We just launched a new service for sharing short Bible URLs on Twitter and other places where every character counts. The new site is called ref.ly.

It will generate shortened URLs, but since it uses normal Bible references, you can create them yourself without having to visit the site every time. And the good news is that it recognizes every conceivable Bible referencing scheme, so you can share Matthew 16:18 as http://ref.ly/Mt16.18, http://ref.ly/Mat16.18, http://ref.ly/Matt16.18, or http://ref.ly/Matthew16.18. The benefit to this is that you can just create your own URLs without having to remember which referencing scheme we support.

You can share a single verse (http://ref.ly/Ro8.28), a range of verses, (http://ref.ly/Jn1.1-18), a chapter (http://ref.ly/Ps23), or a book (http://ref.ly/Jd), and you can even specify a particular version by simply adding @ followed by the version abbreviation (http://ref.ly/1P2.2@ESV).

We hope you find ref.ly useful, and we welcome your feedback.

This isn't necessarily ref.ly specific, but I noticed when using it:

The highlight bar on bible.logos.com which indicates the verse range could be more noticeable.  I didn't see it until recently and was going to complain that there wasn't anything to indicate the extent of the reference.  Good thing I finally saw it.

I've noticed that the references are all defaulting to verse one instead of the verse entered.  For example, if I enter http://ref.ly/Mic6.8 and send, the link will take you to Micah 6:1 instead of v. 8.  Am I doing something wrong or is it on your end?

UPDATE: Just did it from my PC using Firefox and worked fine.  But on my ipod touch in Safari it doesn't.

I am trying to find out if there is, or if there is a plan to allow the ref.ly reference to be exported directly from Logos Bible Software 4.  Often I will be reading and find a verse I'd love to post on Twitter or Facebook but find that I have to copy the reference, go to ref.ly and get the ref.ly link there.  It would be great for me if this were a feature offered right in the menu from LBS 4.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, I hope I'm just missing it!

Thank you,

Dave Bosshard

Dave:

Except for a few special cases, most of the time you should be able to construct the ref.ly URL by hand. It's simply:

http://ref.ly/<bookabbrev><chapter>.<verse>

with obvious variations for ranges, etc. So for Mark 4:1-9, you can use http://ref.ly/Mark4.1-9. The ref.ly syntax is pretty forgiving, so you shouldn't go wrong very often with this approach.

(The special cases mostly have to do with brief, confusable book abbreviations: Jd could be Jude or Judges, Ph could be Philippians or Philemon, etc. If you lengthen the book name, you're more likely to hit the right one.)

Will this ever be fixed?

Works for Safari (4.04) on my Mac as well, but not from my iPhone.

I am having problems when I try to do just two verses. Example: http://ref.ly/ex20.3-4

It will post v3, but not vs 4. If i do 20.3-5, it works as expected. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!
