5.2b Beta 1 (5.2.2.0022) is available for download.

To update to 5.2b Beta 1, enter the Update Now command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before. If you currently have a stable version installed (such as 5.2a SR-4) and do not want to receive future beta updates, install from the download links on this thread. If you want to receive future beta updates, enter the Set Update Channel to Beta command to download Beta 1.

Release Notes

Note: One major change we're making is replacing Awesomium (an embedded web browser) with CEF (the Chromium Embedded Framework, an open-source alternative). This should improve stability (Awesomium is implicated in a large number of crashes we can't reproduce) and maintainability (since it's open source, we can fix problems ourselves, rather than waiting for a vendor to release an update).

The transition from Awesomium to CEF is a significant change, so please give extra attention to:

  • Bible Sense Lexicon
  • Community Notes
  • Group Reading Plans
  • Unowned resources page

Also, we expect 5.2b to have a relatively short release cycle. For this reason, we request that those interested in testing the Beta do so early on, rather than waiting for later Beta releases. We want to get as many eyes on this as quickly as possible. [:)]

5.2b will supersede 5.2a as our maintenance version (https://www.logos.com/support/free-support) so it will run on Vista and OS X 10.6.

Wasn't planning to, but because you asked so nicely. [:)]

While we do appreciate having beta testers look at this early (as Dylan said), I want to reiterate our standard warnings that the beta should only be installed on a dedicated testing machine.

Changing from Awesomium to CEF is not a major change in terms of the UI and functionality, but is a substantial change under the hood. This code is still very new and could crash if you use the Bible Sense Lexicon, Community Notes, or Faithlife group functionality. If you want to poke at it to find bugs, that's great! We'd be very happy to have the feedback. But if you depend on those features daily, this beta may not be for you.

Additionally, for Mac users, we've upgraded to Mono 3.4 to improve stability and performance. Unfortunately, this release seems to have a new bug in HTTPS connections which may affect login and sync. It's not a frequent crash, but if it happens to you, you may need to work offline to work around it.

The bugs for me are a complete crash upon load.  Logos starts then just crashes and goes away.  No idea what I have up that is doing it or how to get my numerous windows on my default start turned off

Sort of a bummer because Thursday is sermon writing day and my resources just went away.  :(

Any wisdom on how to downgrade to a stable version or solve the problem is appreciated.

Hold CTRL when loading Logos, then choose "Load Blank Layout" from the resulting menu.

At first I was planning to "high-five" you through the screen but your solution didn't work.

Then it occurred to me the CTRL key sounded like the PC option and I am Mac.  I used the COMMAND key and that gave me the option for the blank layout.

I am up and running!  Back to sermon prep.

    Total HIGH-FIVE through the screen!

Don't know if it's just anecdotal, accidental, temporary, or what, but 5.2b1 seems to use a lot less RAM than the previous release version. I'll keep an eye on it, but so far so good.

As you seem to be operating successfully now, I will just add a couple of points.

    1. After several crashes, I set use internet to No. So far, no new crash.

    2. In the past, I was able to revert to the stable version via Time Machine. The extensiveness of replacement would depend upon the nature of the update (hope that sentence made sense).
