motherboard is also maxed out.

A full reindex will probably give better results.

It might be significant if you had hidden a few hundred books and this was the first re-index after that. Otherwise there is no redundant data in a resource index. On a HDD indexing will increase fragmentation and defragging should follow, but you do not defrag an SSD. The manufacturer's Toolbox should have a function to Optimize your SSD on a regular basis and this will increase its life and prevent any dramatic speed degradation. How long have you had it? If dramatically slow, your only option is to backup the SSD, perform a Secure Erase and restore its data.
