Impolite words in Word Find

I was doing a word find for fun this evening and much to my surprise several impolite words relating to bodily functions were present. I was slightly amused. Perhaps Logos might want to add a dictionary of words that shouldn't be produced when making word finds... at the very least teacher, double check them before you hand them out to a class!

I think you misunderstood me (or I'm missing your levity). I was talking about the word find puzzle generator, not any of the search functions.

Probably a little bit of both. But I thought the word find puzzle, took their words from the content of the resource and that was what you meant. But I assume you are saying that these were just random combinations that happened to return impolite words. Correct? BTW, I pulled up the search listing and the auto complete does have slang words listed that are commonly used to refer to scatological functions. So, I assumed that was what was causing what you saw.

BTW, I have a hard enough time finding the words I am looking for [:D]

I'm sure they were. There are plenty of rude words in Scripture, especially so depending on what version you're reading. KJV refers to men as those "that pisseth against the wall" in several places in 1 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings. Rosie, you are a fount of knowledge, I never would found this, as all the modern translations (including NKJV) censor this.

Yep, I got back last night. Glad to be back to Logos and download 4.0a and now I guess I'm downloading SR-1 or 2. Plus, I finally took the plunge with some of my 2009 savings and upgraded to Portfolio!! And while I was at it, I threw in the ICC (all 53 volumes) and Yale Anchor Bible (84 vols), both of which have been on my personal wishlist for months. Got the best deal possible on the whole lot by calling customer service directly. Oh boy! No more excuses for not getting down to work and really using Logos to its full capacity. There is nothing left in my "books to lust after" list (except pre-pubs, but those I'm waiting patiently for, as I have no choice).

Personally, I don't care all that much.... but if I were to pass such a thing out in my adult SS class some of the seniors in there might not take to kindly to "poop" being in their word find.

No, but if you passed it out to a group of junior high schoolers, they'd get a really good giggle out of it.[;)]

BTW, other euphemisms that are present in most English Bibles are "feet" or "stones" meaning male private parts. Other rude words in the Bible include whore, foreskins, etc. The Hebrew language is quite earthy. Read Frederick Buechner's The Son of Laughter (a retelling of the Jacob narrative) to get a feel in our English idiom for what it must have sounded like to original listeners. That book was recommended by none other than Eugene Peterson, the king of biblical street language.

Looking up some of this stuff just now I realized again how powerful Logos's new Bible Word Study feature is -- too bad I had to be using it to look up rude words; but speaking of euphemisms (I was searching for stones NEAR euphemism), you'd be amazed at some of the footnotes in the NET Bible, e.g. on Song of Solomon 5:4.

Rosie brought back some memories with the definition of the male in the KJV. I still have that version on my bookshelf. My mom made me and my brother and sister read aloud from that edition when we were children. Every time we came across that phrase we siblings would have a giggling fit... heh. Mom would patiently wait and we'd pick up from where we had left off.

I don't want to give the junior highers more of a giggle than they're already going to get from what's in there, & I certainly don't want my "evangelistic" efforts on behalf of Logos to be hampered by a negative impression. Suspicious minds would immediately flash to a conspiracy... ala reports of objectionable cartoon cels being inserted into Disney animated movies...

Reminds me of the time when my Dad (who was not particularly biblically literate but thought it was good for training in morals) punished my brother for something (nobody remembers the offense anymore) by having him read one chapter of Proverbs and write a short paper on it. He randomly chose Proverbs 7 to have my brother read, without having the slightest idea what was in it. It turned out to be one of the chapters (Prov 5, 6 or 7?) warning about the "wayward woman." My poor brother was about age 9 at the time and had no idea what adultery or a "harlot" was (can't remember if it was KJV or NIV he was reading), nor did that have anything to do with what he was being punished for. It was a lesson he surely never forgot, but not for the reasons my Dad hoped (I think he'd just noticed the bits about "keep your father’s command, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching"). We all can laugh about it now. [:)]

Yes, I agree, that should be done. I still smile, though, as I wonder who in the development team has to think up the word list that Logos should avoid putting in word find puzzles? :-) ("Dad, what did you do at work today?" "I made up a list of naughty words to code into the program." "Oh boy, can I work for Logos, too?" [:)])

Yeah, reminds me of the time when lots of people thought Microsoft was hiding anti-Semitic messages in Windows because if you put "NYC" (a city with a large Jewish population) in Wingdings font, it spelled "Death to Jews. Yeah!" (skull & crossbones, Star of David, "thumbs up" symbol). And the time when someone called up complaining about the so-called satanic messages hidden in the executable file of Microsoft Multiplan or some such early Mac program (it was an anagram of the names of the three programmers who worked on it, Bob, Bill, & Steve; "Bostb be evill"; the caller thought it was something devilish; I knew one of those programmers and that was the farthest from their thoughts; they were just being silly).

Yeah, and there's a Bible Code that if you know how to decipher it just right spells out all the disasters that are going to happen in modern society, just like in Nostradamus... um, remember that NYC? Well, I've got a bridge to sell you there.

Yep... what a job... Like I said, I don't think it's 1st on the to-do list for developers, but I do feel it should be there. I'm not saying Logos is responsible for what others might feel is offensive. That's too big a list. However, I do think Logos IS responsible to make a reasonable effort to avoid offending people & for having a process for incorporating feedback. As Kevin's experience shows, as of yet there's no effort to avoid offense & no process for avoiding recurrent offense.

I'm just sayin'...

Bill, I agree.

But at the end of the day most word finds will not contain any offensive or rude words in the random combination of letters. So once all our missing features are back and if a developer has a few days in between projects... sure try to whip up a solution to keep such words out of a word find.
